Formal contact as in "take me to your leader", with Klaatu keeping the engine running in case the natives got a bit rowdy? Nah...

Anal probing, dismembered cows, compulsion to build mountains out of mashed spuds, and the only plausible explanation for some people's bizarre behaviour (my teacher really is an alien!)...I'd like to believe that...
Ever wondered why all "Gods" come from 'the heavens"? ;)

I did read Chariots Of The Gods way back, it's not an unfamiliar idea. Thing is, they don't. From Gods such as Poseidon, Neptune, Pluto etc in the Mediterranean, to the various spirits and gods of cultures such as the native Americans and Maoris, plenty of them, you'll find powerful and pivotal deities who aren't sky-born, and many of those who are are via coincidence (e.g. gods who are birds and so forth). To the ancient mind, the three most common awesome sights in nature are the ocean, big mountains and the sky, the latter being the most ever changing and dynamic (the Mayans and Aztecs and Incas had separate gods for thunder, sun and rain), so it's no wonder they worshipped the most visible and dramatic things they didn't understand. Mythology simply links up all of the stories and creates a framework, so there's nothing profound about a majority of religions having a king sitting in the heavens who has the power of thunder and lightning and is essentially aerial. A few unexplained sights in the sky over time, such as eclipses, comets and weird atmospheric lights, and you entrench the legends...

Having said that, the scene in Abrams Star Trek II, where the crew f### with the Prime Directive and inspire the alien primitive culture to start carving Enterprise images, is pretty interesting...Alien v Predator described something similar in its story...some real life hieroglyphics from the ancient world are interesting, to say the least...

Could be imagination, though - what would an archaeologist 3000 years from now, if the world was to go through another dark ages and lose the progress it's made so far, make of things that might amazingly survive, like Sci-Fi movie promo posters or Star Wars action figures (a time capsule buried in someone's backyard, for example). They'd probably be labelled as evidence of alien contact, or figures of actual aliens who visited the planet...! What's to say the Egyptian who carved a very alien looking head in a pyramid wasn't just a 3000BC version of H.R.Giger...?

If aliens did land and offered opportunity to take a ride who wouldn't accept?
Can understand how people would be terrified of such things and that religions, science, economies etc would be torn down but personally couldn't think of anything more exciting or interesting. Might help a few earthlings to broaden their horizons a wee bit.
Have always thought there must be something else out there ever since I can remember.
Doubt it will happen anytime soon but one can dream now and then.

Do i believe in alien life anywhere...?

No..but open to the possibility there is and wont argue either way.

Do i believe in intelligent life visiting us?

Nope.

Fair enough, but care to explain what makes our world so unique?
Seems like an awful waste of space if it's just us.

Well where is the hard evidence it isnt?

Well like others have said it's a two way street, I can't provide hard evidence now but If I could travel around our galaxy with no limitations I'd put my life savings that I'd find at least one intelligent civilization or at least ruins of said civilisation if they have since died out.
I actually strongly believe there would be marine & Microbial like life in our own solar system as well.
People who believe we are alone in the universe nowadays after all Science has discovered are becoming a minority, the few who still believe aliens are nothing more than fairytales are very arrogant IMO.
So I think a person who still believes we are alone in the universe has just as much responsibility to provide proof and back up such a grand statement.
Just because we haven't seen them yet (arguably) doesn't mean jack shit since we have only been a space faring species for around 55 years.

It's like me going fishing and catching one fish and then stating that it is the only fish that has ever existed because it's all I can see.

Ty for not being a dick....
There is no fact in this ...i could rebute..but its an opinion which i will respect

But just let you know its not a 2 way street...if you claim something exists its up to you to prove it...absence of proof does not equal proof of absence...otherwise its just faith.

I'd suggest that everybody should refrain from arguing about whether intelligent life exists in the universe, because when logic and probability are used it's utterly ridiculous to suggest that anything but billions of intelligent species will have developed throughout the universe. Billions.

The question is not if they exist, that's a given, an absolute certainty and not worth discussing any more. The question now is have we encountered them, and if we have, when, etc, and if we haven't will we.

Those are the ONLY relevant questions.

IMO if any species can conquer interstellar travel, they'd have as much interest in us as an anthill would to Christopher Columbus while he walked past it when he first landed in America.

Would he crush the anthill just cos he can?

Would he stop to try to converse with the ants?

I think he'd just keep walking.

Having said all that I do like this topic and remain slightly open-minded....it's some of the abduction stories that unnerve me.

I'd like to highlight why I believe in Aliens and why I believe they have visited Earth at some point.

The building blocks for life are everywhere in space.
We know that meteorites/comets carry these ingredients and I believe seed planets with life.
Water is very common is the universe and not unique to Earth.
Jupiters Moon contains a subsurface ocean that contains more water than all of our oceans.
There are countless exoplanets that are in the habitable region from it's star for water to flow.
We have discovered that microbes from Earth can live in the vacuum of space.
The Viking Landers discovered evidence of micro-organisms in the soil of Mars, but the lead scientist was told to downplay it by NASA.
The sheer weight of numbers and the fact that our planet, star & solar system might not be as special and unique as we once thought.
In fact solar systems and planets like ours are everywhere, so I'd say the odds are heavily in favour of aliens existing.

The universe is approx 13.8 billion years old and Earth is only a 4.5 billion years old.
So we are relatively young and there was a massive period of time before our planet even existed.
Many alien civilisation could have developed and flourished billions of years before the dinosaurs even walked our Earth.
Imagine going back to 1915 and showing our technology to them, now imagine what a being that has had billions of years headstart would be capable of.
If you told someone a 1000 years ago that we are controlling robotic rovers on other planets/moons they wouldn't be able to fathom it.
We know planets don't last forever, any intelligent species eventually has to become space faring and master FTL travel to survive.
That's why I think it's very likely we have been visited at some point in our history and I'm open to the idea of being visited recently/now.
I also think it's strange how so many astronauts, army, air force, cia people have stepped forward and made claims of alien visitation.
What would professional people like that gain by lying?
Also there is evidence to suggest there was a deliberate effort to cover up to prevent a public panic and to ridicule every facet of the subject.

So I'd like to know you're reasons for not believing in them? Just as much ''faith'' if you ask me.

When I read a post that says other life in the universe is a given accept it as fact...what am I supposed to say...? ...its insulting..I dont want to discuss this subject with people that have that mindset...sorry i dont.

It irks me that I Have to accept that something that is not a given to even begin this discussion....I said i wouldnt argue it but dont tell me i must accept it as a given....its like telling me to accept a diety because its a given because the story has lasted 1000s of years and has billions of followers so probability is high its true

Apoligies kanga you made decent attempt at a proper discussion

In this case I think it is a 2 way street, I could use the same 'absence of proof does not equal proof of absence' re intelligent alien life when you consider just how unfathomly big our universe is and that probability suggests if there is any life in the universe like us then there is most likely stacks of it and we probably sit in the middle in terms of evolution and intelligence.

The one thing that might make us a focus to other intelligent life is our violent history and arsenal of nuclear weaponry.
