Ecco was a MegaDrive game long before it went to DC and it was also a Sega Saturn game I think.. I know for sure it was an MD game because I used to have it.

I totally agree that DC is a good system, As I said from what little experiance I have on DC they were far ahead of their time and even by todays standards there would probably be a market for new DC games, Probably even bigger than the GC market ;)
I might look around and see if I can get hold of a DC and give it a fair go against my Xbox but I think I know what'll win :)

That's a good point but it's not true.
The PS1 was aimed at Japanese teenagers. It's very hard for a non-Jap console to be accepted over there for some reason so anyone who can come up with a semi-decent home grown console has alot more chance of making a quick buck than an overseas company trying to do the same.
I could explain more but I honestly can't be bothered, Read a few really old PS1 mags or look about on the net and find the stories about PS1 in Japan.

You say the DC still stands up to the PS2 today. I noticed you left out the XBox. Does one asume that you think the XBox is head and shoulders above the competition right now, console wise?

As you know, I own a DC, fantastic console and great games. XBox has it's number though.

Dude.....I own one :D Pretty sure you have been over and played the damn thing with me??? Zaran is borrowing it at the moment, has been for ages. But he has now also bought an XBox so I might actually ask for it back.

Correct, well sort of, doesnt need to be a home grown console but it needs to conquer Japan. Apparently the XBox is the only console ever to survive not conquering Japan. Microsoft still struggles for a foothold in the Japanese market and it get's blown away by the PS in Japan but thanks to its absolutely huge numbers and following in the US, UK, Europe and Australia the XBox is still well and truly a success.

Read an article about it in the most recent Official XBox Mag. Those Japs are stupid though....do they realise they are missing out on Halo and Splinter Cell, althought I believe SC has crossed over to PS.

There still is!!

Border Down just came out about a month ago....

Well if you're talking technically, then of course it will.

Although you'll be surprised at how well it stands up. (if you play the right DC games anyway and not just any junk.)

There's no question Xbox is the most powerful of the three consoles.

Then Gamecube.

And then PS2.

But that alone does not make or break a console.

As you know, I own a DC, fantastic console and great games. XBox has it's number though.

Technically it has the DC's number, but where are all the classic memorable games that people will still be talking about in 5 or 10 years time?

Let's see....

Halo....

.

Ok, I'm struggling now.

(I, and a lot of gamers, would add Panzer and JSRF to that "list" too) edit: and Splinter Cell........maybe.....

Don't get me wrong - just about all I'm playing at the moment is Xbox Live - and I'm loving it too - but so far, very few Xbox games are true classics.

Many still have the WOW factor because a lot of them do look pretty (after all, they are running on the most powerful console to date so you would expect them to be visually impressive), but in a few years time, 99% of them be forgotten.

The best way to tell if a game is good or not is to go BACK to it a few years later - when technology has improved etc - and that's when you'll tell whether a game still stands up.

If you're only looking at the graphics, then you're only judging a 1/4 of what a game is.

Add these to that list.
Morrowind: Ok it's a PC port but still a damn fine game.
Star Wars: KOTOR this game is better than stroking a Wookie or Ewok soccer.
DOA Xtreme Volleyball: I know people will be talking about it for a long time to come.
MOHF: Again not an Xbox exclusive but it looks better on Xbox than anything else. The D-day landing will have people talking about it for awhile.

Halo stands alone as one of the greatest games of all time. Halo 2 though WILL be the greatest game of all time. Halo 2 looks so good Im not sure I will ever play anything ever again once I own that game!

How can you say Splinter Cell maybe? Blows away MGS and is just an awesome experience, easily the best 3rd person shooter in a long time, and you cant even really call it that as it's stealth that is more rewarding. Just a fantastic game with unrivalled graphics, I mean you walk by curtains and they will move, you can shoot out any light etc etc etc...

I was playing RTCW yesterday and although it's a FPS it pales in comparison. I tried to shoot out a light and alas it did not work. SC has it all, cant wait for the sequel.

MGS chugs. The second best third person shooter ever would be Syphon Filter then the Tomb Raider series and then probably Resident Evil. MGS was good for it's time but now that so many other games have come out following the same sort of theme it doesn't look like anything special.
MGS had all the cool gadgets and tricky little lighting effects with a pretty average story line as far as I remember it.
SC has a great story line, something you can actually see happening. (Ghost Recon anybody?) The gadgets are better in SC and in SC the "lights are the real star."

