You'd think the AFL would want to have competent umpires because it is one area they can control competence, even if the players are still developing the umpiring should be as good as the men's league.
I really don't get why there isn't an elite path for umpires for the women's league. It's quite average at AFLW (I'd say equivalent of SANFL Reserves level), it's just plain substandard at SANFLW level. I'd go as far as to say if SANFLW umpires (who are very low level amateur umpires) were umpiring men's matches, they'd trigger a melee they have that little control over the game (and perhaps this is why you have the violence issues in the amateur competitions).
Funnily enough one of the most diabolical pieces of umpiring I saw in the SANFLW Friday was from a goal umpire. The Eagles had a shot at goal that's dribbled towards the line, and the goal umpire has stood behind the goal post (and nearly in the field of play), blocking his view of the goal line. The goal umpire had absolutely no vision of whether the shot was touched or not because he was completely out of position, and was forced to pay it a rushed behind.
