Will FTA TV run the other films. They often do

I noted that JB Hi-Fi were selling blu-rays of the Alien series next to the POS counter when I picked up my copy of AFL Evolution last Friday.

So, I just saw the movie, and my first impressions are a bit mixed.

If anyone is thinking if this will answer any questions Prometheus asked, you will most likely be let down. The gore and horror aspect should satisfy Alien fans, but those searching for the deeper meaning and story arc of the previous installment might be a bit irritated, as I was.

Ridley Scott has since said that the negative fan reaction to Prometheus is what spurred him to focus less on continuing that story, and return back to the familiar franchise.

I'd give it a 6.5/10. I enjoyed the tension, I just found myself wanting the answers rather than caring that much about the Alien which we've seen many times before.

The fate of Elizabeth Shaw pissed me off. It felt like she was tossed aside and disposed of as a symbol of the abandonment of the original story. Despite being the major lead of the previous, just so non-nonchalantly killed off screen like a random extra didn't feel right. Put it this way - it felt like her character arc still had lots to offer. She, like us the viewers, were searching for answers and that was all suddenly pulled out from under her. This is one thing that really annoys me about some movies, they kill off major characters without any meaningful sacrifice or gravity behind it. Also, given the prologue's that were released online it seems unclear exactly how she died. David admits it wasn't in the crash, but this isn't expanded on - I suppose he strangled her or something but given how much he apparently loved her this seems odd. My theory is that he loved her so much he wanted to "perfect" her and save her from death, and in the process experimented on her and killed her? I get that this is an Alien movie and there are no happy endings, but Shaw was an interesting character and they wasted her imo.

Why the engineers wanted us dead. This was never addressed. They become and afterthought

What happened to Walter? He stayed behind to continue David's work after letting him go? Now that David is going to infect the pods with facehuggers, that sets up the next movie, so will Daniels and Tennessee survive? Don't see how since he has them in cryo. And is David now officially the creator of the original Xenomorph species?

The last we saw of the two androids together was David reaching for a knife on the ground, so he must have 'killed' Walter.

What really annoyed me was that Daniels didn't see it necessary to 'test' David/Walter to see if it was really Walter. Would have been as easy as asking him a personal question.

Seems that David can lay claim to creating the Xenomorphs, yes.

Daniels and Tennessee are so dead it isn't funny. Which makes me sad as I liked them both.

I liked the movie, Danny McBride was really good which was a pleasant surprise.

It was weird how the Neomorph and baby xeno both seemed to be 'tamed' and under David's control and they imitated him....I don't remember any Synthetics being able to manipulate them in such a way in previous films.

It's looking like that's their fate. These flicks have a nasty habit of killing off their major, likebale characters off-screen.

I watched Resurrection recently and the weird alien at the end of that one was loyal to Sigourney because I guess she was his mother. I wonder if these aliens see/sense David as their creator and thus are unwilling to harm him.

Yeah, they shared some genetic similarities. She had some extra sensory abilities of the aliens too. I suppose they must see David that way, even if he doesn't share any genetic material. He sounded genuinely enraged and heartbroken when that captain shot and killed the Neomorph in front of him.

All the characters are underdeveloped so when they start getting killed you don't really feel much for them.
Yeah the main issue I had with the film was that there were too many characters. The only ones I really cared about were Daniels and Tennessee.

Would have been better if they'd cut a few and developed a couple more. The second captain and the androids were good too I suppose.

I will say those two characters were fine but could have done with more backstory.

James Franco's inclusion was bizarre. It's like hiring Taylor Swift to work the bar at a wedding - complete waste of a name actor.

My missus and I are convinced Franco being in the movie was just an in-joke with McBride. No issue with it.

Sadly, about what I expected. Will wait for blu-ray.

Ridley's approach kind of pisses me off. Yeah reaction to Prometheus was bad, but it was because the plot was so badly mishandled. Story could have been epic.

comments:

I thought that David conducted an experiment on Elizabeth. It seemed one of the pictures that Walter was looking through showed Elizabeth with something around he neck and going in to her mouth (like a facehugger tentacle).

Though this would have had to have happened prior to the ship coming to that planet, given it was only David on the ship looking down at the people as they turned to stone, or whatever it was.

As for her just being killed-off off screen, this franchise has a history of that. If I remember correctly the male hero of Alien was dead in the cryo-pod at the start of Aliens.

As for Walter - he either came around to David's way of thinking and has stayed there, for whatever reason. Or more likely he copped the knife in his neck as he pondered David's proposal.
