Reeks of the AFL creating a solution to a non-existent problem.

No it really doesn't

There are a stack of reasons the AFL is doing this and they have stated as much

-It provides extra content out of season
-It can be more easily "exported" as an "elite" product in existing rectangular stadiums in a fast a more accessible format
-it validates and develops a smaller version of the game that can help with expansion

Can't say I find that a very convincing stack of reasons.

The footy world doesn't need "extra content" out of season. The AFL may see an opportunity for additional revenue, but that just makes this a company diversifying its revenue stream and exploiting its resources (in a way I know I certainly don't appreciate).

And the world is not crying out for bastardised footy on a rectangle much more than it's crying out for footy in swimming pools. After all, there are countless swimming pools around the world, presenting an opportunity for AFLH2O to be the gateway for expansion. Or maybe American Ninja Footy?

It all feels like me-tooism and a play at making extra bucks dressed up as something else.

I dunno, maybe it's just that I don't like the concept!

Edit: Sorry for being a sarcastic prick. :)

Cricket
Soccer
Horse Racing.

And you say the footy world doesn’t need extra content?
Most of us are screaming out for something to counter the sheer boredom of the off season.

Then it sounds like you're all set with AFLXboxOneX.

AFLX sounds like a pr0n website you'd expect to find dick picks of players on.

Not an ideal visual imagery for me to start my Monday morning with.

Certainly valid you don't like the concept....but it is certainly not the case they are doing this aimlessly

It certainly doesn't need to be justified by the "world crying out for it" either. What matters is whether the AFL believe there is sufficiently high probability of success to justify the relatively low risks of trialing it

What the reaction to it demonstrates, IMHO, is the deep conservatism of AFL fans collectively. People seem threatened by even a trial of it

The bottom line is that the AFL can trial whatever they want and seem to see it as their job to continually "innovate". Fits in perfectly with the modern corporate ethos of growth or death.

Given how much the rules have been tinkered with and how much the game has fundamentally changed I think it's entirely unfair to label footy fans as conservative compared to other sports. If anything I'd call it change fatigue.

From a personal perspective I watch many other sports and roll with pretty much whatever is thrown with me. AFLX just seems like a waste of time. I may be proven wrong.

The issue is the changing nature of sport. It's becoming much more entertainment oriented & geared towards the short attention span. So, um....

Yeah I forgot where I was going.

Oh yeah that's it have a look at T20, pure entertainment. Then look at the A-league, it's more a nightclub than sport. Sadly this is where sport is heading IMHO & I don't want Aussie Rules to die so I've accepted that somewhere down the line it's going to change bigtime.

I'm not overly happy about it, just see it as inevitable.

I think you're right, change like this is inevitable to some degree. Some of it I even like. But I'm determined to be that old man yelling at clouds, right to the bitter end.
