Mcpharlin at full fitness is better but he's not & lets face it never will be again. So Silvanni has to be the best option. We can't carry suspect players into games anymore it puts too much pressure on the rest of the team.
Yeah, I don't think we can risk playing McPharlin back into form through the finals. He's not match fit, out of touch and down on confidence. If he can come back through the WAFL and dominate in time for the GF, then by all means, bring him in, but I hope SCNOS is the incumbent now.

Two things that I keep reminding myself about regarding Silvagni. Firstly he's played predominantly with the WAFL this year and yesterday it appeared that he was very conscious of the increased pressure hence the somewhat hurried kicks, making sure he wasn't caught with the ball.
In a couple more games this aspect will improve dramatically I"m sure.

Secondly, didn't he have a tremendous game against Buddy a couple of years ago. Beat him pointless if I remember correctly.

With all this I"m quite comfortable with him in the side.
He's not the first and won't be the last defender to get toweled up by Buddy. Couldn't agree more on the perceived pressure/hurried kicks righting itself over the next couple of games.

He beat Buddy.....Kept him completely out of the game.

The worry I have with Silva is that he gets a bit excited when he's back in the team and loses a bit of control ending up giving away free after free after free.... Adelaide final 2012 anyone?

But this week he was great...I think he just needs a bit of time to settle into the role and not have to go overboard to prove himself.

Yes you are right. He played a mature game on the weekend. At times in the past he has looked a bit too keen to try and be the dominant silverback. Better just to get the job done.

Maybe if he had a consistent run of games he wouldn't be so excited?

Hawthorn 95 defeated Fremantle 44

In torrential rain Hawthorn put on an awesome display of wet weather footy to trounce Fremantle by 52 points to remain in third position on the ladder. With wet weather predicted many football scribes had them thinking this would suit the Dockers, but by my reckoning it better suited Hawthorn who had tougher bodies around the contests and in the slippery conditions would slow the pace of the game as well as the speed of the Dockers who play a fast type brand of running attacking footy on the big ground at Paterson’s Stadium and this was proved it to be correct. Hawthorn who controlled the ball better in the wet, and were more direct, kicked the first eight goals of the match and held Fremantle goalless in the first and third quarters despite the Dockers winning the clearances 51-32 as well as contested possession count 174-162.

Hawthorn won the inside 50 count 61-34 and had no trouble scoring despite star forward Buddy Franklin being held goalless by Alex Silvagni for the first time since rd three last year ending a 33 game streak. Silvagni who has only conceded one goal in the last four matches may have given other clubs a clue how to play against Franklin and restrict him by playing in front of the star forward blocking his space to lead to the ball as well as causing him to attempt marking over his head, not a great strength of his in contests at any time but made even harder caused by wet conditions.

Just dug this up out of the archives. Alex is Buddys arch nemesis.

He played well on Sargeant Schulz when we played Port earlier this year, another performance like that next week will be helpful

Silvagni is a great player. Considering he only plays a handful of games for us each year he always comes in & gives 100% and would be a starter in most backlines. It's a hard choice if McPharlin is actually 100% healthy though because McPharlin is just so amazing when he is playing his best. It's nothing against Silva, it's just Luke is such a damn good player.

His ability to compete against much bigger opposition is amazing, similar to Gibson but perhaps without a bit of the class going the other way. Just goes to show what a bit of self confidence can do.

As much as we all love McPharlin, Silvagni has to stay in.
Great player.

Pieces for the future finally falling into place.

Silvagni for McPharlin; A Pearce for Johnson; Tabs/Apeness for Pav; Griffin/Clarke for Sandilands; the Energiser Bunny for Ballas.

Silvagnis a great player but it wouldnt feel right if we were to win a premiership and Luke didnt go down as a premiership player.
Silvagni should get the nod, but I wouldn't be HAPPY about it.

If anything in my opinion, Luke should retire now, he's a liability in my opinion.
I hate to say it but we wont win a GF with McPharlin in the team.
