Been watching quite a few older games on youtube - especially of the 90's era. Thought it would a bit of fun for us older farts to make up our All-Time team via parts of the field, starting with the backline. The point would be to make the best backline of our players since 1990, that would function as a working backline. So, making sure there is a balance between KPD's, "Stoppers", "HB Runners" etc .

This would be my crack at it

All Richmond 1st Team
B: Grimes Rance C.Newman
HB: Houli Astbury Vlaustin

All Richmond 2nd Team
B: D.Kellaway Gaspar A.Kellaway
HB: Short Balta J.Bowden

Honourable Mentions:
Nathan Broad
Scott Turner
Liam Baker
Dan Rioli

Notes:

Newman Vs Duncan Kellaway - I flipped on these 2 a fair bit best #1 & #2, but landed on Newman as he was more rounded between being a stopper + creator. Duncan was, i think, perhaps the best pure stopping small-mid sized player we have had since 1990 - also building enough tank over time to become a midfield tagger. Newman got the nod based on his ability to create a bit more, but also his leadership

Astbury Vs Gaspar - Flipped on these 2 as well. Gaspar, although he become somewhat maligned for his ball usage and brain farts was an elite 1on1 stopper, earning back to back All australian FB roles. Ultimately though i thought Gaspar was more of a pure FB and that role has to go to Rance & the partnership he, Grimes & Astbury made together was proven to be a core to 3 flags. As a unit, its hard to break up that trio,

J.Bowden VS Houli - another 1 i flipped on, but ultimately it was Houli's ability to Stop & run i went with & again, the combination that the core of the 17-20 team is a hard unit to break up. Great backlines always revolve around how well they all work together VS individual skills. Bowden was more of an all rounder, playing HFF, Wing at times, where Houli was a 1 role guy.

Honourable Mentions: Broad is the stiffest of the lot to miss out. a excellent stopper and adequate ball mover, he has been a staple of our backline now for almost a decade. Him missing out is almost appropriate as i think he has been a somewhat undervalued part of our premiership succcess - but ultimately, i went with the 2 Kellaways in the b-team. Could have switched between Andrew & Nathan all day - but settled on Andrew as he was a excellent stopper and again, the AA caps just got him the nod VS the Premiership succcess. Certainly wouldn't argue against anyone swapping them out.

Feel free to discuss, throw in your line-ups and explain why you think mine is wrong etc. Just a bit of fun & an excuse for us older guys to rememberry those past Tiger greats. Highly recommend anyone getting on youtube and watching those older games popping up on these - has been a lot of fun, especially with us having a pretty serious rebuilding season :)

rance, grimes, astbury just have to be a lock
Gaspar was a fantastic one on one player for his time in a bad team.

What a shock to see the op leave out D Rioli, a player who he thought should never have been given an opportunity to play half back, from both the first and second alternative backlines.

Ask yourself would Houli have ever traded for pick 7 & 28 in a very strong and deep draft. Ask yourself how close Houli came to winning a B & F. Ask yourself why Houli's average player rating as a mature HBF was around 9 and Rioli's is around 11.

I love Bachar, totally admire him as a person and player, he was excellent. But Rioli is a clearly better player. Finished 2nd B&F by a vote in a finals year in 2022. 5th in 2023. And won it in 2024. Houli maybe had one top 5 ever from memory and never got close to winning it. Those were Rioli's only 3 full seasons as a half back for us. Walks into our best backline this century, along with Rance, Grimes, Vlastuin of the recent players. Gaspar would surely be the 2nd key defender. You would have 7 defenders in a team so Bowden would likely be one and Houli and the Kellaway Bros are probably fighting out the 7th position. Any of that trio would probably be stiff to miss out.

Taylor Hunt and Corey Ellis should be the flankers

not basing it on stats or individual honours etc. I'm going with...

Grimes Rance Vlastuin
Baker Balta D. Rioli

All just unbelievable players that suit how footy is played these days

No to Newman. Was a good honest footballer but Houli a consistently much better player for a much longer time. Houli over Rioli by miles for mine.

No to either of the Kellaway boys. Heart and soul types but neither could kick. In my view Andy probably closer to a selection but that third tall role is arguably our strongest given the blokes like Grimes, Vlastuin, Broad and even someone like Bowden would be a better selection.

Gaspar also a no for me. Largely because of disposal.

Thinking back to blokes like Wigney and Bulluss really gives me nightmares. Thanks for that....

Mine:
Grimes, Rance, Vlastuin
Houli, Bowden, Broad

There’s no way broad plays before gaspar, Bowden or Newman
I'll have him every day before Newman. Gaspar doesn't play because I've chosen Rance, Astbury and Grimes ahead of him. As for Bowden...well, Broad's not really doing the same job as him. Houli would be the one keeping Bowden out.

Ayres Langford Collins
Kennedy/Tuck Mew Jencke

Hart Brennan McIntosh
Worsfold Jakovich McKenna
I'm still picking ours. You can add the Geelong 2007-11 backline to that list too, and I'll stick pick our 6.

I can't believe how so many people here don't rate or at least underrate that backline.

Ours was great ... Rance and Grimes would likely be in our best ever team, Vlastuin definitely in the mix.
Just think there's a few better, but no shame.

Ours only gets overlooked because our players have to have ridiculous seasons to get AA selections rather than a Geelong player that just has to show up for the games to get them

Every player I mentioned can do whatever youve got broad in the team to do… plus a whole lot more…

Well, Gaspar could defend but was a lousy kick and Bowden was a nice kick but couldn't defend.

Broad can kick and defend. As for Newman, he's a completely different type of player to Broad. So I'm not sure he could play on a tall, like Broad can do.
