Does this also restrict player movement in the trade period?
Effectively yes, it seems so. The AFL was hoping to restrict movement a bit anyway, there was about 4x as many player movements in AFLW as AFL and for the established clubs that means they’ve lost their favourite players every year or two for the last 5-6 years in some cases. AFLW Media Release – Date set for AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft

The AFL is pleased to confirm that the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft will be held on Tuesday 4 April.

The ‘AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft’ will be a one-off event in lieu of the customary AFLW Draft, allowing an age reset before this year’s NAB AFLW Competition.

This follows the completion of two AFLW seasons in the 2022 calendar year, whereby the AFL has now re-aligned the AFLW Draft eligibility to be consistent with the first six seasons of the AFLW competition.

Players will complete their talent pathway activity in their 18th year (State League, National Championships, National Academy, and Draft Combine).

Clubs will not be required to add players to their lists at the draft. It is their final chance to ‘supplement’ their list ahead of the upcoming season.

The order of the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft will be determined on Friday 24 March following the conclusion of the PSP and the Sign and Trade Period.

On Friday, the AFL announced that players will be permitted to nominate for a ‘national pool’ for the first time, allowing draftees to be considered by all 18 clubs in the NAB AFLW Competition.

Key dates for the AFLW player movement period:

Sign & Trade Periods
  • Priority Signing Period: Wednesday 1 March at 9am – Wednesday 8 March at 2pm

Other list management dates
  • Final date for players on a two-year contract to accept or decline their 2023 offer (for those on a 2022/2023 contract): Friday 17 March at 5pm
  • Final date for clubs to offer a contract to their existing players: Monday 20 March at 11am
  • Final date to make a player inactive before the draft: Thursday 30 March by 5pm

We got one on the hook 😁 Brooke Brown is a rebound defender, which is one of the areas we needed to fill after delisting a couple late last year.

We’re allowed two PSP signings so that’s one done and one to go.

We still have gaps for one mid and one defender on the list too, assuming we go for the same positional split and no one has moved, although the max list is 30 so if we’re picking up any more we’ll need to delist more as well. We have until 20/3 to offer contracts to existing players.

I think I saw a rumour we were targeting a ruck as well, which could mean one of Borg and Ryan are on the move.

Jorja Borg was our no. 1 ruck last year, poached from Carlton VFLW, and then missed the whole season with a late injury right before round 1.

From what I’ve seen on Instagram she’s now back in training, along with Eloise Ashley-Cooper and Georgia Nanscawen and the whole VFLW squad, so doesn’t look like she’s going anywhere?

And Megan Ryan was the injury replacement ruck for Jorja Borg, but given we delisted others last year instead of her and Lily-Rose Williamson, it looks like we prefer to retain the injury cover rather than those who were injured.

Ryan was signing stuff at family day in an Essendon polo and she’s great craic (if you haven’t seen the Roaming Ryan videos, go do that) so I really hope she’s staying, but this AFLW caper can be ruthless with short seasons, small pay packets and short lists so will keep my fingers crossed 🤞

And of course there’s Steph Wales who we drafted last year, but surely draftees don’t leave after one season 🤔🤔 certainly I don’t think the club would initiate it.

We'll only have one pick on this supplementary draft, pick 45
Looks exactly the same as the AFLW draft order I've been updating as each trade goes through, except it only goes to the end of round 3 🤔

Doesn't look like they've accounted for the number of available list spots yet

Yeah, probably a 4th round pick as well, unless they know we're going to pick up a delisted free agent and we were waiting for the okay to announce?

Club has just announced 25 players re-signed for the 2023 season.

AFLW has a maximum list of 30 players, with capacity to move players to the inactive list and replace them during the season for injury, work, pregnancy, etc reasons. So we added Alex Morcom, Megan Ryan, and Lily-Rose Williamson to replace Eloise Ashley-Cooper (foot), Jorja Borg (foot) and Georgia Nanscawen (ACL). That took us up to 33 players.

Ryan, Williamson, Ashley-Cooper and Borg were all delisted, along with Jordan Zanchetta, Fede Frew, Bella Ayre, Olivia Barton and Caitlin Sargent. Down to 25 players, all of whom re-signed.

We then picked up five new additions in Kodi Jacques, Brooke Brown, Brooke Walker, Leah Cutting and Georgia Clarke, which takes us back up to a full list of 30.

All that meaning our list is finalised for 2023 and we won't be taking any picks in the supplementary draft on Tuesday. :smilev1:
