It's just the latest example of AFL imperialism, as the AFL strives to dominate the calendar. This is also the real reason why the Women have to play their season in summer

I don’t agree with this.

The women don’t play during the summer because the AFL wants to dominate the calendar.

They play during the summer because they can’t afford to be competing with the men.

As much as I enjoy the AFLW, it cannot compete with the men. Asking it to - especially during its infancy - is a good way to kill the league quickly. It would not survive.

This is quite possibly the worst thing to happen to footy since Port Adelaide Football Club decided to sing a song before a home game that is not their club song nor has any relevance to any history of the club, but only requires their supporters to know just 7 words. AFLX is at about that level. Port Adelaide supporters must be loving it, then.

Yeah how dare Port create atmosphere and fan engagement at their home games. All traditions and history was born out of nothing.

Agree that the women can’t compete with the men but think blind Freddy can see the AFL is only interested in expanding its brand to untapped markets.

That's a load of rubbish as well.

They don't have to compete with the men because they are ... women.

If the league truly believed in the venture then they would be scheduling the AFLW games as curtain-raisers to the regular AFL games. This would ensure some spectators would get to the ground earlier plus they can watch both genders from their club of choice.

Wrong

Yeh, Nah. Wasn't expecting much and it certainly didn't let me down. Unless you have an invested interest, like watching the new Blue boys tonight, it is not much of a spectacle for non supporters.

I watched a bit of whilst sleepy head and missed some of it but all in all, was ok as an alternative practice session for about 10 footballers from each club.
Felt like a basketball version of football on first viewing.
Be looking forward to some of our young players have a bit of this session too.
Will not be paying money to see it though. Will just have a look on tv. If there was a practice match on certainly would have gone tonight.

It’s because 20/20 is crud, just like AFLX.
It’s invented for people who take selfies.
Not talking about AFLX here but 20/20 is crud? It's a phenomenon and is getting bigger and bigger, it's extremely entertaining and great for families. All the grounds are nearly bursting at the seems when matches are on. Selfies that you speak of, Whats wrong with Mum and Daughter/Son having some fun by taking a photo and if lucky getting on the big screen! I can thing of a lot more shit in the world that is wrong than that.

It is what it is. A contrived, abbreviated version of the game played on grounds that would be readily available around the world.
Not a threat to our great game, but a harmless piece of promotion which has allowed mostly second stringers some exposure.
As long as AFL doesn't go stupid with (more)gimmickry promoting it I have no problem.

I really don't know what some people expect with the negativity. I did not have high hopes for it, but find it acceptable. Not unlike
watching the across ground match sim at the training sessions I managed to see at Maroochydore, with a little more competitiveness.

Will certainly be checking out our boys tonight, as I am sure will all the naysayers on here. Will at least alleviate the need for a training
report.
Perfect Coona I struggled to articulate it.:thumbsu:

How can one not be pumped about seeing Dow, LOB and Kennedy in Carlton colours?

Want to see the boys handle the footy cleanly, take the game on and hit targets.

If they don't, sakc.
I’m proper exited Shan. I initially thought aflx was ok viewing until 5 minutes when I realised I was just exited for footy. But watching the new recruits tonight has me up and about.

Footy's footy, starts at 2:40 PM here and you better believe I'm taking a half day to go down to the pub.

Are these 'zooper' goals endorsed or sponsored by Zooper Doopers, or did some peanut actually decide to call them 'zooper' goals because 'super' lacked creativity?
Sponsored.

I didn't see it, but isn't it all about an adaptable game that can work in China. If there's a freak show at it from China, then an AFL club could bring them over, which would triple our tv deals and pump limitless money into the game
Given the amount of aerobically poor players that looked like superstars, I doubt it.

You have to stop looking at it like its traditional AFL. It's a new sport with some AFL concepts.I found it entertaining and loved the pace of it. The sport will be tinkered with, but down the track and played in the off season, I would pay to see it.

Yep. And I also get bored with basketball. Up one end, shoot. Up the other end, shoot. AFLX is the same horse, different jockey.

I've seen the basketball comparisons, but basketball is way more defensive. This is basically soccer with massive goals and no offside, which makes for a terrible sport in terms of tactical depth. One kick and you're in on goal...

Silver ball booted thank god.

AFLX’s controversial silver balls have been given the boot.

The first night of the new footy format saw complaints from broadcasters and fans over the lack of visibility of the balls at night, with yellow Sherrins used for the last three games at Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium.

That move will be made permanent in the final two AFLX tournaments, in Melbourne on Friday and Sydney on Saturday.

Geelong’s Mitch Duncan and other AFLX players believe the silver ball took some shine off the debut of the short-format experiment.

Yep.

The hallmark of any good sport, even high scoring ones, is that a well organised defence can repel most attacking efforts.

In a game with so much space, awarding the maximum score (almost two goals) for a player running 5 steps past the centre-line then doing a kick that 95% of AFL players can do is a joke.

The ratio of goal size to field size is crazy compared to other sports. I think a lot of international athletes would laugh at the low-skill threshold required to be proficient at this.

Parts of it just weren't well thought out at all.
