I've been blown away by the new Stones album Blue and Lonesome. It's a perfect tribute to the blues music that they love. The Jaggernaut is in rare form on this and Keith and Ronnie sound great. Perfect Christmas gift from these legends.

Agreed, it's just come out so late in the year, it needs a bit of time, but a mighty fine blues/rootsy record by the stones. Sounds damn good. Should still be considered for end of year lists.

I probably have a fair bit I have to go back and listen/re-listen to, so it is still quite generic, but:

I still don't really know why, but for whatever reason I just could not get into Goodness. Home Like NoPlace is There is one of my favourite albums, but Goodness didn't really do anything for me. I'll probably give it another chance at some stage and hopefully it clicks then.

It really clicked for me on first listen, and I listened to it about 5 times the weekend it came out. Seemed to really resonate with me at the time. It was comfortably my favourite album of the year and Piano Player was comfortably my favourite song of the year for some time.

Neither have the same effect on me anymore, and were it not for my initial enjoyment, they would both probably be further down their respective lists. Still like both a lot though.

Agreed in regards to HLNPIT though. 2014 produced 3 albums that are among my all-time favourite albums. HLNPIT, Throw Me in the River and The War on Drugs' album Lost In the Dream.

  1. Colouring Book - Chance
  2. Blonde - Frank Ocean
  3. Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown
  4. Yes Lawd! - NxWorries

  6. Black America Again - Common
  7. The Life of Pablo - Kanye West
  8. Awaken, My Love - Childish Gambino
  9. The Sun's Tirade - Isaiah Rashad
  10. Views - Drake

Real 10. Malibu - Anderson .Paak

I didn't really get around to listening to all the albums I wanted to this year. Played it fairly safe and didn't do as much musical exploring as I have the last few years. Hopefully I can catch up on some more of the acclaimed stuff over the summer. Metronomy my #1 for 2016. Very underrated and a great return to the wonky electronic sounds of Nights Out. I didn't really like TLOP compared to every other Kanye release but given I probably listened to it more than any other album – particularly in that weird release phase – I had to include it.

Ball Park: ultra consistent, great live act, big fan of all four albums of theirs. First Drones record I've listened to, purely on the back of "Taman Shud", it was excellent. Frank is, well, Frank. Just hate the exclusive release stuff. Still haven't listened to Endless because it isn't on Spotify (in fact that's the same as Lemonade for me as well – torrents don't seem to be in vogue as much these days but I'm buggered if I'm paying for more than one streaming service a month. Exclusives suck). Kaytranada's record is an amazing debut, flows perfectly, "Glowed Up" my song of the year. Last Shadow Puppets surprised me as I thought it was gonna be pretty average. Not a lot changed from the debut but I still like it as it's done well.

Saw Radiohead live for the first time this year and was blown away. They even played "Creep" and as much as I dislike the song compared to all their other stuff it was still cool to sing along to it with a giant crowd. "Present Tense" was my highlight from the album. RUFUS again consistent and I think bettered their first record. It's nothing groundbreaking but they are good at their craft and are really beginning to get the mainstream recognition they deserve. Finally Whitney is the breakout band of the year for mine and I'll associate many a train ride across Europe this year listening to tracks like "Golden Days" and "No Woman". Good stuff.

Ball Park Music – Every Night The Same Dream
The Drones – Feelin Kinda Free
Frank Ocean – Blonde
Kanye West – The Life of Pablo
Kaytranada – 99.9%
The Last Shadow Puppets – Everything You’ve Come To Expect
Metronomy – Summer 08
Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool
RÜFÜS – Bloom
Whitney – Light Upon The Lake

Another question: how did Lil Yachty become a thing? He has no flow at all, he can't sing at all, he brings absolutely nothing to the table and flat out ruins a lot of songs that he shows up on, yet he seemed to have spent 2016 constantly getting pretty impressive guest spots. Is it supposed to be a joke? I don't get it.

But then I don't understand how so many fledgling rappers in this post-Future world seem to be gaining attention despite not being able to, you know, actually rap, so maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy old man.

Mine is made up mostly of artists I had never listened to before. Really enjoyed a lot of new music this year.

