Albert Fish (May 19, 1870 – January 16, 1936) is probably the most chilling crime story I've heard.

Born in Washington, D.C., his family had a history of mental illness. When his old man died, he was put into a child orphanage, which is where Fish's story gets perverse. He was regularly beaten by the other children at the house. He began to get a sadomasochistic thrill from the beatings.

This escalated. Soon, Fish's now infamous obsessions began to gain some traction. He began eating and drinking urine, sticking needles into his groin, writing gratuitous letters to random New York women.

In 1924, Fish would kill Grace Budd. Six years later, he wrote this letter to the parents of Budd, detailing the death of the child.

Dear Mrs. Budd. In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deck hand on the Steamer Tacoma, Capt. John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong, China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone. At that time there was famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1–3 per pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak—chops—or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girl's behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price. John staid there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys, one 7 and one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet. Then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them – tortured them – to make their meat good and tender. First he killed the 11 year old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten except the head—bones and guts. He was roasted in the oven (all of his ass), boiled, broiled, fried and stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time, I was living at 409 E 100 St. near—right side. He told me so often how good human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday June the 3, 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese—strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her. On the pretense of taking her to a party. You said yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wildflowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them. When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down the stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mamma. First I stripped her naked. How she did kick – bite and scratch. I choked her to death, then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms. Cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me 9 days to eat her entire body. I did not * her tho I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.

In 1927, a year after Budd's death, Albert Fish claimed a life in a similar way. A four-year old boy, Billy Gaffney, was killed and his parents' sent a letter summating his final hours.

I brought him to the Riker Ave. dumps. There is a house that stands alone, not far from where I took him ... I took the boy there. Stripped him naked and tied his hands and feet and gagged him with a piece of dirty rag I picked out of the dump. Then I burned his clothes. Threw his shoes in the dump. Then I walked back and took trolley to 59 St. at 2 A.M. and walked from there home. Next day about 2 P.M., I took tools, a good heavy cat-of-nine tails. Home made. Short handle. Cut one of my belts in half, slit these half in six strips about 8 in. long. I whipped his bare behind till the blood ran from his legs. I cut off his ears – nose – slit his mouth from ear to ear. Gouged out his eyes. He was dead then. I stuck the knife in his belly and held my mouth to his body and drank his blood. I picked up four old potato sacks and gathered a pile of stones. Then I cut him up. I had a grip with me. I put his nose, ears and a few slices of his belly in the grip. Then I cut him thru the middle of his body. Just below his belly button. Then thru his legs about 2 in. below his behind. I put this in my grip with a lot of paper. I cut off the head – feet – arms – hands and the legs below the knee. This I put in sacks weighed with stones, tied the ends and threw them into the pools of slimy water you will see all along the road going to North Beach. Water is 3 to 4 ft. deep. They sank at once. I came home with my meat. I had the front of his body I liked best. His monkey and pee wees and a nice little fat behind to roast in the oven and eat. I made a stew out of his ears – nose – pieces of his face and belly. I put onions, carrots, turnips, celery, salt and pepper. It was good. Then I split the cheeks of his behind open, cut off his monkey and pee wees and washed them first. I put strips of bacon on each cheek of his behind and put in the oven. Then I picked 4 onions and when meat had roasted about 1/4 hr., I poured about a pint of water over it for gravy and put in the onions. At frequent intervals I basted his behind with a wooden spoon. So the meat would be nice and juicy. In about 2 hr., it was nice and brown, cooked thru. I never ate any roast turkey that tasted half as good as his sweet fat little behind did. I ate every bit of the meat in about four days. His little monkey was as sweet as a nut, but his pee-wees I could not chew. Threw them in the toilet.

Only four victims were ever confirmed. However, there's reasonable belief that Fish's actually number of victims was much higher.

When Fish was executed via electric chair (or as he dubbed it, "the supreme thrill of my life"), it's rumoured that he prompted a short circuiting. This was, so they say, due to the amount of pins and metal in his groin.

His whole story is more insane. I'd recommend the Wiki page.

Agree grizz. I had to stop shortly after starting the 2nd letter.

I read about him years ago. There's a horrible transcript from a detective on the case. He's a seriously sick individual.