Syphon Filter also blew away MGS, Although it didn't have all the cool gadgets and the graphics weren't even as good as MGS but it was a great game to play, Full of funny little things like tazing guys until they set on fire :D
It's just a shame they ruined a good game with such crappy sequals.

Tomb Raider was also better than MGS, Even though the graphics in the early TR series were crap the game has survived for so long it can't really be skipped over in the classics list. The puzzles were great and who can mention the TR series without thinking about how Lara "evolved" through it?

Resident Evil really isn't a third person shooter, They call it survival horror. Games like Silent Hill and such are survival horror games but IMO the first RE was a true third person shooter. When RE came out there wasn't such a genre as survival horror. It's like something they invented because RE pretty much opened the door into a new genre. Any game that does that has to be added to the classics list.

Not an Xbox classic.

Star Wars: KOTOR this game is better than stroking a Wookie or Ewok soccer.

Will it be remembered as an Xbox classic?

I don't think so.

Popular at the time - sure.

DOA Xtreme Volleyball: I know people will be talking about it for a long time to come.

Maybe...

I think there should be more games like it for the US/PAL market........but there are already many similar games in Japan.

MOHF: Again not an Xbox exclusive but it looks better on Xbox than anything else. The D-day landing will have people talking about it for awhile.

Blah.

I bought it - finished it.

Had fun with it.

Just another first-person shooter.

So where are all these classics?

Why do you fanboys feel the need to justify your purchase all the time?

People who own ALL the consoles have no problems making objective judgments on them, yet people who own just the one console always seem intent on defending it at every possible opportunity.....

....and they also think their opinion is as informed as the person who owns them all.

:p

(just remember Jod - you'd given up on your DC until I pointed you in the right direction.)

Xbox Live is great, but it's not enough to make up for the lack of true AAA games.

That's not to say that there aren't lots of good games.

But I think you guys know as well as I do that most of them are just filling in time while we wait for the AAA titles.......and keep waiting........and waiting......

Ok, back to F-Zero and Viewtiful Joe for me.

Hardly a fanboy, I own an Xbox true but I don't buy games for it. There isn't any point I normally finish a game in 1 night so I hire them. With no one to play mutliplayer with and not having Live (yet) There is no reason at all for me to buy a game.
I could say your a bandwagoner and to make sure your on the right one you buy all the consoles, Taking cheap shots in a decent thread isn't needed.

Star Wars: KOTOR WILL be remembered as a classic because it's the first Star Wars game the general public, Yes including the gaming mags, Have accepted it as the first SW game that didn't blow chunks. I don't really agree with that but that's why it will be remembered.

Morrowind itself is a classic game and the Xbox version is better than the PC version, Unless you include the fact you can't build Mods for the Xbox version.

I explained why MOHF would be a classic. Keep in mind it's not YOUR opinion that makes a game classic. IMO there is many games that I could call classic but the majority wouldn't. MOHF was one of the best FPS games ever. As I said the beach landing alone is going to make people remember it, Because people almost always remember a game better than it actually was it will go down as a classic.

Does owning all the consoles really make you informed? Most games are ported between consoles so you really only need the one. If owning all the consoles somehow makes you smarter we should start a fund to buy consoles for 3/4 the population.

No offence gPhonque but sadly not all of us are rich enough to buy every console. And yes I had given up on the DC but only because it was so difficult to get hold of games.

This is all pointless though because once Halo 2 surfaces, we all know that the only console to own will be the XBox because if you dont have one, you wont be playing the greatest game ever!

"I could say your a bandwagoner and to make sure your on the right one you buy all the consoles,"

You could say that, but you'd be wrong.

I buy all the consoles because I make games for a living and can get tax deductions. (and I enjoy them obviously)

Besides, you just proved that you have no idea where I'm coming from - there IS NO "right" console. (and you say you're not a fanboy! lol)

If I didn't have a PS2, I wouldn't be able to play Pro Evo, Rez etc.

