Could someone let me know if this is done somewhere or if the AFL rank the amateur leagues somehow I’ve seen a post from 2005 that did some ranking including o’s leagues but a lot has changed since then ..
Mostly interested in the leagues just below VFL,WAFL,SANFL,NEAFL, NTFL,TSL...

Thanks mike

VFL/WAFL/SANFL
NEAFL
NTFL/TSL (hard to compare these two, it's hard to compare the NTFL to any other league considering the climate)

The AFL is a sports league and also a brand name. It’s like asking people to rank the best ‘Coke’ drinks out of coke, Pepsi, tab, RC etc etc ...

The standard of play ranking would probably be:

1. VFL
2. = SANFL/WAFL
4. NEAFL

Thats at State league level but I think the OP was asking for more than that, ie the levels below the State leagues.

In Victoria for example, the Ovens and Murray league is highly regarded.

There was a state wide league representative championship which kinda sorted out this question, but it no longer occurs!

AFL Vic do it every year but it’s only based on interleague results, so depends who wins and loses, and those leagues that don’t play aren’t ranked. This is 2019

So there’s a good example: Eastern FL was ranked #1 in the state but because they opted out of interleague for a year, were not ranked in 2020.

2020

1. Northern FNL
2. MPNFL
3. Geelong FNL
4. Goulburn Valley FL
5. Ovens & Murray FL
6. Hampden FNL
7. Western Region FL
8. Bendigo FNL
9. Ballarat FNL
10. Central Murray FNL
11. AFL Outer East
12. Wimmera FNL
13. Gippsland FNL
14. Bellarine FNL
15. Murray FNL
16. Heathcote DFNL
17. Geelong DFL
18. Riddell DFL
19. Sunraysia FL
20. North Central FL
21. Southern FNL
22. West Gippsland FL
23. CHFL
24. Colac DFNL
25. Ellinbank DFNL
26. Horsham DFL
27. MCDFNL
28. Kyabram DFNL
29. Loddon Valley FL
30. Golden Rivers FL

Typically, the top few spots are rotated among Eastern, Northern, MPNFL, Geelong, O&M and Goulburn Valley.

For Victoria, that grouping of Leagues seems accurate, ranking them is problematic but I would suggest that the top teams from any of these Leagues could match it with some of the VFL teams.

Maybe time for a system where the best young talents play against each other at Universities for a National championship comp with the best players being drafted into the AFL.

Yep I can hear it already. “Keep that shit in America” but in all seriousness an elite 2nd tier Comp would be nice.

Still think there is a decent gap between VFL and the next best leagues in the state. I know a couple of blokes who have played in the Ovens & Murray League on half decent money and they compared it to SANFL Reserves standard

Perhaps against the likes of Frankston and Coburg who have quite weak, inexperienced squads. Think anybody else in the VFL would smash top local sides.

As a guide, the top tier local salary cap is now $200k. A stand-alone VFL side has a salary cap of $380k, so almost double.

There’s no doubt some very good local sides around but they don’t tend to have the depth of a VFL team. The 22nd player named for a VFL side will be a very bloody good player.

Yep, thats possibly about right. They don't have VFL reserves, those not picked in the 22 drop back to local leagues.

Thats a good analysis of the where the leagues fit, especially the salary cap differential.
