Player Watch Alan Toovey (Retired 2016)

Got nothing to do with "letting go" and everything to do with respecting a player of limited skills who has been an over achiever throughout his career, a player who has likely saved more goals and even games than we could count, a player who is our most versatile and experienced defender.

If these kids pass him by then all power to them but I do find it a little grating that just because a few posters question his value it becomes okay to cast him aside for kids who haven't even established their credentials.

I'll leave the final say on his worth to the team to selectors. If/when they choose to demote then I'll happily dip my lid to you but currently I'd reckon his is one of the first magnets slapped on the board at selection meetings.

In the meantime a little less adoption of the "Richmond supporters eat their own" ethos at Collingwood wouldn't go astray.

Well said sir! I am looking forward to revisiting this thread after Tooves destroys Darling on Saturday.

for tooves to loss his spot the players most are saying have to take his spot
and till they can, barring injuries he will remain in the team for a long time yet

I think that most of us would agree Toovey isn’t an influential rebounding defender. He’s a shutdown defender and has the capability to play on tall or small. The questions surrounding his recent form and calls for him to be dropped are because small forwards in Walters, Cyril, Wingard even Monfries were able to have dominant games against us.

In particular Walters and Cyril, I don’t believe their strong influence to be Tooves fault, they both have some serious speed and agility, I simply think that we didn’t have the right matchups on the day. Ideally Sinclair or Ramsey would have been better suited. Wingard I think is better suited for Tooves, and he was beaten on the day, but he is a seriously good player.

He was playing on both of them at the same time?!

Commendable effort by the lad!

Bullshit and his disposal is garbage

Have to dissagree, he is barely beaten one on one, its just no help if he's going to zone off:confused:

I'll accept a spectrum, but as soon as anyone describes him as "rubbish", "a flog", "useless", "shit", or another variant - they're clueless in my books.

I'd describe him as hard working but very limited, not sure anyone thinks he's a flog.

I haven't thought he's been that bad this year and if anything is playing his best football since coming back from his knee. It's a bit strange reading how disappointed people are with his form, what are they expecting Toovs to play like?

Alan Toovey, 144 games and turns 29 next march. Not getting any younger or getting any better as a player. Has had a good crack at it in the afl with what he has ;)

You're entitled to your opinion.
Tooves is a great foot soldier.
One of our bravest ever.
When another player bests him in all area, no doubt he'll either make or get the call.
Till then stop he'll keep getting selected.
I doubt Buckley feels he needs our approval.

Stop what?

I'll bump this before somebody else does.

I've been a defender and supporter of the possum for a very long time, but he's never played a worse month of football than the last four weeks.

To be honest, not many players have ever played a worse month of football than Alan's last four.

Walters tore him to shreds.
Cyril tore him to shreds.
Wingard tore him to shreds.
A combination of LeCras and Sinclair tore him to shreds today.

His limitations by foot are well known, but they couldn't have really been worse in today's game. The highlight was the final quarter, with the pies still somehow only 12 points down. He surges forward under absolutely no pressure and hits the Eagles spare man lace out. The ball then rebounds the length of the ground to result in a goal to Toovey's man, LeCras.

You could honestly make an argument that he's cost us the game in every one of the last four weeks. He's been that bad in a string of close games that his omission may have legitimately turned four losses into four wins.

Terrible, terrible display over the last month. I sincerely hope he's made to find form in the VFL, because he's costing us games. A lot of games.

With the amount of quality inside 50s WC had didn't think Toovey was to bad, plenty that were much worse.

Good defender, but his kicking is at an under 12s level.
Just not good enough, can't kick can't play IMO