Reading about people like this is very saddening. Makes you think about how atrocious life and nature can be. Like, looking at the African wild, how animals prey on other animals. Life is so barbaric and ruthless at heart, when you cut away the sophistication of culture, art, civilization, etc.

What's also saddening is how children for a long time have been fair game...sexually, labor, whatever. Parents selling kids outright, parents selling time with their kids for money to get by, children abandoned having to work to get by, or being bailed out by kind adults who get out of them sexual favor in the bargain.

Im old enough to know what it was like being a kid in older times, and old enough to know from people who were far older than me, stories when they were kids during even older times.

Children had been looked at as a 'delicacy', or a commodity, by adults (sexual, whatever), especially the well-to-do or in position of authority. It was a rite of passage in becoming an adult that in your childhood are many skeletons.

Are you implying that sexual abuse was the norm?

I haven't actually read or checked up on Albert Fish for about 18 months, which was when I first discovered him. Re-reading those letters were just barbaric. I reckon you've touched on something, GG. This board has highlighted people and stories who essentially show we are all animals. Beneath the layer of sophistication and technology is nothing but raw instinct. Like all species, there are runts.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but there's a whole world of research and cases out there specifically about crimes against children, like organized, sponsored ones. The whole missing children thing.

Sexual abuse was certainly the norm, and the further back in time you go the more prevailing, socially acceptable, or unspokenly understood, and children just took it as a facet of growing up.

Even a decade ago it was rife. It's only starting to come out more now, still around now. Imagine what it was like every decade going back.

I remember in my childhood adults speaking of us as commodities and delicacies, and seeing first hand many things. Family members, neighbors, school teachers, etc. You're like a target with a big flashing arrow pointing at you. Men and women salivating at you, normal people, family, parents of friends, older brothers and sisters of friends, etc. All of them getting their way with you, and your friends, and other children you know. Everyone was preying on the younger.

And that was just in every regular suburb in every town. There were many cases, famous and hidden, in the past of paedophilia networks and other debaucheries, like snuff films and sadism, engaged in by govts and powers-that-be. They were like normal people in every regular suburb, except they had the power and money to take their fantasies to the nth degrees and not face any repercussions.

Teachers, coaches, parents or parents of friends, uncles, aunts...they were like the next level down, the suburban versions of powers-that-be. Older siblings and older siblings of friends...they were like the next level down from that of powers-that-be.

This board has highlighted people and stories who essentially show we are all animals.

Which is also why a case like DB Cooper is the most popular topic on this board. A victimless crime, one of daring and good-naturedness, someone beating the odds, the dragnet. Those kinds of crimes, thefts and money heists, are always looked upon as heroic and cool. There are a lot of terrible crimes otherwise which just sadden you and your perception of the world and beingness.

Just read that wiki, this was particularly frightening to read:

At a meeting with reporters after the execution, Fish's lawyer, James Dempsey, revealed that he was in possession of his now deceased client's "final statement". This amounted to several pages of hand-written notes that Fish had apparently penned in the hours just prior to his death. When pressed by the assembled journalists to reveal the document's contents, Dempsey refused, stating:[17]

I will never show it to anyone. It was the most filthy string of obscenities that I have ever read.

That's the problem with a guy like him (who is extremely rate mind you, and I can't recall a case like it since), nothing that another human can physically or mentally do to him would affect him at all. There is no justice.
Many of these people have no human emotion, so no matter what the punishment you hand out, it would never be a penalty to them, I guess you could always feed him a veterinarian diet.

Dagnabbit all these modern contraptions and their fancy touch mcbobs.

Albert did seem to have genuine caring qualities at some point, even after his wife left him for another man and return back still together, he still gave her a place to stay."He told her she could return to the family, but Straube had to depart. Mrs. Fish ordered her lover to leave.". Still cared and raised his children.. despite asking them to paddle his arse with a paddle studded with inch-and-a-half nails. Somewhat slow progression into madness "He ran around at night naked and howled at the moon, I'M CHRIST I'M CHRIST " One of the more interesting cases of past events constructing someone's future behavior.

An inch and a half nails?!? FFS.

Should've tied him to a tree and set wolves into him, Sin City style.
