Whats the deal with us dumping more players that we have picks? Thats three today, Masten and McInnes plus the two basketballers. Are we more active off the scene than it might appear?
Masten out Kelly in
Allen out Pick 46 in
Mutimer out Pick 91 in

McInnes out Rookie in
Brooksby out Rookie in

Whats your thoughts on harley sparks?

Not spent much time looking at Harley Sparks play live so not in the best position to answer. He may be worth a rookie spot but not close to consideration at 46. Depends whether we pick up a sliding position player at 46 or whether we go for the best mid available at 46. I would go the latter but there again O'Brien and I rarely think on common grounds when it comes to drafting mids. His stats are a littel hot and cold so I don't have the full inside s to why. I like the fact he showed good signs in a couple of ressies games. Any others with better inside?

Now assuming we take the 2 in the main draft and 2 in the rookie draft, here is our age profile by position

Interesting that Cole is the only one left from his age group and in fact the 23 to 27 year olds are looking a little thinner than you would like.

I would like to see us go the best inside or balanced mid with pick 46, more indifferent with pick 91 and the 2 rookies but would like to see a defender like Jaxon Prior (probably gone by this stage) and a developing ruck option and possible another small forward (Tyrone Thorn type option).

A total of 28 selections with only 6 still on our list. To be fair, only 2 of those picks were inside the top 20 with another 3 in the 20’s so we didn’t have quality picks as we did trade away a couple of first rounders in that time

Thanks for the analysis.

For a side very much in contention in the next couple of years- to have 10 out of that 19-23 age group (right now) having played good chunks of consistent footy does bode well for us post 2020. We’ve got a core of strong, Mature footballers- it’s not been the easiest side to get into but we have still given lots of opportunities.

Barring any preseason setbacks, it should be the year we see Brander, Rotham, Allen, Petrucelle, Venables and even someone like Ryan & Barrass go to another level next year. So even assuming JK, Hurn retire at the end of the next year the baton will be ready to be handed over.

Trading in for Kelly not only gives us a genuine A grade midfielder to add to our midfield- but also gives us a training environment to nurture our younger midfielders who haven’t debuted yet.

So although a big chunk will be on the older side post 2020, I think we are as well prepared as we can be on paper. Having said that, if we can manage to draft a ready made Kennedy or NicNat replacement with 46 that would be handy.

Feel a bit for Matty Allen. I never really feel like he got a shot at it and had done at least as much as some others who got an opportunity.

Maybe something will come for him on a rookie list somewhere but our left overs never seem to get any attention. He's only just 22 maybe he can force his way back in through a state league as a mature ager.
This isn't an Eagles exclusive thing as it seems to happy all round the competition but it always surprises me when a young guy who is nearly best 22 gets delisted - even more so when they are a pretty consistent starter, which does happen from time to time.

Given how close he was to getting a run in 2019 I'd like to think the club would consider re-drafting him via the rookie draft if he's available and we have the picks. In saying that if you think about it in reality, he's probably not going to have a huge impact in the AFL even if he gets another chance. I know we like to romanticise about guys waiting for ages to get a crack and proving the selection committee wrong, but generally if someone hasn't got a match - let alone become best 22 - after 4 years on an AFL list, they aren't likely to be anymore than a bits and pieces player.

Best of luck to him - I'm sure the last couple of years have been frustrating getting so close to an AFL debut.

In the Beagles final against Claremont I felt Brayshaw was our best . He kept Beagles in the game for mine .Had to go off the ground for a long time when injured and played with a jab . He hasnt had a great run due to injuries so fair enough to give him another year .

He'd really wanna work on his runnung this off season otherwise he may be on limited time.

We seriously need pressure from underneath in 2020, lack of pressure on the 22 this year was dissapointing.

Pressure on the backline was good - we had Rotham, Watson, Cole, Duggan, Schofield, Nelson fighting all year for basically two spaces, plus Edwards looked promising in the first half of the year.

Forward line was similar with Cameron, Waterman and on the odd occasion he played WAFL Petruccelle consistently putting their hands up for selection.

Midfield is where we had no pressure - Ah Chee and Allen never really demanded a game and no one else was even close.

So the conclusion is we can't draft for s**t until Rawlings arrived (who has since gone) so the club fixed that by trading away all our picks for Tim Kelly?

Next level thinking right there.

Hence why MAllen got the boot. The fact is we were crying out for mids and he never put his hand up consistantly.

Yep, we really need Cole, Duggan, Nelson, Petch to push up into the middle (at least part time in seniors and more time when playing 2's).

The next mid might be more likely from the draft, but no reason we can't at least try some of our current crop there through the reserves.

Also interesting seeing the list ATG posted earlier with Gaff as our only outside mid (Smith maybe, but he lacks a bit of the class required), that is a spot in the team the above players can target. Sure a balanced player (sheed, redden, maybe hutch) will probably slot in there round 1, the opportunity is there to become a specialist.

The dark drafts. There were multiple posters on here that suggested better picks through that period. Hope WCE is paying attention to those same analysts this draft

All aboard the Philp train here.

The more I see of him, the more I am impressed.

The most under-rated player in this years' pool in my opinion.

Ready to play stoppage machine; a clearance beast that wins possession and accelerates away from the contest at pace.

With the weapons he has I can't see how he would ever last to pick 46 though.

The club definitely needs to find a way of trading up in the draft.

The trick for the players outside the 22 is to not win the B&F in the reserves side and you have a chance at making it.

Partington, Allen and Brooksby found out the hard way.

Yeah, they couldn't have done much more - I particularly liked Keegan - but they all had flaws that wouldn't transpose to the big game.

Those numbers aren't terrible not for a club that has been very competitive and had poor draft picks. You have players aged from 18-32 on an AFL list and you need a list that comprises of a core group of long term players and then players who are either toping up the list or developing. 10 long term players over five years get you the numbers you need to build a competitive list and players like Hill, Wellingham, Ellis all served the club well and ought to be included as solid value recruits via trading.

Also shouldn't really be including rookie selections and then making trades a second list, trading is a much more important aspect of successful recruiting than the rookie draft. Remember the club needed to turn over 15 players on the senior list at a minimum over that period and i count 17 players via the national draft and then the players traded-in.

We drafted four premiership players over this period.

Looks ok, there is no doubt we'll go slide down the ladder in 2022-2023. How far is hard to know.

You're unlikely to delist players between the ages of 25-29 unless they're injured or had off issues (excluding rookie picks), so the younger players in our premiership top four or top six.

These were the years of the compromised drafts
Our good picks were few, so to come out of this era with a premiership just 3 years later is a tribute to our list management team
In addition we also have a bucket full of young talls to see us through the next decade

There's people defending this trading era but sorry, its exceedingly poor. Many good players missed and in particular our record drafting midfielders is shocking.
