Let the trade period whispers begin - no word on any departures (of the trade variety), but we’ve been linked to a couple of names:

Carlton is another club hoping to fast-track its AFLW list build and is targeting a significant move for Adelaide winger Maddi Newman, as well as Sydney defender Ella Heads.

Sophie McKay, daughter of Andrew (Carlton)

CARLTON is poised to select the dynamic Sophie McKay as a father-daughter selection in the Telstra AFLW Draft, after an official nomination was placed with the AFL.

Trade whispers update:

TL;DR version:
  • We’re considered the frontrunners to land Tara Bohanna (GC) should she leave.
  • Maddi Newman now expected to stay at the Crows; Ella Heads heading to Port.
  • We’re also in the mix for Bella Smith (Sydney) and Taylah Levy (Adelaide).

Trade period opens this Thursday 5th Dec, closes next Wednesday 11th Dec.

I don't understand what we are doing here. We have Pick 5 in the draft. Sophie McKay is ranked in the 5-15 range by Rookie Me Central.

Ash Centra and Havana Harris are clearly the top 2 players in the draft with Zippy Fish in that company too. Harris is tied to the Gold Coast but they have the 2nd pick. Fish is from WA but is keen on playing in Victoria seemingly. Will have to see where they have nominated.

Why would we be looking to trade down and only get 1 top 5 player, instead of 2? We can pick up Sophie for our 2nd rounder. I guess the issue there is that other bids could push our 2nd rounder out past the 18 selection mark to match a bid.

It's a national draft for the first time this year, any team can pick or bid on any player.

The 'Craft of the Draft' YouTube channel released their first video on the AFLW draft recently, one of them rated McKay at #2 and the other at #3 so it sounds like there is a very good chance she gets bid on before #5. If we traded #5 for two later picks we'd only have to use the earlier of the two to match.

Gold Coast could take another player before Harris at #2 because if she is bid on at #3 their second rounder (#20) is within the 18 pick matching window. I guess they're being cautious in case she's bid on at #1? If we traded #5 up to #2 (for example) and McKay was then bid on at #3 we wouldn't be able to match as our second rounder (#23) is outside the window so we'd have to trade that up as well.

Edit: Gold Coast have multiple highly rated academy players, they must be trying to get currency to match all of them.

I watched that Craft of the Draft video. She was ranked 2nd and 3rd amongst Victorian players.

Centra, Harris, Fish, Rasheed, O'Hehir, Painter, Howley, McDonald are all ahead of Sophie in the Rookie Me power rankings and she is the 5th Victorian.

Apologies, you are correct. I didn’t realise that video was on Victorian players only. Maybe the club thinks there’s a chance she gets bid on before #5 either way, otherwise trading down doesn’t make any sense at all.

No more talk of us trading down. Reckon we might be banking on a bid for Sophie coming after #5.

Some fantastic write ups available for those in the 5-7 range.

Adding the two Irish girls, Bohanna as our main forward focal point to take the pressure off Austin, and two top 10 midfielders ... fast tracking this rebuild.

Apparently the Swans are interested in Velardo.

SYDNEY is expected to be the busiest team on deadline day, with the club still hunting a move for North Melbourne midfielder Lulu Pullar and having recently emerged as a suitor for Carlton's Amelia Velardo.

The Swans registered an interest in Velardo across recent days and met her earlier this week, with the Blues youngster now weighing up whether she pursues their interest across Wednesday morning.
However, Sydney is light on trade chips having parted with pick No.40 on Tuesday night in a deal for Essendon's Ashleigh Van Loon and having already agreed trades for Geelong's Darcy Moloney and Richmond's Imogen Brown.

Velardo was on the outer this season. I'm not quite sure why. I suspect we will honour any request from her to move. She's tight with the playing group so we shall see.

We have 3 spots left on our list with our 3rd pick being in the 50s. I'm not sure we'd want to be taking 2 picks in that range. Maybe there is a player they want to swap.

Velardo now looking likely to stay, Swans have used all their decent picks on other trades.

Sydney's move for Pullar will likely close the door on the club's chances of sealing a deal for Carlton youngster Amelia Velardo. The Swans had been interested in potentially trading for Velardo, but now appear unlikely to progress with any move despite having met with the player earlier this week. – Riley Beveridge