If I didn't own an Xbox, I wouldn't be able to play JSRF and Panzer, system-link Halo etc

If I didn't own a Gamecube, I wouldn't be able to play F-Zero, Viewtiful Joe etc...

I own them all because I enjoy them all.

No you didn't - you just said it was, and mentioned the first level as though it is proof.

Personally, I think it's a completely bland p|ss-boring game that doesn't do anything that hasn't been done just as well already by other games.

And that's true.

(I still enjoyed it when I played through it, but how many people are still talking about that game, even now? Answer: nobody.)

Does owning all the consoles really make you informed?

More informed than somebody who owns just the one?

Yes.

Most games are ported between consoles so you really only need the one.

No - I've explained (above) why I need to own them all.

And how old are you......?

Boy, you are so deluded.

Halo, the greatest game of all time, has spent a grand total of 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds in my Xbox since I finished it almost 8 months ago.

Why jod, do you continue to rave about Halo? Sure it's probably one of the better FPS games, but nothing more.

Now Daikatana, THAT was a game! ;)

God it's funny watching people who own an Xbox defend it like it's the be all and end all of all consoles. I own an Xbox, think it's great but it's not the only consoles out there, they all have their great points and bad.
Oh, and Halo's not the greatest game ever, haven't played it for a second since finishing it.

I think I have found my long lost twin.

I have to get to bed so I can be up for work so I'll keep it short.
To start what games do you make for a living? Must be pretty crap if you hardly have enough money for food.
Now the obvious cheap shot is out of the way, When I said does owning every console really make you informed I think you took it the wrong way.

You could be a new gamer and own every console does this mean your going to be able to make a better judgment on it than someone who's gamed for hours a day every day of their life?
I think not.

I can't be bothered replying to the rest of the stuff you wrote. It doesn't really deserve it but since I am such a big fan of Morrowind I will ask if you have played either the PC or Xbox versions? If you had played both you wouldn't need to ask why the Xbox version is better.

Now after reading through the topic again I've realised that we've strayed away from the point. The topic question asks which is the greatest console of all time. Of course games play a big part in how we judge what console is the best but really they shouldn't. We should judge on the console alone and I'm sure when all the cards are layed down Xbox could be proven with enough effort as the 'best' maybe not the greatest but the best.
Maybe you should start a greatest game thread gPhonque. Either way I'm done with this topic for now I see it decaying into another flame thread.

Cmon.......have you seen the preview vid for that game! The graphics are so good you cant tell if your playing the game or watching a cut scene! The game play from what I have heard is going to be awesome, superior AI to an already impressive AI set up from the first Halo.

Im going to stop before I go on and on about it but Halo 2 looks freaking awesome. As a true gamer, which I know you are gPhonque, you cant tell me you are not looking forward to Halo 2??

And for those not playing again since you finished it??? Ive gone back and completed it on every difficulty level and I still play multiplayer with my brother and friends. The game has so much replay value it's not funny!

But different horses for different courses.

Firstly, you obviously don't understand the concept of a "joke". (of course I have money to buy food - I was trying to point out that I'm no "Frodo" when it comes to money....)

And secondly, I work for the biggest and best games developer in Australia.

If you have half a clue, you'll know who that is.

Now the obvious cheap shot is out of the way,

You're so defensive for somebody who's not a fanboy.

When I said does owning every console really make you informed I think you took it the wrong way.

So you think you're more informed and more "in the know" than somebody who has been playing games for 20 years, making them for 8 years, has owned just about every console since the Atari 2600, and who has quite easily gamed on average a couple of hours a day throughout it all?

To use your words - I think not.

At the end of the day, Halo is just a first person shooter.

A 30fps one at that.

Now 30fps doesn't bother me as long as it's smooth, but will Halo 2 keep up the tradition of slowing down constantly whenever there's a bit of action?

Halo is not technically that impressive. Style-wise though, it has a definate "look" to it which is what sets it apart from other similar games.

But from a technical viewpoint, it doesn't excite me as much as say, Outrun 2. (which I pray will come to Xbox.....it's arcade only at the moment)

I'm another who hasn't played Halo since I finished, other than system link with 16 people. And whenever you do play system link, the framerate dives below 10fps regularly making it almost unplayable.

It's still a great game, but me thinks you're deluded as to how good it really is. :p
