I dunno why everyone is so staunchly against. I'm keen to see the boys play.

I think the could have done without the silver ball and 10 point goal but I'll watch.

How does the game begin? Is there a ruck contest? Obviously the ball is kicked in after a goal but how does it start a half? And i assume there are still ball ups after a tackle? So who plays ruck for us from that selected side? Marchy??

Exactly this. It’s been a long wait to see them play. I’ll be happy as long as there aren’t any injuries and we get a good look at what will come in the future.

I’m pretty sure Lobbe is selected to ruck. On the topic of positions, other than Jack it doesn't look like there's many natural tall forwards selected so i assume macreadie and marchbank will both have a go up forward as well as in defense

I didnt see Lobbe , my mistake.

Apparently from what I've read most sides wont be playing a tall forward and will just go for goals from the midfield.

It starts with a ruck contest, one of few that you will see.Yes there are still ball ups and probably Lobbe when on the ground to do the tap work.Marchy and Silvagni could do it as well.

10 minute halves is such a tease. Have a feeling I’ll come out of it not knowing wtf just happened because the game was too short.

Depends on how you look at it.

Sevens tournaments are great fun and seriously entertaining. You get to see a hell of a lot of Rugby over the course of the day and there’s basically no down time... 7 minute half, 1 minute break, 7 minute half, then the next teams are out almost immediately after the game. Because of the short halves everything is at a crazy high intensity. It actually works really well, even for guys like me who really like the traditional forward play and technical stuff (scrums, lineouts, etc) in the real game (XVs).

I don’t see why AFLX can’t get to a point where it’s an enjoyable supplementary game to the real stuff. Maybe it’s future is purely rooted in the preseason and predominantly featuring junior and fringe players, which is fine to me. Outside of the recent Olympics best rugby players haven’t spent their careers playing sevens either.

It is what it is but I’ll tell you what, I’m keen to see our young lads with a Sherrin in hand, regardless of the format.

As someone who has never watched Rugby 7's, could you tell me if the 7's teams are made up of players from the regular team, or if the players are specialist 7's players?

Ta.

Nearly time for the hit and giggle form of the game to start . Like others only interested in it to see the likes of Dow Obrien and our other young players strut their stuff .

Completely different teams. They play in different competitions and don’t just jump back and forth between the two games. What does often happen is players represent Australia in sevens at a young age, say 20 or so, then transition into XVs and start playing for a Super Rugby side. The players that have done that often arrive incredibly fit and with better 1v1 attack and defence. It sort of builds their footy iq in terms of space, more so when it’s open and there’s a lot of it. Maybe we could stick some of the hyper talented youngsters in who’s bodies aren’t ready for AFL proper yet. Or some similar development tool.

The sevens guys/gals tend to be the quicker, more mobile players. You’re not getting any of the big boppers that are crucial in the 15 a Side game. Similar to how we’re not seeing many rucks or key position players named in the AFLX.

To clarify I can’t see AFLX ever ‘taking over’ the main game. But I’m not gonna write it off just yet, it might be watchable, perhaps even sustainable as a supplementary item to AFL.

Rugby 7s is still largely the same game same field modified rules

T20 is in the same bracket

AFLX is truly a wtf experiment and in my view from what I’ve seen looks like some abomination thought up by self appointed and anointed marketing geniuses. Just another step toward destroying what was a beautifully unique game and arguably the hardest to master even if it was only played in one continent in the world.

I'm out on Friday night, but will IQ and watch over the weekend. Not really sure how much (if anything) we can take out of this weeks matches.
