Marchy just needs to know his limitations coming out of defence.

In this format unfortunately if you're the only one deep you have to be the one distributing. No doubt in the real stuff he'll have peripheral players, or a contest up the line if he's got no other option.

He certainly wasn't the only one scrubbing kicks.

Interesting game, doesn't have the toughness, pressure, competitiveness or difficulty of AFL. Just looks a bit easy and bland as a game but depends what you like. It's what would happen if you opened the game up to old style positional football of the mid 90s and prior with modern skills and athleticism. difficult to defend, just open, keepings off possession football with loads of scoring. It's pretty much an AFL Basketball hybrid. Certainly see a spot for this game at amateur level. In terms of what it will become, it's hard to say whether it will be what the BBL/IPL is to cricket or what indoor cricket is to cricket. It would make a good training drill and it would be good for AFLW with the shorter field, tendency to be higher scoring and less contact. Would be a good summer/off season game or over 30/35's game.

It's not really meant to be AFL, it is what it is. They've created an open, free flowing free scoring game. Might appeal to international spectators, though modern AFL is more defensive, difficult and tactical which is more like what you see from a lot of field sports internationally (Rugby, NFL, Soccer). Depends if you want to offer something up similar or something different. It is however very similar to basketball.

Dow - looked awesome, real pace, skill and smarts, looks like the player we have needed for years. Will be one of those hard to tackle powerful centermen. Strong at the hips. Will be very good.
O'Brien - Looked pretty good too, looked comfortable and competent. Think he'll be a good player but not as developed as Dow.
Lamb - Got to the right places but skills were average. Handling and some kicking was not on.
Pickett - looks quick and skillful and not too bad in defence.
Polson - Looked alright but more physical development and harder physical competing at times will be his go. Not overly quick but looks a good mover with skills. Potential small centerman type. Has some potential but ways to go just yet. Probably similar player to Graham. Wasn't quite neat enough or involved enough.
Kennedy - Looks a class player. Fraction light in the upper body from that shoulder but he should run out games well.
Silvagni - Not great one on one but he leads and marks alright. His go will be as a hard leading forward.
Macreadie - looks alright but he's physically a long way off. Good skills, good with ball in hands. One on one and tackling aren't there yet.
Marchbank - Looked alright but not his game, his one on one stuff against the bigger forwards will again not be great but his role won't be dealing with them. Wouldn't mind seeing him get a bit stronger in the upper body some day but he has had some shoulder soreness which may have held this back. Looks fit, should be able to run all day.
Williamson - Hell of a powerful kick, looked good, want to see more run and carry, just seemed to want to assess things rather than get it and go then look. That's ok but want to see him take the game on and use his pace. Like how he's physically matured.
Kerridge - Not his style of footy, just contributed ok.
LeBois - Looks to have physically developed nicely. Wasn't super involved but he has skills and pace which is a start.
Fisher - Loved his game, hunger to apply pressure and was great with his carry and kicking. Great skills and has developed his body. Showed good composure. If his ball handling under pressure improves and he's one touch off the ground this year then I'm excited at his prospect. I'm tipping it will.
O'Shea - Thought he looked alright, defended and attacked when the opportunity came.

Game suited quick, skillful impact type players. Players who are more inside players or grind it out, run all day types and really big types aren't really suited to this. If it was serious our best side would probably be this:
B: Simpson Jones
C: Cripps Fisher Murphy
F: Curnow Pickett
IC: Garlett Docherty SPS
EM: Dow Cuningham McKay Williamson

Definitely keen to see your reaction to Paddy's year ;)

I think he missed one or two easy kicks (as did quite a few of the guys blowing out some cobwebs) but I like the way he arches his back before he kicks.
That technique is how Campo had such horrible back-hamstring issues. Not a fan of it.

Dow needs to practice how to stab pass (i.e. let the ball drop slightly lower and closer than usual when the kick is under 30 metres).

Huh??? Ok then Marchy is a worry because he missed targets in a practice game. Give me a break. Every pre season people read too much into practice games... fact or fiction???

Nothing to do with Caleb.

Big footy knobs at their finest...writing off players from an afl x game

Just watched our 2nd game against North. First thing I noticed was Fisher's size, he's done a heap of work and looks primed to step up. He has a mean side step, speed, quick hands and just a tough competitor. He'll be able to break tackles that he just couldn't last year which is huge for his style of play.

