Wasn't as bad as it might've been but if they bring in "franchises" as Gillon is threatening, I won't watch it again.

Needs to be more contested somehow.

As some have suggested perhaps bonus points for goals scored within 20m. Far harder to do that than outside non pressure zooper dooper goals from 40m+
I don't think bonus points for 20m goals is the answer. Making the field a little longer might somewhat address long kicks going for easy goals. This can be achieved by getting rid of the kids on bean bags and the smoke machines behind the goals and put the goalposts back as far as possible near the fence to utilize the ground space available. This extra half kick at either end might make for another contest before it gets to the goals, making a goal a little harder to earn. Nine or ten a side might make for less uncontested possessions as well. Get rid of zooper goals too. They are not enough of a challenge and cheapen the worth of a goal.

The concept still has potential IMO, but a few positive changes where players have to contest and work for the ball and work for goals might make it seem less of a training run.

Who is the target market for AFL X?

Kids?

Disinterested Northern states public?

Overseas?
It can be for anyone, and anyone would be interested if they can make the changes that would make it seem more of a contest and less of a training run.

Having said, it was specifically designed for areas that don't have many oval fields available to play the traditional game.

I could only sit through a few minutes, so my observations aren't based on much.

The idea to remove congestion also reduced contested ball. Either a player hit a target or turned it over. There were few spoils, or contests at ground level. It was almost basketball-like, not because of the lack of contact but because you had to really stuff up not to move the ball into scoring range.

Maybe for playing in overseas markets and at junior level, where skill level is lower and disposals shorter, it might work. At professional level, it just seemed uncompetitive. Part of that is no doubt because its early pre-season, part because the game is new and defence hasn't adapted, but it was pretty poor from the little I could for myself to sit through.

How about not a bonus for just any goal from close range, but a 15-20 metre circle from the goal, where an actual mark and conversion is the Zooper (f### I hate using that term!), and removing the bonus altogether for a long shot...?

A 40 metre kick is nothing special, and people want the contests. The best contest is a marking wrestle at FF - everyone loves that. Maybe add a player or two just to pressurise things around the field if the game everywhere else onfield is too freeflowing, but give big points if you can pick out a player in that small zone...

The game of AFLX would develop to the point where you select a specialist FF...there can't be a downside to that...!

But if you did all that the game may no longer be dynamic high octane power enhanced etc

See, I feel as if franchises are the only way to make it successful. I enjoyed the concept. I hope the local team I play for implements it into our training program because for fitness and skill execution it looks great. I found myself getting really into it on Friday night to the point where I was nervous when we were playing Melbourne.
However, the general public aren't going to get on board in their droves the same way I did if it remains a competition with 3 premiers, no prize, and no marquee players. It needs to be treated as unique as the concept of the game itself. Whether it's made up teams like the BBL have, or current teams having the option of offering short term AFLX contracts to other clubs players, something needs to be implemented to create interest outside of 'well technically my Hawks are playing even though Cyril, Mitchell, Roughie and Jager aren't'.

Pretty much a glorified training drill with a sponsor getting some exposure if a goal was kicked.

Nice to see some of the kids play because with only two preseason games they will likely miss out otherwise. With only two preseason games the kids won't get much chance to get any early exposure which is a shame. Clubs will need to get their round 1 teams sorted with only two hit outs. Seems the clubs aren't too happy about that either.

Didn't hate it, meh sums it up well.

Certainly needs more contests if it's going to be a reasonable analogue of the traditional game. Ten a side maybe? Can still call it AFLX

The day private ownership and franchises come to the AFL, in any format, is the day the comp will cease to exist as we know and love it.

How long til the AFL are selling our own clubs off to medalling millionaires who only care about making a profit?

**** AFL X.

As opposed to the AFL who only care about profit.

Supposedly one aim is that by playing on a rectangular field, it’s far easier to stage games, particularly overseas.

What if that backfires? Speaking hypothetically of course, what if the rest if the world really takes a real shine to AFLX? Where does that leave the traditional game? This quaint relic only played Down Under?

It’s not like Rio and Paris and Shanghai are going to start bulldozing multimillion dollar real estate just to install cricket ovals.

As opposed to the AFL who only care about profit.

Yes, but then the AFL will only care about appeasing millionaires, who have a different agenda than what clubs do (bottom line first, winning second). There are plenty of examples of this in private ownerships in overseas comps.

It’s only boring because it means nothing and the clubs know it and therefore it isn’t played with great intensity, passion or with the best players.
If clubs don’t care neither will anyone else.

How is it possible to get teams playing this and make it meaningful to them? That’s the trick and it’s near impossible.

If the AFL want to get serious about this they need serious rewards/prizes on offer.

Now I’m not saying they should do this but if the winning teams of the groups or an overall winner was to get premiership points or bonus salary cap room than you would see a much bigger intensity lift, the best players playing and the fans caring.
That would than show if AFLX is truly any good or not.
Maybe the competition can be played for extra draft picks? Or for example the order of the 2nd or 3rd, 4th round etc of the draft?

Yes I see the ridiculousness of playing a different game of sorts having an impact on the actual game but if AFLX is to ever be taken seriously or see the best of it you must make teams/fans care.

Teams only care about a premiership so it must have an effect on that. Plus get a better trophy and lose the gimmicky stuff.

Another idea is to pump the hell out of a World Cup, bring international sides to Australia to play the game with live coverage and maybe international sides could be given money to auction for 2 or 3 AFL players.

Of course these are just ideas and most of us wouldn’t like the idea but it would lift the interest immediately.
I wouldn't use draft picks but offer serious $ outside of salary cap eg $100k per win and extra $250k for GF winner split only to those playing

(Numbers pulled out of a$$)
