Daryl Wakelin and Matthew Scarlett.

OH, hang on, they didn't make the AA team at full back.

Pavlich did at......full back, that position that he sometimes played near when he wasn't floating across half back, or half foward.

Then my answer is Pavlich.

How many did Ben Hart get? I think Ben is a good player but his continued inclusion in the Team of the Year mystifies me.
I think the Team of the Year selectors need to take a good hard look at themselves. They are selecting a team to beat Ireland in a hybrid game rather than selecting the best 22 players in the land. If you were picking a side, wouldn't you prefer Travos Johnstone or Des Headland on a half back flank to Ben Hart?
For the first time in my life, I think the umpires got it more right than the so-called experts.

Come on guys. Have a think about it. All the players you have metioned are defenders. Defenders hardly poll at all.

I hereby declare this thread a waste of bytes.

Bingo Defenders do not poll well ever.
I mean McPharlin got 3 votes only because he was quite simply aweseome from Half back against the Roos.
But sadly in the eyes of a umpire keeping a 4 goal a game player goaless is not as good as a 4 goal a game player kicking 4 goals

Ben Hart has been sensational this year, like every other season of his. He's not an outstanding player - not someone the umpires would notice (hence receiving 0 votes in the brownlow). He does his job of stopping a key opposition forward very, very well and deserves to be rewarded with AA selection for this reason.

3 votes is not enough to give on a game. Theres 44 blokes out on the field, how can 3 umpiress break it down to pick the best 3?
Something should be changed.

Better yet umpires need to look at the player group more closely there is no way that of the top 20 players in the competition the vast majority of them where midfielders

Ben Hart NEVER polls well if at all.Mind you he is not Kay Cottee when it comes to defenders polling badly. That's why they call it the midfielders medal after all.
I would take Ben Hart on a half back flank anyday over Travis Johnstone and Des Headland if the idea of being a defender is to negate your opponent and then run off the back line.
I use to think a lot of the Brownlow but recently (considering the standard of umpiring in the AFL) I find it harder and harder to take seriously!

I take your points on board concerning Ben Hart. One point was made that forwards don't kick many goals on him. That's true, but how many decent goal scoring forwards are there in modern football? The Locketts, Dunstalls, Abletts, etc are all gone, so a defender's job is made one hell of a lot easier. How many half forward flankers are there who boot goals regularly? Very few.
The 2002 half back flanker needs to provide run and create goal scoring opportunities as well as kick a few himself (like King from the Kangaroos), not just make sure his opponent doesn't touch the ball.
Ben Hart is one of football's top defenders, no doubt about that, but no way can I concede that he's one of the best 2 half back flankers in the business.

So who are you suggesting should have been AA instead of Benny Hart - McCabe, Hay, Rawlings or Joel Smith? Hart had a great year & thoroughly deserved his selection.

What about the players that got a lot of votes but didnt get a look in the AA Jason Johnson & Peverill spring to mind.
As midfielders generally dominate the Brownlow vote count, there will alway be high vote getter who miss AA selection as you can't pick a team full of midfielders.

Just for posterities sake...

B ARCHER (5) PAVLICH (3) C JOHNSON (3) 11
HB HART (0) LEPPITSCH (3) MONTGOMERY (0) 3
C YZE (17) BLACK (25) AKERMANIS (8) 50
HF B. JOHNSON (4) TREDREA (9) VOSS (17) 30
F DARCY (16) NIETZ (11) BROWN (13) 40

R PRIMUS (9) FRANCOU (21) COUSINS (16) 46

INT CRAWFORD (17) LAPPIN (7) RICCUITO (13) SIMPSON (7) 44

If we look at the totals going by lines the centreline is clearly the highest. The half forward line is probably higher than it should be, boosted by Voss being named there, whist Darcy is probably (!) not a forward pocket player.

The point being that to win the brownlow playing in the backline would be nigh on impossible, from half forward would still be extremely difficult (Tredrea 9 votes, Riewoldt 11, I think those two had the most marks in the comp and they were nowhere near it)

You see, this is where people can't resist being silly. I don't think McCabe, Hay, Rawlings nor Smith should have been in the side. I've already stated in a previous post that I thought Travis Johnstone and Des Headland would be my half back flankers in a Team of the Year. Unlike SOME supporters, I don't think a player should be selected just because he plays for the team I support.

Simpson from the roos was one of the best players this year without a doubt. He just doesnt get the fame like the Hirds and the Voss'
