All things Greece

I went to Greece. Loved Corfu, however Athens was my most disliked destination on my travels.
I was in Athens and Santorini about a month ago, I enjoyed both places though would say Santorini is a little overrated, yes the place looks beautiful with great scenery of the ocean and those white and blue painted restaurants/churches but the joint is over priced, I enjoyed Athens even though there were a fair few junkies/dodgy people getting around, I spoke to a few black people who were regretting moving there big time (not sure why you would move there with the economy etc.) saying that cab drivers won't stop for them and some people refuse to serve them in stores because they are black. Kinda shocked me the open and blatant racism.

For the greeks here, what's Athens like presently?

I love the Greek protest culture and spirit, would love to see Athens but have heard it really isnt safe for protesting unless you're connected or affiliated with one of the parties/groups involved.

Can anyone shed any light on it?

Yeah unfortunately racism in Greece is pretty bad. It doesn't help with the Golden Dawn party around.

Athens is a mess at the moment. Unemployment is at a all-time high and the streets are dangerous, full of trash, graffiti and violence. Also there's a difference being passionate about something you believe in and being outright stupid and that's what the Athenians are when it comes to protest. There's no need to bring flares, fireworks, dangerous objects and Molotov Cocktails to protests. TV stations, bus drivers etc... go on strikes regularly and makes everyday life in Athens very difficult. I have relatives in Athens that have been affected by the financial crisis. My cousins find it hard to find a job and have told me that they wish they had the life that I have here in Australia.

I just about lived on those when I was there, love how they put chips in them.

They have pretty good choc milk too, the best I had outside of Australia.
You've never tried this?

No I haven't tried that, always had trouble finding decent chocolate milk in the UK and the US, the stuff I tried just tasted too sweet.

Can someone tell me how hard it is to learn Greek?

On one hand Ive "grown up" around people speaking it fluently, but then on the other hand I was absolutely shit at learning Italian at high school and dropped it as soon as I could. :$

I have no real desire to learn how to read or write Greek, just speak it. Any help would be good. :)
