Dumb question, with only 18 in the photo how did they handle injuries during the game, or did the 19th and 20th men not rate a spot in the photo? The famous MACHINE team.
That (18) would have been the full team back in 1929. Not until 1930 was a 19th man (reserve) allowed. In 1897 there were 20 per side, that changed to 18 in 1899.Dumb question, with only 18 in the photo how did they handle injuries during the game, or did the 19th and 20th men not rate a spot in the photo?
or a bad breakSo if a player broke his leg in the first five minutes of a game (1899-1929) it was just bad luck!!
I love looking at these old photos. So many of our all-time greats are in this one.The famous MACHINE team.

Just love it too.I love looking at these old photos. So many of our all-time greats are in this one.
Assuming this photo was taken on the day of a match (in 1929), it must be when we played Richmond in Rd. 1 at Victoria Park (we won by 17 points): https://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1929/041419290427.html
Bruce Andrew only played 4 games that year, and that is the only game (of those 4) where this lineup played, so it must be the Rd. 1 side.
And still not an official legend of the game. Ridiculous!!And then there is as great a goal kicker as ever kicked a goal.
Won the goal kicking TEN!!!!!!!! times.
Get that, TEN!!!!!!! times.

That's a great photo! To me, the similarity in looks between Peter Lucas, Bill Twomey and Keith Beckwith is uncanny, especially the latter two!
