Draft won't bring Power quick fix
By Chief Football Writer MICHELANGELO RUCCI
16oct02
PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams' demand for more players to improve his squad will have to be answered in next week's AFL trade period.
His recruiting manager, Alan Stewart, believes there is no quick fix in next month's AFL national draft.
And the draft will be more challenging for Stewart and the Power considering Port will have picks later than in any other draft since it joined the AFL in 1997 – 15, 31, 46, 62, 78 and 94 before any are traded away.
"For us to go that next step," Stewart said, "anyone we pick in the draft this year is not going to affect that.
"To expect a 17 or 18-year-old to come into the side and help us take that next step into the grand final or to win the flag is not how that process will take place."
"So any immediate effect on our progress next year will probably come from trading for an experienced player.
"What we really try to do with drafting the kids is look at our list progression and where we might be in two to five years' time. The lads we are looking to draft this year will have some role to play, but probably in two-three years' time."
Either this is a cunning ruse, or we're not trading for draft picks this year.
