But Caro told me she was leaving? 🤷‍♂️
Isn't it great when Caro makes a statement last night like "Erin will go to PA and she will take Hatchard with her" only to find out today (the very next day) that Hatchard is sticking with the Crows. Was so pleased to see this. Its great news in many ways for the club. It tells me that the culture within the women's side is very strong. Love it.

If we could keep our stars and win the first flag of the 18 team era, that would be massive
Yes absolutely. I just know that the Victorian media will suggest that the premierships won during the first six years shouldn't be recognised because there were only a few teams involved.

Of course if a Melbourne team wins next year they'll call it the first "proper one" if interstate wins it'll be how the Melbourne clubs talent is spread too thin and how unfair it is that Melbourne clubs got their players poached

Any chance Ponter goes?
Are any players on multi year deals?

There's always a chance, yes. Although she has more connection to Essendon than Port. They interviewed her after the grand final and she seemed to genuinely love being at the Crows, but I guess anyone would be happy after having just been the lead goalscorer in a winning grand final.

Some players are on two-year deals, but those don't mean anything in terms of expansion signings (other than the player has previously shown a desire to stay at the club).

They have already referred to the last six years as the "first era" of AFLW, and have indicated that a new, complete, proper era is about to begin.

Mind you, they have also declared that this was the Crows' "last hurrah" and that 2022 would be the end of our dominance. I mean, that may prove to be the case (we were rubbish in 2018 and 2020 after our last two flags, after all) but declaring it now feels like jumping the gun.

I can see an argument that a flag in 2017 and 2018 is less impressive, with only eight teams in the comp and no finals series besides the grand final itself. But winning a flag in a league with 14 teams is pretty bloody impressive. It's not that along ago there were only 16 teams in the AFL.

Funny how they will happily downplay the 'first era', but then gleefully claim 16 VFL premierships as though they actually matter.

Anne Hatchard going NOWHERE. Commits to the Crows

Great news but still have some trepidation, Port will now make the offer they had to Hatchard to Jones, you’d also imagine that’s just the first time Port will try to sign her, I can imagine over the first few years they’re just going to keep on trying to poach the Crows stars over and over despite the numerous rejections.

Of course, but the longer we can hold out, the longer we can stay strong, and hopefully there will be more talent in the system to replace who we lose

Anne Hatchard going NOWHERE. Commits to the Crows

This is the best news! Was so happy seeing this today.

Anyone know if she's still playing basketball? Would hate to risk injury in the off-season.

Hard to say. This article (from 9 days ago) makes it sound like she might not be able to if the season starts early as planned.

The Crows trio will need to wait for the AFL to announce when the next season of the AFLW competition will start before being able to commit to playing out the full local basketball competition.

If the seventh season of the AFLW starts in August, as widely tipped, it could limit how much basketball they can play.

Hatchard explains: “It will just depend on when the season for next year starts … I was planning on playing basketball in the off-season but I’ve just got to get my body right and if there is an opportunity to play some basketball with those two girls, it would just be awesome.”

Stay and continue to win, continue to make history and a name for yourself while continuing your existing part time job

Or leave and lose most weeks for years, and still need part time employment

Like with other expansion sides this becomes a real issue. The athletes aren't full time. As a part time job, wouldn't you want to at least enjoy it?
The offers she has rejected are considerably more lucrative than what you're giving credit for. It would've been a very difficult decision.

What’s the salary cap?
$538,107 was this year's salary cap with two players being allowed to be paid outside the cap and the rest falling into the 4 payment tiers:
  1. Tier one: $37,155
  2. Tier two: $28,697
  3. Tier three: $24,468
  4. Tier four: $20,239
Plus an extra $100,000 to be shared amongst players that are involved in promotions.

It's obviously gone up for next year with new base minimums (heard it was set to double), but don't think those exact details have been released.

Are you sure on that salary cap? I know the standard model is two tier 1 players, six tier 2 players, six tier 3 players and 16 tier 4 players. That adds up to $717,124 on the figures you've quoted there (which I believe are correct).

Players also get a slight bonus if they play finals. Getting knocked out in a qualifying final is worth an extra $567 per player. Knocked out in the prelim is worth $1133. Runner up is worth $1983, and winning the premiership is worth $2833.

As I understand it, you are allowed to have more or less players at each tier level if you want, as long as you don't exceed the salary cap. For example, you could have an extra tier 1 player, if you're willing to replace a tier 2 spot with a tier 4 spot.

The tiers are exact payments (outside of bonuses) right? Not maximum payments for each tier.

What’s the max on the payment of the 2 players outside cap?

They are exact payments, yes. I'm pretty sure even the two players fall into those tiers as well and count towards the cap. It's just that those two can be paid extra beyond their tier paymenrs with the difference being outside the cap. As far as I know there is no maximum amount for that extra payment.

So apparently Caro said Hatchy was leaving to go for Port. That was her mail anyway.
Suck shit Caro!

Sent from my MI PAD 4 using Tapatalk

Caro just guessed. Port presumably made a big offer, so Caro assumed Hatchard would take it and just reported it as though she had any actual info on it. Or else she had a "source" who was also just guessing. Just like people have guessed on what Phillips will do all year long, but nobody has any actual mail. It's just straight up speculation reported as though it has some substance behind it.

In lieu of actual knowledge, apparently it's fine to just make an educated guess and preface it as "it is widely expected that" and that's journalism apparently.

At least Sarah Black usually goes out of her way to say that she is only speculating when she writes entire articles about complete guesses. Caro doesn't see the need to do so, it seems.
