Getting to the truth

It is important to remember that these stories did not risk national security. They invited criticism, not danger. The raids on the ABC and the home of a News Corp reporter were about government embarrassment.

The two incidents should be treated separately. The raid on the home of a News Corp reporter appears to be baseless and was about government embarrassment. It remains to be seen whether the raid on the ABC offices had any merit in terms of risk to national security. Either way, it's not a good look for the new government. It was Turnbull who put Dutton in charge of Australian Homeland. Maybe Morrison needs to reign him in a little.

The raids on the ABC offices were designed for one purpose only.

Potato head wants to know where the leaks came from.

Then he can have his retribution.

Nothing more, nothing less.

This government does all its best work through the AFP. They hide behind "I cannot speak about current investigations" when it suits them and they unleash the AFP on their enemies and hide behind "we respect the law" when that suits them.

And every time it blows up they simply wait until the whole thing blows over, we take another tiny step to being a police state, and every three years we vote the mutts back in.

And yet they just voted Peter f***en Dutton back in with an increased majority.

Blame UAP/ON/Anning for that one.

His primary vote was more or less the same.

I noted prior to the election that the sheer apathy of his electorate could save him.

RE this whole AFP raids thing, the anti-US/pro-Russian SAKER blog stated that one sign of a declining developed democratic nation is when the police/counter-terrorist outfits treat perceived dissent by individuals or the media as tantamount to espionage/sedition/treason/terrorism.

This is an example of such IMO. From what I can tell, reading through this thread, the AFP raids were unwarranted.

People have a right to know if information that is released might reflect badly upon ADF personnel. After all, they are effectively serving the taxpayer.

Politicians are employees that get to set their own wages and their own KPIs.

The people, via the media mostly, review their work and decide if they get to keep their job.

So politicians attack the media. The media isn't perfect by a long shot, and many of the good ones are leaving for PR jobs - some after realising they're not going to be the superstar face of their organisation. Parts of the media are also guilty of seeking privileges and abusing their position.

But would we rather have university educated, experienced journalists doing the job of watching the government? Or the government marking their own homework to the applause of random YouTubers and social media algorithm gamers?

More than "not perfect by a long shot". There's a reason trust in the media has been diminishing rapidly in western countries even many years before Trump/Brexit/ScoMo (those that criticise the media) etc. - and that's because it's full of s**t. Media has become completely dumbed down, with the commercial networks aimed at mass-market bogans, the ABC and SBS run by a cabal of far-left identity politics obssesed nutcases, Murdoch online becoming a trashy NRL news outlet/comic book, and Fairfax online becoming pro-Labour propaganda with a sprinkling of Clementine Ford nuttery.

What's also changed is that journos think they are now activists and freedom crusaders, and without them "democracy dies in darkness". Just bring us the news and let us decide what to think, guys.

And if the person at the top of the heap doesn’t like the news?

I would prefer this obviously, but the media haven't really done a great job of vetting governments or opposition candidates for quite a while. Latham was probably the last opposition candidate to be properly vetted*. Even Rudd's...controversial role in the Goss government was overlooked back in the day. Additionally, the media's inattention gave us the 'golden years' (LOL) of governance that game with the Abbott government. I also wouldn't call the coverage of Scott Morrison unsympathetic. Plus, what was his role in removing Turnbull? Nobody really knows, because the media didn't discuss it much.

Hence why, as GoldenSky notes, trust in the media is at a low.

*Some will say Shorten, but spreading the narrative that he's unpopular doesn't really count as vetting. Also, his role in the Rudd/Gillard debacle was never really explored during the 2016/2019 election campaigns.
