Strategy AFLW List Management

Fresh from nailing the AFL draft and then toweling everyone in the time trial pre-Christmas, Mitch Cashion takes the reigns of our AFLW list.

What’s the likely approach in the transition to AFLW? Are we likely to trade in players from current aflw clubs plus retain some of the vflw list?

What’s the likely approach in the transition to AFLW? Are we likely to trade in players from current aflw clubs plus retain some of the vflw list?

THE FOUR expansion clubs will be able to sign up to 14 current AFLW players in a special 'expansion signing period', in proposed rules released by the AFL on Monday.

Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney will join the NAB AFLW competition ahead of the 2022-23 season, rounding out all 18 clubs.

The AFL hasn’t yet confirmed rules around the number of players per existing club who can move to new clubs.

Last expansion round, Brisbane and Fremantle could lose up to eight players, given Gold Coast and West Coast were entering the competition, with other teams losing up to four.

The new clubs can also acquire players through the following methods:

  • Open-age signings: players who have previously nominated for the NAB AFLW Draft and aren’t on a list
  • Under-18 talent from their NGA region. There will be a limit on this category, which is yet to be determined
  • Sign and trade period: following the expansion signing period. Expansion clubs cannot on-trade players they have signed through other mechanisms
  • NAB AFLW Draft
The expansion clubs will receive the first eight picks of the state-based draft, with the order to be determined at random.

They will then receive remaining picks at the end of each round, following the existing 14 clubs.

A number of Essendon and Hawthorn VFLW players nominated for the 2021 draft, making them eligible for signing as an open-age player.

Bombers VFLW skipper and competition best and fairest Georgia Nanscawen opted not to nominate for the 2021 draft, but should be eligible as an open-age signing as she has previously gone through the drafting process.

The AFL has said final list build rules will be determined in 2022.

We should be able to sign any of the VFLW players who nominated in 2021 or before, sign some existing AFLW players from other clubs, plus two picks in the first 8 and a bunch of later picks.

Ash Browne mentioned recently that there’s a few AFLW players who will be keen to play under Goddard again and those who started with our VFL women’s team who will want to get back to the HFC.

I’m not sure how true that is, but I love listening to Bec, so hopefully he’s onto something.

Makur Chuot, 29, had been one of the Tigers’ foundation players when they joined the league in 2020, playing 17 matches across three seasons at Punt Road. She played six games for Fremantle in 2017, the first year of the top women’s competition, before being delisted by the Dockers.

However, AFLW sources indicated that the 178-centimetre defender will likely join the Hawks’ inaugural AFLW list, having been pursued by the Hawthorn recruitment team, including coach Bec Goddard.

What is the hold up on signing more players? Only mention I can find on the website is a joke of sorts in an advertisement.

It's in a different article to the one linked there.
All-Australian and cross-code star Jess Duffin is in the frame to join her third AFLW club over the coming weeks. Duffin, who turns 33 next month, has interest from Hawthorn and could depart North Melbourne to join the expansion Hawks.
While Hawthorn have kept a low profile by contrast to Essendon and Port Adelaide, the Hawks have been working hard in the background to build a squad, and are likely to secure Richmond defender Akec Makur Chuot. Hawthorn have thus far not announced any player moves from rival AFLW clubs, only naming state league players Dominique Carbone, Bridget Deed, Zoe Barbakos and Sophie Locke as confirmed signings.

Daisy Bateman was also mentioned in the article as a potential player on the move, again (first reported about a month ago). Yet to be linked to any specific new club, the same for which can be said of Greta Bodey and Ebony+Kara Antonio.

Given that the season starts late August and pre-season 13 June, it's going to be a HUGE challenge for our AFLW team and coaching staff. I'm glad we've got Bec in charge but that tight timeframe is pretty amazing with 60% of the squad still to be filled.
