Burgoyne has been mammoth. Ignore SC/DT scores, other than Lewis he'd be arguably Hawk's best player and well and truly deserves an All Australian spot.

Smith> Burgoyne and it's not close.

Brodie Smith, Adelaide Crows.
Never Previously All Australian. 22 games in 2014. 287 kicks, 108 marks, 209 handballs, averaging 13.0 kicks, 4.9 marks, 9.5 handballs. 11 Goals, Eight Behinds. 18 Clearances, 76 Inside 50, 109 Rebound 50m (second in the AFL). 35 Tackles.

Shaun Burgoyne, Hawthorn. All Australian 2006. 22 games in 2014. 257 kicks, 84 marks, 241 handballs, averaging 11.7 kicks, 3.8 marks, 11.0 handballs. 10 Goals, Five Behinds. 73 Clearances, 75 Inside 50, 42 Rebound 50m. 89 Tackles.

Similar disposal numbers not as many R50 but way more clearances and over double the tackle numbers. Sorry Crows fans but I want defenders who actually know how to defend and not simply get the ball fed to them.

From the Squad of 40 - Here is the side:

B A Rance E Mackenzie C Hooker
HB N Malceski H Taylor S Burgoyne
C N Fyfe T Rockliff J Lewis
HF B Harvey L Franklin R Gray
F L Parker J Roughead D Martin
R S Jacobs J Selwood (Captain) G Ablett
Inter D Heppell J Gunston M Priddis L Breust
There won't be 4 tall backmen. One of the Smiths will grab a pocket.

Burgoyne has more clearances more tackles and less rebound 50s because he spends more time in the middle.

Now that the squad is released I'll update. This is what they should pick instead of throwing too many mids in the pockets and flanks.

FB: N.Smith - D.Talia - E.Mackenzie
HB: B.Smith - C.Hooker - N.Malceski
C: D.Heppell - J.Kennedy - J.Lewis
HF: R.Gray - N.Riewoldt - B.Harvey
FF: L.Breust - L.Franklin - J.Roudhead
R: S.Jacobs - N.Fyfe - T.Rockliff
INT: G.Ablett - L.Parker - S.Pendlebury - J.Selwood

No surprise everybody is complaining about X and Y missing from the squad and X and Y belonging to their team.

Franklin only lock from the Swans imo. Kennedy should be but got injured for a bit so could miss, Nick Smith and Malceski would certainly be in the mix also.

No Cotchin or Hodge either. Nothing against Jones - but he's very vanilla. Hard worker but doesn't hurt you.
Wouldn't have had either Hodge or Cotchin myself. For me it was either Priddis or Jones, meh either way they aint making the final squad. Hodge was the closest, but his 'rests' probably hurt him.

I've watched pretty much every Hawthorn game this year and physically attended 5 matches. He started like a house on fire and got ordinary real quick. Selection rewards players having excellent seasons, not players who do their bit part but not much else.
At no stage, at any time, has Burgoyne been ordinary. He's had periods of less awesome but never ordinary. Has some quieter games stats wise when he plays a role down back rather than in the middle, but is always solid and often exceptional.

That was only when Mitchell was missing. Majority of the time he was across HB and the reason for less R50 is that the Hawks don't concede that many I50s in the first place.

Smith is a certainty, best small defender of the year by far.

It's the Big Footy way. Squad gets released and fans fall over each other trying to squeeze as many of their players in as possible. Same thing happens with the ladder prediction threads where supported side always jumps higher than it should be and I bet if a poll was run on who'd win the Rising Star most voters would vote for the player from their side if nominated.

Yep, Burgoyne shouldn't be judged harshly just because his numbers are down in terms of R50. Not his fault his midfield doesn't run one way like the Crows.

I'm not in the least surprised Hodge isn't there but I think you could easily underestimate his season. Think he'll be in the top few in our B&F if it was counted right now.
