Most surprising results are put down to poor match-ups, fatigue, a heavy favourite taking the opposition lightly or the occasion getting the better of one team (poor Grand Final performances).

Then there are some where the cause of the result was never really identified.

Geelong only dropping one game in the 2008 Home and Away season but somehow losing by 86 points is the first that comes to mind!

Carlton getting smashed twice by the two bottom teams in 1995 and never losing another game would be up there, although this one is suspected to have financed their end of season trip that year.

Can you think of one game that's always been a head-scratcher?

I was genuinely shocked when Melbourne coudn't muster any effort to beat Collingwood when finals were on the line last year. In every situation like that I can remember the team with finals on the line came out spitting fire.

Fremantle v Richmond 2015 Round 10

9-0 Dockers, only given up 3 60+ scores all year. Richmond weren't a bad team but were only 5-4 with 3 wins over bottom dwellers Essendon and unconvincing wins over midrange sides Port and Collingwood in the 3 weeks previous. The Ross Lyon grind was in full swing with the Dockers 2 wins clear on top and a percentage of 151%.

Richmond had 8 goals by 20 minutes into the first quarter. Reached the 60+ mark 9 minutes into the 2nd. Didn't run away to destroy them or anything but they blew them off the park early and coasted.

Similarly, with a minor premiership a possibility for the Eagles coming into the final fortnight of 2015, they needed to win their final 2 games and hope the Dockers dropped one. We will never know what Ross would have done had they needed to win to finish top, but he rested the stars with top spot sown up after the Eagles capitulated spectacularly to the Crows in round 22.
The Eagles came into round 22 sitting 2nd with a record of 15-1-4 and a percentage of 150%. The Crows were much like Richmond, a good team but not much more.

By quarter time Adelaide were up 51-1 and Ross Lyon was pencilling his stars in for a rest, knowing they had to only beat the lowly Demons to secure top spot (which they did). It was 57-1 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter, Jenkins with 4.

In hindsight these results make sense with teams rising/dipping etc but leading up to it no one could have seen these coming, and I prepare to stand corrected but I don't remember the `flu/gastro` excuses coming out either as often happens when a team has an unexpected loss.

After Collingwood the week before stood toe to toe with us and nearly knocked us off. Port would have had every chance of beating them.

In a way both being such mentally weak and mediocre sides (despite being well above their opponents) neither should have been EXTREMELY surprising. Not saying I tipped them at all of course but neither were brilliant sides on a bad day (Essendon I guess did start 2012 on fire but it was a matter of time - June, July whatever, winter was coming and it was gonna freeze em up).

The Eagles were the reigning premiers, at home (9-3 in Perth that year, including a 1-point loss to eventual premier Carlton), headed to another finals series, against a Crows side without their star forward (Tony Modra), star ruckman and reigning B&F (Shaun Rehn) and Captain (Tony McGuinness), who were going through the motions towards the end of a season where they eventually finished 11th (with a putrid percentage of 80.08) in a 16 team comp.

Was a precursor to the "forward press" that Collingwood perfected in 2010/2011.

The Cats got bullied on a wet night with 85 tackles from the Pies, which was an obscene number at the time (AFL teams each averaged 53.56 tackles per game in 2008, compared to 68.51 in 2017).

Yep certainly have. Joey Daniher’s kicking last year, and our record comeback in 2014 are two others. Then of course you belted us in 2013. Our games are always good value one way or another!

Half way through the 3rd term and we’re 26 points down.
