Movies & TV African Animals

I’m planning a trip to Africa with my sister later this year. I’ve booked tickets and everything. We’re going to see Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe and Zambia - apparently both sides provide a different fabulous perspective.

Most of all I want to see African animals. You can see both safari plains and jungle animals which is great because I want to see African elephants but also would like to see a leopard because they are lovely. Baby leopards would be the best but I’m not sure that’s too safe with a protective mum around. I wonder if they have lemurs around there because I like their tails and I would also like to smell an African civet.

Anyway I’m going to practice photography with my camera (bought 2nd hand from my sister who took up nature photography then dropped the hobby).

What are some good African animals I should try to find?

We’re also thinking of going to one of the central or western African countries because my sister studied anthropology and archaeology so is into primates and wants to see great apes in the wild. The persistent political instability and the most devastating poverty I’ve read about makes me a bit nervous of central Africa so we need to look into it more closely.

Has anyone here travelled to Africa who might have suggestions about where to go?

Practising photography is good fun. My mother was a photographer so could probably find a digital SLR if you need one.

The one thing I learnt about photography from my travels is to put the camera away and enjoy what you’re experiencing as a priority.

Cool but what animal should I try and look for. Maybe some King Scorpions?

I went to Africa for my honeymoon. It was fantastic.

We did Botswana -> Vic Falls, Zimbabwe -> Kruger Park, South Africa

You will see plenty of elephants. Leopards are a little rarer but saw a number of them over the month I was over there. As far as babies go, you'll be fine as long as you're in a vehicle, the animals are completely unbothered by the dozens of busses filled with tourists rolling up to gawk at them. If you see a Cheetah then you'll have done even better than we did.

I believe Lemurs are only a Madagascar thing. Plenty of Baboons and Vervet Monkeys around though, and Bush Babies if you do a night safari.

Lions are always magnificent and the birdwatching is amazing and absolutely worth investing some time into. Adds a whole extra layer to your animal sighting.

I'd also highly recommend doing a walking safari if you get a chance with a good guide. Being on the ground feels completely different to being in a bus and the animals respond to you completely differently. We had an elephant give us a bit of a mock charge and some lions tell us to piss off while they were eating.

Also when you go to Vic Falls don't bother with a raincoat or those ponchos people are selling out the front. It will do nothing.
