Reservoir announce their 5th VFLW/AFLW recruit since grading. How long until the NFNL bring in points for women’s footballers?

They may win the flag by 200
Destroying women’s football by all reports all clubs in the competitions top end players are being messaged by them offering money womens players couldn’t dream of at most clubs

Disappointing IF true and something you would imagine NFNL will keep an eye on, especially with an uneven draw in Division 1 (7 teams).

Don’t think it’s just the top end. One of my mates partners was offered good money and she plays in D3.

Did a little digging and is sounds like you are both on the MONEY.

Wow wee ..... IF it proves to be true, then surely its going to throw the women's comp into a spin!

I know some clubs are paying base of $25 a week.

Honestly surprised so many clubs have gone down the pay route for women’s footballers.
I’m sure the payments would be minimal. And I’d say the amount of money all these women actually put through the club will out way the payments substantially and put the club in a very good spot financially.

$25 is a lot different to the $3-700 price range I’m hearing elsewhere and we are talking not even division 1 🤣

The costs of actually putting a women’s team (and men’s) on the park (excluding any player payments) is still much higher than any subs collected. You have league fees, umpires, trainers, coaches, medical tape etc. you definitely don’t make money putting more sides on the park

Feedback I have is that the new CEO has been well received by club officials. Lets see where the season takes us and judge on what happens in 2026 as surely he cant he held accountable for any past grievances?
Agree with this. Have spoken to him, he's very passionate about it so that is a big tick in my book.

I am not sure why women's players should not be paid? If they are playing and putting their body on the line (like the men) why not? Does the amount matter right now? I understand the concern about buying flags (if true) that will be stamped out by a points system you would think not salary cap. I have spoken to quite a few clubs (in question) about this and the numbers are nothing like what is being posted here from my understanding. Not even close. Truth is clubs want success and and some may be getting good buck this year but they have been playing for nothing to build it also to date. Is it different to what happens at mens other than points? Womens footy is still in its infancy & if it keeps them in footy and if they can get paid I have no issue with it. Do you?

😂 It’s probably not surprising that the clubs involved with paying rumoured rates would see and note things differently to those asking questions.

Women’s football is still developing, and many clubs are working hard to grow these programs alongside long-established men’s teams. That does come with challenges, particularly as expectations and costs continue to rise.

There’s a possibility that a gap may emerge over time between clubs that have the capacity to financially support both mens and womens programs and those that don’t. For some committees, trying to meet increasing demands across the board could become quite difficult to sustain and drive some clubs into the ground or have people walk away.

Hopefully, as things evolve, a balanced approach can be found that supports the growth of women’s football while also ensuring clubs remain stable and sustainable in the long term.

Agree great response.

I mean clubs can do what they like and if they have the money to do it good on them. But it’s gone from a space where no one was paying to most D1 forced to pay something to keep or attract players.

If clubs see value in it great, but my guess it’ll do some harm with some clubs walking away or having their players poached away.

💯 agree Kanga.

My understanding is that this is absolutely not just an NFNL challenge but one that AFL Vic will look into as the women's programs mature across all competitions.

Just as men's have, I believe we will see points and caps implemented over time to support a lot of what you have mentioned Kanga, especially after reading the recent article by AFL Vic rep Greg Madigan on his thoughts around those two mechanism's supporting some sort of equality safe guards (as bets they can).

Nobody is being forced though - it's like men's footy, you can choose to pay (or not pay) what you want, and if you want to be successful you may have to pay for it.

There are a lot of extremely average male footballers making very good money all over Victoria, so why not give the women a lick of the ice-cream.

I mean sure you aren’t forced, just means it’s going to be a hell of a lot harder if you don’t want to or haven’t got the means to pay.

Hearing a number of clubs about to fall over with women. Most trying to wait each other out and swarm on the players.
My point exactly. Some clubs are in a position to invest heavily in player payments across their women’s programs, which can create an uneven playing field within the same division. Especially now that grading games are removed and clubs are placed in divisions they don’t belong. When offers of several hundred dollars per player are being made across entire lists, it naturally puts pressure on clubs that are still trying to build their programs within more limited means.

At the same time, many clubs are working hard to support both men’s and women’s football, and that balance can be challenging, particularly when match day revenue from women’s games often doesn’t yet cover anywhere near those increasing costs.

This isn’t about questioning the value of women’s football, but rather about ensuring its growth is sustainable for all clubs involved. Finding a model that supports development, competitiveness, and financial viability across the board will be important for the long-term health of the game and right now the whole womens competition is in strife.

I agree
Let’s put the women on at 2.30pm on a Saturday charge $10.00 gate and give them the whatever they make on the gate
That should satisfy the women