Albums:

1. Beyoncé - Lemonade
2. Solange - A Seat At The Table
3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
4. J. Cole - 4 Your Eyez Only
5. Ngaiire - Blastoma
6. Tunji Ige - Missed Calls
7. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
8. A.B Original - Reclaim Australia
9. Tkay Maidza - TKAY
10. Beaty Heart - Till The Tomb
11. Dorothy - ROCKISDEAD
12. Sebastian Kole - SOUP
13. Tove Lo - Lady Wood
14. Ladyhawke - Wild Things
15. Troi Irons - Turbulence

I genuinely thought this year was s**t. Just because lots of big acts dropped new albums, that doesn't mean the albums were any good. As I alluded to earlier, I thought most follow-ups were really bogged down and lacking in ambition and celebrated for being safe, obvious 'advancements.'

I'm a massive Radiohead defender but even A Moon Shaped Pool wasn't what I hoped it would be. It is a bit of a hodgepodge and The Present Tense sounds half-made, Identikit's best feature was kicked to the turf, and stuff like Ful Stop just seemed out of place. I don't know... unfortunately it's never in my top three, and on a cynical day it can be surpassed by Hail to the Thief.

I'm yet to hear the Solange album, but it seems it was made #1 by Pitchfork for the sake of having something bold and unique. That site is full of w***ers and concepts, but there's still a degree of decency in a lot of their lists. It really went to the pits this year simply because music is so dull in 2016. This is the era of meandering, single-hooks, limited melody, and beige instrumentation.

I think it was a pretty good year despite the lack of big name acts dropping albums (disclaimer, I'm no fan of Drake, Kanye, Frank Ocean etc). Lesser lights like Glass Animals, Jinja Safari, Gang of Youths, Car Seat Headrest, Jezabels etc all had stellar albums. I was hoping for an Arcade Fire or Haim album, but neither made it by the end of the year.

^^^ I'm genuinely curious as to who you consider to be a 'big name' if you're of the opinion that 2016 was lacking in releases from them.

Radiohead, Bowie, A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye, Beyonce, Frank Ocean, Drake, Chance, Kendrick, Avalanches, Bon Iver, James Blake, The Strokes, Nick Cave, Flume, Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Kings of Leon....

It felt we had nothing but big name releases, across pretty much every genre, this year.

Of those, Radiohead, Chilli Peppers, Metallica are genuinely big names, as are Kanye, Kendrick and Drake (though as I pointed out, I don't care for their music, so their releases mean nothing to me). Bowie was long past his prime and without his death, the release would have only been for aficionados. Avalanches, Bon Iver, A Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave, Flume aren't genuinely big names outside their genre/fanbase), Kings of Leon and Strokes are almost nostalgia acts at this point. Beyonce and Rihanna are pop stars, I have no more interest in their releases than I do One Direction.

Maybe it's just that few big name acts that match my tastes released albums this year. And that there are fewer genuinely big name acts worldwide as music splinters.

Very nice. Surprised to see it in amongst a list like this. Couldn't quite squeeze Kodama into top album list?

I thought 2016 was a great year for new music. Part of it is probably because the last few years every second album has been EDM or at least with EDM influences and this year there were a lot of people putting out different stuff and actually writing songs with meaning.

It's also the first year I've really used any streaming service which meant I listened to way more different artists than I normally would. I heard a lot of absolute sh*t but heaps of awesome stuff too. I even listened to artists I normally roll my eyes at and some of it was heaps better than I expected it to be.

Rnb & hip hop seem to be becoming the main "popular" genres again too.

I admit I have to re-listen to Kodama. It didn't really click for me on first listen and I have intended to re-listen to it, but have just never gotten around to it.

It certainly had great potential, and I really like a few songs from it. Obviously "Oiseaux de Proie" and also "Kodama" and "Je suis d'ailleurs" but the album just didn't click as a whole for me.

I won't bother listing with numbers, but the ablums i really enjoyed that came out this year are:

Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
Bones - Useless
Chance The Rapper - Colouring Book
Clipping - Splendor & Misery
Clipping - Wriggle (EP)
