News Alberton Oval Redevelopment

The redvelopment of the eastern side and pulling down part of the player facility, starts this week. Not sure why it couldn't be delayed a week so it starts after the AFLW game v North on Saturday. May have all been locked in before the AFL announced the draw for Season 7 and the club planned for when it appeared the season would start in December or January.

PORT ADELAIDE’s AFLW home ground Alberton Oval will have a reduced capacity limit for the Power’s Round 8 clash against North Melbourne.

Due to the redevelopment of the club’s training facilities, capacity for Saturday’s clash will be 3,500. As a result, the Scott Hodges End (South), Eastern Concourse, Geof Motley Gate and grassed car park on Seventh Avenue will be unavailable.

The Williams Family Stand, Bob Quinn Grandstand, Northern concourse, Western concourse, and the Bowling Club will all be available as normal.

Port Adelaide AFLW members are strongly encouraged to redeem their ticket as soon as possible to guarantee their entry to the game. Tickets are also available to purchase online, which fans are encouraged to do so early to avoid disappointment.

Alberton Oval has been home to the Port Adelaide Football Club since 1880 ... and while it is getting a new look, the old ways of the Port Adelaide supporters remain.

May be the same spiritual home but the Port Adelaide ethos that made us great is all but gone with the current regime.
Yeah and the fact they write this drivell..... Wow, the mildly average Darren Crocker said something...isn't that great! speaks volumes for the empty shell we have become

Whilst I can stand Rooch's convoluted writing style, this article is spot on

It doesn't matter who's running the club, Big Bob or the no-hopers we currently have, Alberton is our heart and home will remain so forever

It's something to be feared by all opponents and loved by all of the faithful

The recent and upcoming improvements will only enhance that

Good stuff

What is the estimated time for the completion of redevelopment?

From RussellEbertHandball post on previous page via Matthew Richardson letter to members

Importantly, we are working to an 11–12-month construction timeline, so the disruption to football is limited to only one season. Importantly, the new facilities in the Williams Stand will be football’s home from November as we all vacate the ASHQ building.

We’re hoping the admin and new coaching and football facilities will be complete by April 2023. By the time the next AFLW season starts, this stage of the re-development should be complete, and we will finally see our exciting vision for the Alberton Oval precinct brought to life.

People will be all over the place between November and April. Above post says where the players and coaches will be based.

The admin staff will be squeezed into free areas in the Quinn stand and Williams stand. The down stairs sports bar a couple of walls have been put up and most of the area taken up will be admin staff walking behind those walls and the bar area left is very small. The Bob McLean Room upstairs next to the Precinct, will become offices. Some staff will be working from home like during the covid period.

Even though most of the ASHQ building, the original part built in 1999, wont be touched, health and safety occupation rules mean that staff aren't allowed to work there whilst the facilities building built in 2009-10 is being torn down. There will be small upgrade to carpet and electrical/computer wiring, but 20-30 years ago the laws would have meant most of the admin staff would have stayed working at their desk/area.

Wait, so is there no Maggies games at Alberton next season?

There is no reason to not have games. Most of the Power players current area - ie lockers etc is in part of the original ASHQ area. The big indoor facility was added in 2010. Most of the ASHQ wont be touched so given they expect that part will be finished by April there shouldn't be a problem with hosting games.

The Magpies will permanently be based on the eastern side, they had to move over early 2022 season. The AFL said the AFLW oppo change rooms had to be upgraded to Cert III standard, so that's what the SANFL oppo will use and the old Magpies area which was upgraded for the W program, will be shared by the Power and Magpies players until April. There wont be much crossover between Power and Magpies contract players for training so it wont be a tight squeeze for training purposes.

  • Quiet a few people will be working from one long portable hut, not lots of individual ATCO huts like 1996-98.
That was scrapped because of the cost, over $100k, and as I wrote in post #1,212 the staff have been moved into various areas of the Quinn stand and Williams stand.