Not much to take out of the game in terms of how good/bad we are going to be. It's less of an indicator than the JLT and that's saying something.

Marchbank wasn't as bad as I thought he was going to be considering the comments on here. Granted he was pretty average in the first game from the snippets I saw at the pub but I have no doubt that he's a star in the making.

Other things I liked:

Macreadie - thought he was neat and composed. Still needs to fill into his frame as he gets knocked off the ball a little easy. Still a lot to like.

Pickett - looks fit. Don't think he is ever going to be a huge ball winner but he is a game breaker and those long runs down the wing are going to be exciting.

Dow - round 1 lock. I think he'll be better than SPS and the latter is going to be a star. Just has that rare mix of speed and strength that will make him stand out.

Lebois - just win more footy. He's all class but just doesn't get near it enough.

All in all...it's almost like circle work. Good to see the boys out there though. Bring on the regular season!

My assessment:

Marchbank - Confirmed my doubts over his ball use and pace. Not a great showing.

Macreadie - Big on this kid. Lovely kick, courageous and finds the pill. Could go past all of our tall backs.

Fisher - he's my boy. Gun and a little legend.

Pickett - Exciting moments linking up with fish. He's the X factor we need.

JSOS - See marchbank.

Polson - solid effort. Needs to bulk up and find more footy. Big year ahead at northern.

Lebois - little steps. has class

Lamb - No good. Depth in the 2s.

O'Shea - serviceable depth

Dow - Rememebr watching him in the champs last year and thinking to myself, this kid has got it. Lovely debut.

LOB - will be a handy link in our ball movement chain. Solid outing.

Kennedy - Big boy with clean hands. Will flourish in the contest. Not his format.

Willo - Kid is a jet and a behemoth!

Overall very happy with how we went. Kids showed lots and can't wait to support them all this year!

This game format is not for the aficionados. It is being developed for those who know little or nothing about the game. It’s clear that the format needs to be tweaked and that is why we have it for our viewing pleasure (mainly displeasure). I can’t see it being a regular pre-season feature of the AFL. It might get another go with the tweaked format but that’s about it as far as I can see.

I see it as a vehicle for recently retired players who are past the rigours of being a professional AFL player. The AFL could sign about 40 of them on contracts and take them around the world to promote the game with these Mickey Mouse matches.

What a gig!

Yes agree with those who say Williamson looks like he can go up a notch this year

Pickett looks like he’s chaffing at the bit to show what he can do

Fisher is an exciting prospect this year too, the type of player we haven’t had since Camporeale in my opinion

Kennedy looks alright. Dow is the second coming of Gibbs just has that look of a guy who is born to play.

Dow will be better than Gibbs and I rate Gibbs (and I don't base that on last night)

Aaand it begins

I'm sure the coaching group will be keeping an eye on how he's distributing, but he looked like he was attempting to get as balanced as possible before kicking.

Is there a form I need to submit somewhere to be able to apply the same analytical techniques as you?

Mate, I'm partially baiting you, but that escalated very quickly.

We know you take your analysis seriously, and you've got a amazing ability to spot things others can't, but there's no need to get snippy about something so trivial.

No doubt he's still developing aspects of his play (I know his kicking was a concern of yours pre-draft) but he certainly showed some good signs.

Marchbank - Didn't quite pull things together but he looked dangerous nonetheless. Love his confidence and desire to take the game on. His intercept marking, especially without Doc, is going to be vital for us this year. I think the added responsibility will fast track him finding the right balance.

Polson - Could swear I was watching Murph at times. Way to go but I see potential.

Kennedy - Improved as the game went on and think we'll see that in the season also. Lacks polish but he and Cripps will have some big final terms.

Pickett - Confidence was there from the get go last night. Excellent coaching to whoever has been getting into his head.

Dow - The comparisons to Dangerfield are spot on imo. Speed, strength and competitiveness is a rare and lethal combination.

Kerridge - May be pegged as just warming the seat but looked a leader imo and I'm keen to see how his year progresses.

Silvagni - The format only served to highlight his weaknesses. Shouldn't have played.

Nothing I saw would have me concerned at all for our progress.

As for AFLX itself, games were too short and scoring a Zooper a little too easy, although I see other games had much less so maybe ours was a bit skewed. With retired players and more development I see potential.

Agree on your assessment of Kennedy. He'll be better in the real thing. Get him to the G for round 1.
