Aliir Aliir is a key defender with elite intercept-marking skills who generates a wealth of drive out of the Sydney Swans’ backline. Although he’s just 25, the 2013 draftee is now one of the Swans’ most experienced backmen after the retirement of champion defenders Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Nick Smith. Aliir’s height, excellent verticle leap and cat-like movement around the footy also make him a handy option as a back-up ruckman. Born in Kenya to Sudanese parents, Aliir is an inspiration to kids from diverse backgrounds starting a new chapter in Australia. Easily, think it was more to do with the $$$ and where we wanted to spend that money.

We offered him one year apparently*, PA offered four. I think he left the Club on very good terms, is still mates with our players and is always very positive about the Club.

Truth is he had no idea how to ruck and was entirely clueless when played forward. It was as smart as playing JPK at CHF or full back. 4A is a classic confidence and specialist player.

None of us should begrudge his success.

Suffice to say that time has not healed the wound - what an epic utensil-up by our list management!!

Trading away a 25 year old gun defender for virtually nothing, phark me...

We gave Aliir every opportunity. He played in defence 70% of the times he played for the Swans. The sea change seems to have had the biggest impact rather than going playing in defence again

He was in AA conversation when playing in his defensive role while with the Swans. Playing in his role is the biggest impact for Aliir.

All clubs lose good players that go on to become better players in a different set-up. Swans fans dwell on it a disproportionate amount. I'd rather just be happy about what we've achieved this seasons, and what servants of the club have gone on to be able to achieve elsewhere. Just shows how good the club is at developing quality football players.

Aliir is great to watch, and it feels much better just enjoying watching him play, rather than constantly bemoaning the club for letting him leave. I'd recommend adopting that mindset for the Negative Nancies here. Football is more fun when you find ways to enjoy it rather than sulking.

To say his performance this year is a surprise would be inaccurate. Swans fans loved him (albeit despite his occasional brain fades), the club would have loved to have kept him. He was on the precipice, and this year he's put it together playing in a position that suits his strengths.

If talk of cap pressures is accurate (and all indicators suggest they are), i don't think we really had a choice with this trade. Clubs map out their salaries years in advance and place value on specific positions / players. Port were willing and able to offer a deal that we weren't able to match given the value we place on others in the team.

Fact is sometimes tough calls need to be made, and aliir is undoubtedly one of those tough calls that had to be made.

Aliir is a better player at Port than he was at the Swans. He never made the All Australian squad while with us. We gave him every opportunity to show his worth but we couldn't make it click - Port could.

C'mon, mate. You can't just make a statement and then say "it's not the day for this" when someone states it's untrue. I've always been one of Aliirs biggest fans and always viewed him as a future (or present) star since he first played, but he was never in-line fir the All-Australian team at the Swans. His best season with us was probably 2016, and even then he didn't play enough to be in the conversation.

But I agree, it's not the day to dwell on players that left the club. It's a day to celebrate the achievements of the boys ehl got us where we are this year.

Its not a win win, it’s a lose win

He asked for the trade. We needed a ruckman more than we needed a loose 3rd tall. The lack of a ruckman was why we played him in the ruck to begin with.

How else would we have gotten the 2nd rounder to give to WCE? Please enlighten me.

Aliir plays 1 role in a side, really well: loose man in defense. Last time Port played Geelong he played on Cameron. Cameron kicked 5 and Geelong won by 21 points. This time he plays on non-finals forward Rohan who had 2 handballs to half time iirc and the game was basically over. Make Aliir actually defend and Port become a much easier side to defeat.

We don't need a player who can't defend a man in the backline. That's not how we play. Aliir also isn't an amazing ball user.

Trading him when he asked for the trade to get a player we actually needed makes perfect sense and is the definition of a win-win.
