Its a bit quiet at the Gabba....
This time last year, Barney had already whipped up a storm by laying claim to support from everyone other than Essendon supporters.
There was alot of focus on both teams, Essendon and their shot at immortality, the Lions and the possible GF jitters and MCG stage fright, the winning streak.
All different this year....a look at the 3 main footy web sites ( afl.com, realfooty.com and the Herald Sun Footy site) over the week shows an alarming number of articles about Collingwood. The Pies in after 12 years, Mick's efforts, the Cloke affair, Eddie, Buckley from Brisbane, O'Bree from Brisbane.....just to name a few.
Very quiet from the Lions. Matthews had a dig on Monday over the rooms....Aker said a bit.....but not alot else really. Even the Brownlow result was feted for a few hours, then faded. Today has an article after the Lions training last night about McDonald and Scott loking fit.
I think Matthews has kept a lower profile this year on purpose. There is no question Collingwood is a bigger club than Essendon. Let the Pies run in the media all week. Eddie has a TV station that will carry the stories, the papers will sell well with black and white stripes on the front and back pages.....the team is in the GF for the first time in 12 years, and may be prone to losing focus. Matthews as we all know, will know the power of the Collingwood media frenzy intimately.
I am pretty sure Matthews has been coaching a good game since Monday....Mick may be enjoying this week a little too much perhaps.
