List Mgmt. Ahmed Saad and our need for small forwards

3 possessions 1 goal no thanks. A very poor mans Leon Davis. Not what we want in the big games.
Would be about as useful as my toe jam in a Granny.

(Mmmmm that come out kinda weird, even for me)

29 games over 2 seasons.

1.5 goal / 9 possession / 3 tackle per game forward....

on the fence.

not far off Garlett's stats (2/12/3.5), i'd prefer garlett.
^This. We could have taken Garlett in a trade for peanuts. Saad is a good set shot, but not a patch on Garlett as a crumber. Take out last season and Garlett's record is also much better, indicating a form slump rather than just general spudliness.

Pass.

Well guys, do we take a punt on Saad? Apparently we're interested in him. I'd say hes a reasonably low risk gamble.

Pros:
- 24 Years old ready made AFL footballer.
- Exceptional shot at goal.
- Has experience at the top flight.
- Small crumbing forward
- Elliot looks all but set to play midfield next season leaving a spot open for a small forward
- Tackling pressure was a highlight in the forward 50 when at the Saints

Cons:
- 4 other teams want him (Saints one of them)
- Had a tenacity to go missing in games
- Could he play in front of bigger crowds?
- Do we take another gamble
- How much will it take to get him at the Pies

Have a think about the number of players we've been linked to, and then not picked up.

Chances of us picking up Saad would therefore seem minimal.

Expect at 11:15am tomorrow for us all to be madly scrambling to find out about the no-names we've picked up.

But that's cool, by 5pm we'll have concluded that we've picked up the steals of the draft :P

I'm deeply concerned for you, that's twice you've agreed with THATSGOLD today :(
I know, i know but the Doc said I was ok. Best get a second opinion tomorrow.

I'd ask you but you know me too well & I fear your assessment might damage me forever.:p

Where are we at with Rookie spots?
Currently Gault, Frost and Cox (Cat B) are our listed rookies, and it was my understanding that there was an agreement with Armstrong that we will pick him up as a rookie as well.

If we have one or two more spots beyond that - I don't see why we wouldn't take a punt on Saad: 45 goals in 2 seasons (29 games), as long as he has kept himself fit and is mentally switched on and ready to return to top level footy. (and hopefully the time away has built up a burning desire and he comes back a better player)

With where our list is at the moment, I think we are better off going for a ready made footballer like Saad than going for a low rated youngster. Saad at worst is a good addition for the VFL side - but if needed for the AFL team at least we know what we are getting.
Look at what Armstrong did last year when brought in - he came in and was ready and servicable pretty much from the get go... I don't think an 18-19 yo taken as a low pick/rookie would've been able to do that.

What a steal Joe Blogs!

He has something that we don't have. He's a quick, small, crumbing forward, with a decent set shot (featuring the longest run up in the game).
We have Jamie, but he's more of a leading, jumping forward, then a ground level player.
Would cost us a pick in the PS draft (am I right?) So why not? I'd take Jeff Garlett first, but Saad would cost less.

You'd imagine after what he's been through in the last year or so, that he'd be mentally strong and itching for another chance.
Kennedy can produce those numbers and more in 2015.

I went to school with the kid and he played at the same Junior club as me. He's always had an unorthodox style, but it's effective. He's not Andrew Krakouer, but he's x-factor and he's forward pressure, something I feel that we lack.

I know it's not a popular opinion but i've always thought the position of "crumbing forward" was always a bit overrated and not necessarily needed, particularly in today's game. If you have a great one it's awesome, but I tend to think the flashiness and excitement of the players who usually play in the position often clouds their usefulness a bit. I'd always prefer to have midfielders with a few tricks rotate through there rather than a guy who is rendered inconsistent based mostly on the position. Instead of getting a Saad or the mooted Garlett i would much rather see Kennedy in the 22 each week playing forward with cameos through the middle.

We should have got Jeff Garlett.

Cheap and has a far better goal scoring record and crumbing ability. Saad lines up from FB to take a set shot.

I don’t Rate Garlett at all. He will do nothing at Dees.

Not a Team Player and only try’s when he can kick a goal and that is all

Given the Dees lack of goal scoring options he will kick 50+ next year then and be their best player.

Cant see why the Saints wouldnt give him a second chance with pick 1. I dont think we need to target small forwards specifically (apart from Saad who will be already taken).

Just pick the best available. Its a rookie list. You need to have a combination of depth and blue sky. Armstrong Frost and Gault are a pretty experienced rookie list. We dont need any more rookie depth....just go for a couple of kids who can play a bit. Or who cant play but might be able to learn!

I am with you on this. I'd much rather see our potential midfielders start as forwards and develop some goal smarts whilst perfecting their other skills and developing their motors. Having a dedicated small forward usually means having one of the most talented available - which we do not have (apart from Elliot).

Teams like Fremantle can play Ballantyne and Walters because both run through the middle and are exceptional link players with excellent defensive pressure. We don't have a player like that at this time so lets build our midfield into one of the most potent around goals.

For those playing at home:

Round 4 Selections:
54 - St Kilda - Adam Schneider
55 - GWS
56 - Brisbane - *Matt Hammelmann (Academy Selection)
57 - Western Bulldogs - Daniel Pearce
58 - Carlton
59 - Gold Coast
60 - Collingwood - Tony Armstrong

So for those that are saying no with no substance can you please elaborate a bit more, otherwise don't post...clearly people on this forum who don't watch a lot of footy and equally don't know much about the game.

Saad is exactly what we need to have a more versatile forward line and option to use Elliott in the midfield, the guy will give you at least 30 goal season.
