Okay..... so how do you feel about alcoholist then?

Not a word I use. Not a concept I need to embrace. I have this bloody annoying habit of treating people as individuals, rather than as somebody else's interpretation of a set of so-called symptoms.

I was kidding mate. Your outlook/perception would appear to be a healthy and fair interpretation of peoples.:thumbsu:

do you think it would be more pc to say 'there goes a person with alcoholic tendencies?'

Why would you think "PC" would be a consideration. Did you read what I wrote, especially the last bit?

Bravo! Good for you.

PS Sounds like a load of bollocks, but to each their own.

Oops. Sorry. The views I expressed tend not to be readily accepted among people of certain almost religious persuasions. I reacted rather badly in your case. I'm one of those people who thinks that IRONY is something done by drycleaners.

You're immeasurably more civil than I. Don't bandy it about though. There are a lot of people who are.

Nicky has spoken!

I think the symptoms given before by nicky are as close as possible

Can you have 3 drinks and stop?

Do you look forward to when you have your first drink ?

Do you plan your life around drinking?

anyone who feels they need to drink in social situations has an acohol problem
I disagree with this one though. Drinking in social situations is more of a cultural issue and not one of alcoholism. The person may feel they need to drink to be ''part of the crowd''

I wouldn't say anyone who feels a need to drink in social situations when people are drinking around them is an alcoholic; but I would say that someone who can't decide not to have a drink because others around them are drinking is.

Basically, I'd be what's described as a light social drinker. I almost never drink at home (although I do have alcohol in the house), and certainly never when there aren't others around drinking. When among a crowd of people drinking, I usually feel like joining them. However, I'm capable of making the decision not to. An inability to make that decision is an early sign of alcoholism.

IMO though, the clearest sign of alcoholism is an inability to stop drinking once you start. If, once you've had a drink you need to get blotto, then you're an alcoholic no matter how often you drink.

So you never kick back with a beer or a bourbon or whatever at the end of a crappy day. Never?

Thanks Dr Prude. I must be an alcoholist.

On my own? No. Somehow, I manage to destress without recourse to alcohol. If you feel that you need alcohol to destress, then you probably have a mild addiction, that would make you an alcoholic.

Mind you, there are levels of alcoholic; for most people its an addiction completely under control. For others though, it escapes their management and they can completely fall apart.

You sound like a real fun guy!

Just jesting. Mate, I don't have a problem with having a beer on my own. I'm not scared of the evil grog.

Thanks for the suggestion Moo, but as I'm sure you're aware, I'd rather gnaw off my own arms.

(btw Milo, I should add, I don't have any problem with people that drink; as I said, I do drink, just not as much as most people that do. I made a choice that suits me, others are free to make the choice that suits them. As long as they keep their drinking from controlling them, then in my eyes there's nothing wrong with it. But it is a form of alcoholism in that it points to an addiction)

Exactly my take on it Q ...I have played a lot of teams sports and have been around people drinking socially and sometimes i will have a drink or two and sometimes i just can't be bothered ...I never drink alone and don't feel the need to drink to destress.
I think a lot of drinkers are kinda like smokers ..if your not with them then you are to be shunned because they feel a little guilty being a slave to something that you can take or leave . see Milo
