What I like best about this game is..................

A few short years ago women's AFL was never going to amount much, just a token 'rights' issue but now it's a legitimate game that we look forward to, marvel at their skills and physicality, and just bloody well enjoy.

Ex players like Merrett and Staker are coaching women not as a precursor to coaching men, but because they like working with women and being around strong women.

I have three daughters and I like the way the world has shifted in the last few decades.

These AFL women are role models not just for AFL players, but all girls who want to get out there and do stuff rather than spend hours primping and preening for photos they can post on social media.

What a cracker of a game. What a cracker of a competition.

Sure, the kicks were shorter and there were a few more spilled marks than the equivalent in the men's, but if you compare it to the amateur leagues (given all these girls have jobs) I think it's at a point where it's definitely competitive. We just need to practice our snapping at goal, because that was the main reason for all our behinds...

Competitive against 16 teams of the top men’s players from amateur leagues around Australia? Or just as entertaining to watch as amateur leagues?

Obviously the latter.

Obviously the latter.

Really? I'd say it was somewhere between the state leagues and the AFL. I'd never watch a neutral game in any other league than AFL but the AFLW is worth watching to see the Lions win and state and amateur leagues if it's a team I support and the timing's convenient.

I don't think I've ever come across a footy team with such even contributions as our women's team.

Effectively top of the ladder, but the highest ranking player for AFLCA votes is Natalie Grider in 19th.

If you were to pick an All-Australian team for the AFLW right now, there's no guarantee there'd be a single Lions player in there. Lutkins probably sneaks in, but that might be it.

I think it was in the Freo vs Carlton match before us they flashed on screen the stats each team were #1 at etc.
Looking through the team stats just on the aflw site (is there somewhere better?) We're high up for a lot, but don't really lead for anything. Except we have the lowest frees against :) Thats quite admirable granted the physical style we play with. Or a giant AFLW conspiracy... who knows. We are tied #1 in frees for.....

You're so right, and I love how we're not reliant on 1 or 2 superstars to take us over the line. I feel the only individual stats we're near the top is goal kickers with Bodie and Dax high up right. Or O'dwyer tied 2nd and Hodder tie 3rd for behinds

Its probably our defense that utilise the most individual brilliance (but together as a whole unit. if that makes sense) Or the shutdown role Svarc did like the awesome job she did on Molloy over the weekend (I think it was 5 disposals she limited her to? and a goal herself)

Not sure how far we can go. But if we clean up some of our kicking for goal, that combination of a potent forward line, our reliable defense unit and team-wide work rate where nearly everyone contributes I reckon we can beat anyone.

I think anyone in the top 6 currently could win it.
It feels like we're the most reliable of the top 6. We put in consistent performances which are generally built on team work ethic.

The question is whether we can generate the type of brilliance that often wins big games.

I hope the rain holds of for the next few days
Best we can hope for going by the BOM is the Gabba get a few showers only during this time
I am sure the ladies will cope with the weather. That is not my concern
They may consider moving this game if rain persists
The Gabba have moved the men's curtain raiser before due to wet weather so won't be a precedent
The difference this time is they are selling tickets to the curtain raiser so they may have to wear the ground being dug up before the main game

Bates on the bench surely and not many forwards as sure marking as Daks.

If it wasn't for the quiet last couple of weeks I would have also thought Nat grider was right in the mix. If she can bag a couple of goals the last two games she should at least be in the conversation
