Been watching quite a few older games on youtube - especially of the 90's era. Thought it would a bit of fun for us older farts to make up our All-Time team via parts of the field, starting with the backline. The point would be to make the best backline of our players since 1990, that would function as a working backline. So, making sure there is a balance between KPD's, "Stoppers", "HB Runners" etc .
This would be my crack at it
All Richmond 1st Team
B: Grimes Rance C.Newman
HB: Houli Astbury Vlaustin
All Richmond 2nd Team
B: D.Kellaway Gaspar A.Kellaway
HB: Short Balta J.Bowden
Honourable Mentions:
Nathan Broad
Scott Turner
Liam Baker
Dan Rioli
Notes:
Newman Vs Duncan Kellaway
- I flipped on these 2 a fair bit best #1 & #2, but landed on Newman as he was more rounded between being a stopper + creator. Duncan was, i think, perhaps the best pure stopping small-mid sized player we have had since 1990 - also building enough tank over time to become a midfield tagger. Newman got the nod based on his ability to create a bit more, but also his leadership
Astbury Vs Gaspar - Flipped on these 2 as well. Gaspar, although he become somewhat maligned for his ball usage and brain farts was an elite 1on1 stopper, earning back to back All australian FB roles. Ultimately though i thought Gaspar was more of a pure FB and that role has to go to Rance & the partnership he, Grimes & Astbury made together was proven to be a core to 3 flags. As a unit, its hard to break up that trio,
J.Bowden VS Houli - another 1 i flipped on, but ultimately it was Houli's ability to Stop & run i went with & again, the combination that the core of the 17-20 team is a hard unit to break up. Great backlines always revolve around how well they all work together VS individual skills. Bowden was more of an all rounder, playing HFF, Wing at times, where Houli was a 1 role guy.
Honourable Mentions: Broad is the stiffest of the lot to miss out. a excellent stopper and adequate ball mover, he has been a staple of our backline now for almost a decade. Him missing out is almost appropriate as i think he has been a somewhat undervalued part of our premiership succcess - but ultimately, i went with the 2 Kellaways in the b-team. Could have switched between Andrew & Nathan all day - but settled on Andrew as he was a excellent stopper and again, the AA caps just got him the nod VS the Premiership succcess. Certainly wouldn't argue against anyone swapping them out.
Feel free to discuss, throw in your line-ups and explain why you think mine is wrong etc. Just a bit of fun & an excuse for us older guys to rememberry those past Tiger greats. Highly recommend anyone getting on youtube and watching those older games popping up on these - has been a lot of fun, especially with us having a pretty serious rebuilding season
