Strategy Aggressive reset

Gives JK a Chance to cash in again in 5 years time.

He'd have a contract with options anyway.

This isn't an issue.

Sign on is $10M/9 years

We should continue look for some bargains ala Marley/Hrovat/Ahern. The likes of Balic, Tucker and McKenna are young, out of contract and have serious untapped talent, plus we could probably get them without giving up either of our top picks. Trade Goldy and Swallow for pick upgrades, resign Browny, Mountford, Wagner and Mullett (unless someone offers up a 2nd), then hit the draft hard.
Tucker re-signed with freo

However freo have balic, crozier and Sheridan out of contract as potnential cheap gets

Okay, as most expected we missed out on Martin, but Kelly is still well and truly a live issue.

What I don't want to see is the club shirk from it's "aggressive reset" mantra that it has sold to the members, in favor of some ground up rebuild.

I will be MEGA pissed if this occurs.

There's other players out there.

Go and get them!

What exactly are you proposing?

Target more free agents this year and next? Or trading for players? Or both?

I think we need to wear another year or two in the bottom 6. Accumalte elite young talent. Then with a stable of elite youth start trying to bring in the 26-28 year olds via free agency.

We've never seen a "bottom out" via the draft as we haven't been financially able to. We can now. Get the gun kids in. Spend money on developing them. Do it properly and ensure it works.

People always use Melbourne and Carlton as the poster clubs of not bottoming out. Yet hawthorn did and won a flag off the back of it, which begat more flags. Collingwood did it and won a flag. Bulldogs did it and won a flag.

I feel the worst thing we can do is try and take short cuts, bring in older players that will get us to 10th - 5th on the ladder then have another "aggressive reset".

Keep going hard for Kelly. If we get him that would be awesome. If we miss him we use pick 4 and try to find another 2 picks inside 20.

Then we target another elite mid for next years free agency and throw everything at them. Continue to be aggressive.

Some coin can be shelved for next season with short term contracts for senior players, but we will have LT & Spittas money freed up at the end of next season.

We need to look for another option aside from Kelly this draft. Whether it be a Rockliff or some younger spec picks in the Ahern/Williams/Hrovat mould.
We would still have significant cash to make up unless we get another big star.

We have only gotten rid of three from this list, 2 rookies and a senior, yet this will probably cover most of our draft picks.

Who do we then drop to cover some young cheap guys? Probably another young cheap guy. Leaving us will with too much cap space.

Gazza would be exciting for the footy club, would not come with all the baggage of disloyalty, and would probably be a nice in-between for him and could be really attractive.

Rockliff might be a tough one, but a good one to get - afl would hate us (nothing new), and he has vocally committed to resigning.

Who else is out there next year?

Also, I really think next years draft could be a 2001 geeing style draft for us and set us up for a long time. Say pick 5, Thomas, Scott and Crocker.

Also, if cap is an issue I'd keep on Waite, Gibbo, Thomas etc with the intention of playing them more in the vfl than not. Make as much of a success of it as possible in our first year. Use te older guys to fill in for kids as needed.

Martin was always going to be too much $$$, and would have caused a rift amongst the playing group. I am not sad at all that we missed that trade.

Kelly and rockliff would be perfect though. Two quality midfielders and we are contending finals again.

Hawthorn didn't stay down long - they doubled their money when they were down by trading out strong players for picks. No-one else had the guts to do the same, and now free agency has come in so no-one is going pay the stupidly generous draft prices any more. Plus they had the genius/luck to get Franklin and Clarkson. No-one else could replicate that.

Dogs got Bontempelli with one of their high picks - the others aren't worth much - so that's just one draft and there's never a guarantee of the jackpot like that. If there was, this one pick 4 would be enough.

Collingwood dipped that one year (2005) they got Pendlebury and Thomas. The flag team was as much about Ball and Jolly as that draft.

The other clubs who have tried to load up on talent have failed miserably to capitalise.

I'm not sure its a viable strategy. Reset is fine.

Simple...if we don't get the A-grade talent in Kelly, we go to the draft. Without getting the likes of a Martin or Kelly someone like Rockliff doesn't really serve a purpose on our list as he probably won't be around when we are contending again. Anyone over the age of 26 shouldn't really be targeted unless they are genenuiely elite.

Honestly if it comes to it put more money in front of Josh than he can say no to.
Exactly. Reminds me of when I visited The Pleasure Chest in Koh Samui when I was a grasshopper. I usually pay up front so that refusal is not an option, but the fine young lass behind the counter (God bless her sole), asks me, "Did you want to include ball-tracker for an extra $29?" She could see I was agog, and explained that they strap electrodes to your appendix so that your "ball-movement" can be tracked!!!! How could I say no? I couldn't. I didn't.
I gave her the $29 in cash and whinced in pain as I slammed it on the counter. She soon got it.

We just have to stay the course - aim high and not get B graders

Kelly is the one now - hopper can be the steak knives

Move on Waite , Gibbo, LT and spitta - Thommo another year primarily as back up

Pardon my french but when are people going to get it through their ****ing heads that these blokes are contracted?

Do you want to pay out and ditch club stalwarts so we can speculate on pick ****ing 76 and 94 in a pox draft?

It's stupid and its crass.

I too hope we stick to this aggressive reset.
I'm disappointed with the Martin situation. As I would've rather Martin and early pics then landing JK and giving the house. At least we kept RFC honest with their offer.

TBH I don't really care if JK comes or not. It will be what it will be and after the Dusty roller coaster I'm not gonna invest anymore into whether we get JK or not.

I just hope we look at getting some real gems in the trade period (like last year) that suit the age profile of 22-23 or younger, 24 Max. Recruiting stop gap older players to me make no sense as they will not be at their best when we are ready to push for a premiership tilt. NMFC will need to be very creative this trade period and again look out side the square (ala Ahern, Marley and the rat)

If we don't land JK then we have 2 quality picks to, fingers crossed get what we so desperately need. We can't afford to get these picks wrong.

I think we need to look at delisting Waite and Thompson, and seeking trades for LT and Goldy as these players do not suit our age profile req for this aggressive reset. We need all the draft Pics we can get.
If we are smart about it hopefully we can get some additional future draft pics for next year, to hopefully land all our future father sons and TT

As for all this money we have in TPP it's time to secure our young talent and front load the shit out of their contracts! So we have even more to keep going hard.

If we don't land a big fish this year, then go hard again next year. I can't help but wonder IF we fail to land a big fish again, then NMFC will have to look internally at its recruiting dept and improve.
