AFLX kick and giggle aside, I reckon the Dees are going to challenge for the flag this year.

They don't have any finals experience though.

Richmond and the Bulldogs at least had a tiny taste of finals action before winning it all.

I expect Melbourne will have a Richmond 2013-15 period and might be lucky to snare a couple finals wins in that too.

Brisbane obviously poised for a big year.

Can we close this thread now, let's hope it doesn't return

Take a look at page 57 of todays Monopoly Mail. The headline reads, AFLX's overseas push. I reckon this abomination is here to stay and there is every chance it will get bigger. Of course the article reads like the Clubs are pushing for an overseas expansion but we know it will be Gil and Co's idea. Gil already has $ signs in his eye sockets. Not convinced that Clubs would want to be interrupting their preseason by jetting players all over the globe and risking injury.

Looks real good, not to get too footy jumpers board, but they should embrace the orange more heavily in the home (more orange on Guernsey and orange shorts) and then rock heavy charcoal as a clash. Phase out the white essentially.

Also, aflx is still shit.
Their colours are surprisingly good imo but the design of their regular jumper is ordinary

Watched a little bit of it over the three nights, was neither a runaway success or a failure.

Pros

- AFL would be reasonably happy with the crowds that turned out each night with about what was expected turning up
- Can see potential for the game at the grassroots level (low contact, fast, not requiring huge numbers and good option for those looking for a team sport but time poor) utilising the accessibility of rectangular fields a very smart idea
- Clubs like it, basically a high intensity, low physicality training run
- I thought the broadcast of the rectangular field looked pretty cool, even at Etihad the setup they had behind the goals and marquee area was an interesting concept

Cons
- Whilst is fast moving it doesn't highlight the signature skills that make our sport great (high marking, contests), hence as a vehicle for taking the game to the world I'm sceptical.
- At times just far too uncontested and too easy to rebound and score.
- A bit over commercialised, yeah I get it's just a pre-season trial concept but the "zooper" goals, flashing posts & blaring commentary over the sound system is tacky
- Does take a bit of the marketing and spotlight from AFLW which I think should be the AFL's focus as far as growth areas for the sports future go

So it was worth a crack and if you listen to the miserable conservative hordes on bigfooty you'd never see anything different attempted. I think we'll see it again, I don't mind it for what it is as a pre-season warmup but from here I think they need to start establishing AFLX competitions at the grass roots focusing on that time poor looking for a casual team sport market and use the version involving professionals to support the growth of that by increasing visibility of the version of the game.

Would take nothing out of the performances of individual players and teams though. But that is by and large the case with pre-season footy anyway.