Sad to see the end of cold showers and limited facilities for opposition players 😥

From the article

The remainder of the headquarters will be upgraded to include a new pool and change rooms, as well as a bigger gym. Port Adelaide is also improving its lights so it can host AFLW night matches from 2023. The redevelopment is expected to be completed in August next year so it will be ready for the next women’s season.

If there are going to be AFLW night games, the lights will have to be bright enough for TV broadcast, so that means the club will push for SANFL games there. Might not be 2023, but surely from 2024 one or two Friday night games and two or three Saturday night games a year will be on the cards.

Richardson said the Power had been looking at upgrading Alberton, the club’s home since 1880, for several years before finalising plans during Covid. Funding included $15m from the federal government, $3m from the office of recreation and sport, close to $5m from the AFL, plus the club and its benefactors raised nearly $5m.

I didn't realise the SA government gave the club 2 lots of $1.5mil. So I looked them up.

May 2021 first $1.5m as part of the state budget

Port Adelaide welcomes today’s $1.5 million funding announcement from the Office for Recreation and Sport as part of the club’s Alberton Oval precinct redevelopment. The funding will underpin the first phase of the $3.495 million upgrade of the changerooms and facilities under the Williams Family Stand to accommodate Port Adelaide’s AFLW programs...........

Then another $1.5m in 2022 in lead up to this year's state election

The Port Adelaide Football Club has welcomed today’s announcement from the State Government and the Office for Recreation and Sport of a further $1.5 million in funding towards the Alberton Oval precinct redevelopment. The grant takes the State Government contribution to the redevelopment to $3 million, after a previous funding announcement last May.

The funding will contribute towards the upgrade of the changerooms and facilities under the Fos Williams Family Stand to accommodate Port Adelaide’s AFLW programs, two indoor community basketball courts as part of the club’s soon to be redeveloped high performance centre and also the expanded training pitch on the eastern side of Alberton Oval, which will also be used for junior sport and passive recreation.

As the Power’s training and administrative headquarters gets upgraded, the men’s team will use the women’s hub in the Fos Williams Family Stand over summer. Administration staff are working downstairs in the social club until April, while the football department will be in new AFL-compliant coaches and media boxes.

I forgot all those new coaches boxes and media boxes in the Williams stand will also be used by the footy staff during the week.

Port Adelaide’s vision for behind the northern goals, connecting its headquarters to the Bob Quinn Stand, is to establish a “legends walk”, which may include statues honouring club greats with updated pavers pledged by supporters.

There will be demand for a lot of statutes but decent life sized ones cost over $100k, probably closer to $200k. Its why I put up some details earlier in this thread and in the Brynn Teakle thread about the pub in Northampton WA, about 50kms north of Geraldton, in late 2021 unveiled its metal figurines of the 9 local lads from their town of 900, who have played in the AFL since 1987, and have said to the club they should look at doing something similar to acknowledge many of our past greats.

I saw Brynn on the deck of the Precinct when the club hosted the opening Maggies game of the new pub against Glenelg in late June, and asked if the Northampton pub had rung him up to confirm they were going to make one of him after he debuted against Sydney.

He laughed, but said he was looking forward to one day going up there to unveil his metal figurine and its a great gesture by the pub. I asked him if his cousin Julia played a game for our AFLW team if she would get a metal figurine as well? He said he didn't know but it would only be fair for her to get one as well.

Last night I looked again at the development plans Hames Sharley lodged with the PAE Council last year and I downloaded back then.

For basketball court area it says

so physical size, there isnt much of an upgrade?
What do you mean by much?

At ground level a 58% increase in the footprint / surface area taken up by buildings. Decent increase in asphalt parking area and of course the soccer pitch. There has been a big increase in height of the total buildings.

Oval surface looks a bit beat up. It was like a billiard table for the AFLW games.

That was my first impression, but they have just done the standard spread sand all over the surface to level it out. After a couple of good watering sessions, it will look as great as 2 weeks ago.
