Alastair Clarkson has just been named the new coach of reigning SANFL Premiers, Central Districts.

I know Clarkson the player but can anyone tell me what he has done in the way of coaching since his retirement??

Two proven successful coaches and also Johnny Platten were passed over for him so I expect he has some credentials.

It could be my imagination, but i heard that Alistair Clarkson had an assistant coaching job at St Kilda, but I don't know how good he is.

Alastair Clarkson was the runner for Melbourne in 1998, assistant to Tim Watson in 1999 & senior coach for Werribee in the VFL this season.

Hope that helps.

Hmm helps a bit.

The highly credentialed coaches he beat are said to be John Cahill, Stevie Wright and Ian Stewart so either he is very impressive or very cheap.

Servo,

He was not sacked from St Kilda at the end of 1999. He left off his own accord because he wanted to coach a team in his own right rather than the assistant coaching duties that included providng the video analysis on opposition players.

He coached Werribee in the VFL who are aligned with the Western Bulldogs so has coached some talented young bulldog players.

Probably the strange thing about him is his delivery to the players. He was renowned as a tagger that never shut up, in the same mould as Libba, yet he delivers his coaching addresses so quiet and calm.

He is good coaching material and should do well. (And I guess you will reming me if I am wrong next year

I hope he is a better coach than he was a player. He was the dirty gutless wonder who ran from 50 metres to hit Aitken from Carlton in 1987 in the game the called "The battle of Britain". It was an end of year exhibition game in London and he king hit Aitken from behind and broke his jaw. He had no idea it was coming. One of the lowest, most gutless acts I can remember seeing on a footy field, and thats coming from a North supporter. I certainly didn't cry when he left us and went to Melbourne. So I certainly wouldn't vouch for his character. At least Rhys Jones and the others were up front with their wild slugging in that game. Clarkson was a sniper.

So Clarkson learned the coaching caper from being an assistant to Tim Watson?
Nah when he left Tim Watson fell from 10 wins to 2 wins as a coach, made Watson seem respectable for a year, just another reason Clarko is the greatest coach of all time.

I love how simple and informative this thread is, what happened?

Strange career move. So who will be coaching the Hawks now?

I hope servo was satisfied with Clarko's tenure at Central Districts. Coached them to a flag in 2001 and runners-up in 2002 before leaving Central Districts to join Port Adelaide as midfield coach in 2003.
