According to this table on Footy Geek we had an average age of 23.83 years for the 40 players on our 2006 primary list as at 01/01/06.

If you really want to know the average age as at 1st November 2006 then do the following sum;

23.83 x 40 = 953.20 years,
less the total age, as at 01/01/06, of the 10 players that were delisted,
then add 10 months for remaining 30 players still on the list ie (10/12) x 30 = 25,
then add the age of Bentley and Logan at 1/11/6,
Finally divide this total by 32.

Or you can do what I did and look at the players birth dates, work out their current age then divide by the number of players. Took me a few minutes at work and came to 22.8 something. I rushed it a bit so not quite confident of the exact figure to two decimal places. :)

Your maths bugged me Toots, so I downloaded the 2006 list into a spread sheet. I have an average age as at 1/1/6 of 23.79 compared to Footy Geeks 23.83, so that's close enough. As at 1 /11/6 the average age of our 32 players is 23.43 and will be 23.60 as at 1/1/07.

If we recruit 8 players with an average age of 19 years or total of 152 years at 1/1/7 our list will have an average age of 22.68 years on that date. If we recruit 8 players with an average age of 20 years or total of 160 years by 1/1/7 the new average on that date will be 22.88 years.

If you look at Footy Geeks' list of average ages at 1/1/6, you will see that Hawthorn was at the bottom with 22.77 years, 11 clubs between 23 and 23.99, and 4 clubs, Adelaide, StK, Freo and Melbourne were over 24. We have 8 kids who will still be teenagers and may have as many as 16 on the list. In the space of 2 years we could go from having the oldest list to the youngest.:eek:

From Footy Geeks' summary;

Interestingly, the two Grand Finalists from last year both sit exactly in the middle of the table below which shows the average age of each list for 2006. It is apparent that Adelaide and St Kilda both have the oldest lists in the competition indicating that they may soon get ‘too old’, so any premiership success must be achieved in the next year or two before each of these clubs has to go through a new rebuilding phase.

The numbers may look like they are close but the difference between Adelaide on top and Hawthorn on the bottom is over 500 days for each player on the list. For a list of 40 players that is 20,000 extra days (around 54 years) of experience. That is significant difference.

I bow to your superior methodology

Just finished some work at home and had another look at the ages. I now get 23.58 average age in November this year. (I worked out the ages to the nearest month) I was working the individual ages out in my head when I posted earlier and I think I had some of them a year younger than they are.

Feel free to find fault with my individual ages anyone.

Close enough Toots. You have rounded it to the nearest month where as in excel calculates it to the actual day. I just knew that our average age was still over 23 before the draft, despite several 30 plus year olds retiring. At least I now have the info in a spreadsheet to do next years once we have filled up our list.

Edit: And this makes up for most of the difference Toots.
Chaplin 23-Feb-86 24.75
Chaplin is 20.70 years old at 1/11/6. (23.58-23.43)x32 = 4.8 years of which 4 years is made up by the Chaplin error.

There's a date diff function in excel isn't there? I couldn't be bothered looking it up yesterday. More haste less speed. :eek:

Edit:- How about a quick lesson REB? You put the birthdate in one cell, the current date in another then I'm having trouble finding the appropriate fx.

Edit again:- Think I've found it. You just subtract the earlier date from the more recent one! Tsk.

So after the draft where we picked up 5 teenagers, and 2, 20-24.9 year olds, (Westhoff and Rodan) our age stucture at 1/1/7 will be

Teenagers 13
20 to 24.9 17
25+ 9
Average Age 22.88

If you look at the Footy Geek list, (link in post # 3) you can see how we compare to other teams list at the start of this year.
