Interested if anyone has had a chance to see this guy play live? Going by the SANFL highlights this year, he seems to move very well, almost reminds me of Judd in his movements and style.

It is unlikely he will be upgraded this year but seems a good chance fr next year if he keeps improving, any chance he will break into Sturt side?

I saw him play a few weeks ago against North and he was very good, in fact he was best on ground. From what I've read in the paper this year he's been consistently in Sturt's best.

This is what I said about him after that game:

Aidan Riley in the Sturt reserves was excellent. He really looked comfortable at the level he was playing at and should find time in the seniors side soon IMO. He attacks the ball like Sloane yet his foot disposal is spot on. He's a really smart footballer and I could see just why we picked him up. He probably had around 20-25 possessions and should be named in Sturt's best.

Chatted to a mate of mine, who plays Sturt ressies, who reckon's Riley's been playing really well and really looks the goods. I must say I like what I see in the highlights, looks quicker than I thought he was(although that could just be the ressies comp), is tough, willing to take the opposition, finds the footy and skills look very solid. Will hopefully make his seniors debut soon.

Sounds promising. I think we might have room for at least one more rookie promotion. With two players out with knee reconstructions and three players out indefinitely. He would have to come under serious consideration for a promotion his good form continues, if our bad luck with injuries continues along with our poor form.

I don't mind him at all, he's definitely not one-paced and knows how to use it to his advantage. The worry I have for him (this year, not long-term) is that he tends to play fairly inside and simply doesn't have the body to back it up at the moment. He's still quite slight.

I don't think he'll be playing AFL this season (remember good ressies form doesn't mean much to the club, they'll want to see good league form before he even comes into consideration) but if he continues to improve as he has so far, he's got some tools that will help him make it at AFL level in future years.

yeah i was watching it last night and i was thinking to myself geez he can play a bit! then i realised he was playing 2's... even still was impressive looked strong, quick and smart- the quick hanballs to release players :thumbsu: could teach a few in the starting 22 something...

It's a big jump from BOG in a SANFL reserves game to making an AFL debut. Let's not get carried away just yet. I'd say that he's been a pleasant surprise for us, stepping up nicely from the weaker Sydney AFL competition, but he still has a long way to go before he's ready to play AFL footy.

As for elevating more rookies, I'm not sure that we really have that option. Otten, Martin and Moran have all been replaced already. That leaves Hentschel & Symes as "indefinite" injuries. Some posters on this board have stated that Symes is expected to start playing again (SANFL) in about a month. Hentschel's injury could keep him out anywhere between 4-12 weeks. Putting a player on the Long Term Injury list means that they're out for a minimum of 8 weeks - I'm not sure that either player necessarily qualifies.

Yeah, we might have to wait for 3 more guys to do knees this week :(

Knights may be a candidate if the injury ends up like Bocks and needs rest. But agree cant bring a reserves player up unless we have no one left.

It was about 3 weeks for Brodie Martin!

Riley has been one of the most encouraging things about this year!

Think you'll find Martin spent quite a bit more time than that in the seniors, being regularly in Sturt's bests at that level before getting his AFL debut.
Yes Martin did take awhile to make Sturts league team but did play quiete a few games before being picked for AFL.
If Riley was playing poorly in ressies maybe get a 2 year contract but maybe could contact Jacky for that photo he must have to ensure gets elevated.

That's what I meant. He spent a lot longer than 3 weeks playing in the SANFL seniors before being rewarded with his AFL debut.

Assuming Riley continues to play at his current level, it's highly likely that he will be retained on the rookie list in 2011. We already have 3 likely promotions to the senior list, I can't see him becoming the 4th - but neither do I see us letting him go entirely.

After round 11 clubs are allowed to elevate rookies without placing any player on the LTI list. I think that was a rule introduced by the AFL due to the gc coming in.

Correct.. but Martin is due back from injury not long after that (R14 is 12 months from his date of injury). Schmidt has to go back to the rookie list when Martin comes off the LTI list - so we'll probably keep this one up our sleeve to allow Schmidt to remain on the senior list for the whole year.

Is it just me or did he look super quick in the video posted by AFC? I like the look of him, but this is tempered by the fact that all our players look like stars in highlight packages...

Has gained speed since I saw him at the Champs last season, though watching ressies may be making a difference.

Completely agree .....thought he was a touch slow ...but the improvement he has shown on those highlight clips is extraordinary to say the least

He's taking the game on ......is using pace and his kicking skills seem very good

Good prospect IMO if he can continue that development

I must admit i have been really surprised how well Riley has gone this year. I honestly thought he looked like an average player but from what i have heard and seen he looks very quick, good skills, very good at stoppages and knows how to find the football. He has been named in the League squad for Sturt this weekend but i think he still might end up playing in the reserves

Still he is now coming onto supporters radar and expectations are starting to rise :thumbsu:

My impressions of him are based almost solely on what I saw at AFL Sydney level but his pace there looked very good. He's not someone who looks quick all the time but he has that wonderful ability to kick it up a gear in only a couple of steps and sidestep around a player.

How well this transfers to AFL level is very much in question, but at least he has the ability at all.
