I don't see how a degree at Edith Cowan has the same value as that at UWA.

We should look at ways that the concept of value be introduced to education to be respectful of the student and the tax payer who pay for the service and respectful of the universities that provide a superior education outcome. This price signal will help make better decisions and promote competition into the sector.

If done properly, we should see more universities in the top 100 universities globally and may see a top 10 representation.

then again some aren't interested in better services, better education outcomes, value etc; as there is no better value than free shit.
There is already a signal to differentiate the top universities from the others, for year 12 leavers it is the ATAR. the one that is valued more has the higher ATAR due to higher demands to get into the particular university. This value is carried through to employers who see the degree and where it was attained as an important aspect of employing someone. The concept of value is already there, those who work the hardest and achieve the right results get into the more prestigious universities. The ATAR lives and dies on the concept of demand. If high achieving low income students are priced out of the top universities then the high quality institutions would find themselves lowering their minimum requirements to fill their places and reduce their standards. The teaching aspect of universities should be about attracting the best and brightest. Coming from a single parent household of $40k with my father supporting three kids, there was no way I could have gone to Monash if it had not been for my scholarships. It is hard enough as it is, making it even tougher for low income students would really see standards slide.

how did the scholarships help when we have HECS, Austudy, student loans and and Austudy system that lets you earn extra income?

certainly looking that way.

Bishop travels to NY to meet with uncle Rupert (as tone and kev did before assuming leadership) at the time of the knightmare episode.

Rupe starts tweeting, might have aimed it at peta but was directed at tone

bolta questions if the knightmare episode might cost the leadership to tone, introducing the idea of a change, the rest of the media jump on board building momentum.

Now two WA libs call for a spill, on the surface it looks like a coup.

probably would've happened in the last week but I'm guessing mal isn't content with the deputy position.

guess we'll find out Tuesday.

Abbott saying that the people elected him.so they should be able to kick him out will backfire. It's insulting to the backbench as they installed him in the first place.
And of course the fact that they can point out his approval ratings indicate the people DO want him kicked out.

Your provide no substance to your claims.

Edith Cowan isn't as good as UWA..based on your opinion?
Universities that provide superior outcomes, based on your opinion?

You have already stated that better decisions and outcomes will result from deregulation...you have once again failed to explain exactly how.

So far all you have proferred is free sh!t is holding back better outcomes. You completely ignore how giving away free sh!t has benefited the country.
You also conveniently ignored explaining what the introduction of the concept of value into Unis means.

How do you come on the conclusion that Edith Cowan doesn't provide the same value as UWA?
The simple answer would be that there already is a 'value' system within the tertiary sector.

I'm sure you can piece together the rest.

Interesting take on Abbott.
https://independentaustralia.net/politics/politics-display/why-one-term-tony-doesnt-care,7224
I don't swallow in completely in that I think Abbott is basically a sock puppet who genuinely believes whatever comes out of his mouth at the time and is so completely lacking in self awareness that he truly can't understand why people don't trust him.

I do believe its possible that the nazis in the IPA and their ilk saw him as the ultimate suicide bomber much like islamic radicals brainwash young, angry stupid men to blow themselves up. They probably couldn't believe there luck in finding such a perfectly stupid, belligerent, narcissist, sociopath to head the charge.

I just don't think Abbott is intelligent enough to realise that he's just being used as cannon fodder. No one could be as good an actor as that.

You do realise Abbott is a Rhodes Scholar and economics graduate from Oxford don't you? Makes your statement (and a number of other flogs in this thread) look a little silly

university rankings take into account different aspects of the institutions and I have never seen one where UWA hasn't come out on top.......ever.

and how? enable universities to raise fees to generate the revenues required to be invested back into students education. all of which is not only free to the student but they may get paid to study and receive student loans which don't have to be repaid until they earn.

A 250km round trip to uni each day is not cheap, so the scholarships went to travel and books and the like. I didn't get a cent from my dad, I actually put all my youth allowance into his account each week just to help him keep afloat (the divorce was horrible) while I worked a couple of days a week just to have something in my bank. I dont drink, or smoke, and while i was at uni i didnt even get a car because i couldnt afford it. If it wasn't for the scholarships I would have never been able to go to the uni I did. HECS is something to weigh up when applying, a big reason I applied for my course because it was relatively low cost. Growing up in a family drowned in debt and struggling, I didn't want to find myself heaping on a huge HECS when there is no guarrantee it will help me earn more.

Said it should before, the PM is proof you don't need to be a Rhodes Scholar to get a Rhodes Scholarship. I've seen his academic transcript floating in the ether too, it's hardly impressive.

Thanks for the link, the thread makes an interesting read. So the Libs have few of their own policies?
Reading Abbott's speech to the IPA was interesting in retrospect.
As are Admiral Byng's posts.
A recipe for civil war if ever I saw one.
Any combination of say 4-8 of those items selected at random would be enough to lose the coalition the next election. Trying to do all 75 at once would reduce their primary vote to single figures.

Bring back John Hewson.

So, so underrated.

Costello, Hewson, Kennett = Liberal Party dream team.
Kennett was an utter arsehole, sell off everything and destroy the poor and anyone not withing 20km of Melbourne CBD. In the mold of Morrison or Abetz, or perhaps most accurately Campbell Newman.

In hindsight Hewson looks much better than he did at the time but that might be because of the leaders (PMs and Oppn leaders) the nation has had since then - and that we now have a GST (the thing that killed him, which is better designed though still flawed, than the one he presented) which while unsettling for a while has not been the disaster it seemed it could be.

Serious question.

Wouldnt those clowns be happier to just leave Australia ?

And dont let the new cuddly dr Hewson fool you. The PM Hewson we rejected was one of the stoniest hearted right wing bastards going. Who was his right hand man in the election contest ?

The sweetest victory of all

I really don't know with Turnbull. He seems the obvious choice for an image make-over. But will the party room support somebody who might want a policy makeover as well?
I can see some Jim Hacker style candidate getting up just because the incumbent is on the nose in the public and the main alternative not in line with party room views on key issues. If so, he/she will probably be an Abbott clone in terms of policy - except maybe caring about IR reform, which Abbott doesn't give a toss about (may be his only good point) but supports purely because powerbrokers in the party do.
Turnbull would immediately be hit with the Republic, the ETS, and everything else has publicly supported in the past that he would have to back down on as leader. If gets the job, I doubt he'll last either.

Whoever is PM needs to start with:
Dump Hockey from Treasury (maybe to Defence?), and Cormann to the backbench; and dump large chunks of the budget. Then settle in and try for a more equitable, phased set of spending cuts and closing of tax loopholes. There is no budget crisis, but long term there is a problem which can be gradually addressed without large cutting of services and causing homelesness.

The budget was the turning point in terms of being viewed as fair and reasonable. Inability to get it through the Senate in terms of competency.
Abbott might even be able to survive (still very unlikely) if he was to turn around and state that he now recognises the 2014 budget was greatly out of line with public expectations and different measures will need to be put in place for the forthcoming budget.
