The greatest Australian batsman I have ever seen and I've enjoyed watching his documentary on Fox with some great footage from his fantastic career.

They called him Captain Grumpy back in 1993.

Craig McDermott got the next plane home and Merv Hughes stood up to lead the bowling attack.

I wonder has he ever addressed the raining rupees thing? Some tour diary from the 80s he recounts throwing rupees from his balcony then dumping a bucket of water on the presumably impoverished Indians who came to pick them up while on tour in India. Always struck me as quite mean spirited and has clouded my opinion of him ever since I read about it.

An amazing cricket player who stood tall against ferocious attacks and often without helmets.

he is definitely in Oz's all time best eleven

He usually wore a helmet against the fast bowlers but he didn't wear a face guard like most batsmen do now, Kim Hughes was the same.

I've never heard that story and it wasn't mentioned in the documentary, the players did a lot of stuff back then that wouldn't be acceptable now though.

it is disgraceful how too many australians look down on others

it is an ugly part of our culture which will hopefully be mitigated as we travel more

One story I didn't know that I learnt from that AB doco was that Beefy gave AB the bat that he almost won the game with in the 82 Boxing Day test.

AB was out of form and was in danger of getting dropped and he was talking to Botham who he was mates with and he said here have one of my bats.

One of the old Duncan Fearnley bats and the rest is history, well almost, the English guys were giving Beefy stick for giving AB one of his magic bats.

Both Gower and Botham were great mates with Border, he was the only Aussie player back then that was on the same level playing field as them.

You judge a man by the company they keep and Border kept the best company.

That would have been his first overseas tour. 3/4 of the team had never toured before or been to India. They are getting thrashed on the field, can't drink there, no phones, no internet and very little support staff around them to guide them, not like today. You are right, it is mean spirited but a long time ago mate. Can't really judge him for doing that.

This doco has the most 'underrated' unplayable ball .
Marshall to Border in Adelaide , at high pace ball pitches leg stump nips across to take the top of off .

Border looks like a tail ender but does nothing wrong. Brilliant piece of bowling to castle a gun bat.

Yer they lifted when they bowled to Border. I'd like to know how quick that ball was, it was rocketing. Border averaging over 50 when he played a lot against the Wet Indies shows how good he was.

He was damn good, but his overall average v WI was 39.46.

Also one of the few to average more away than at home (45.94 v 56.57) overall

At a random stab I would say late 130s early 140s. Border got beaten for pace as well as movement.

I always remember Deano saying Marshall had a yard on Garner and co when he cranked it up.

Only averaged 39 against the Windies? That might well be the case but it somewhat belies his guts facing, year on year the best bowling attack that has ever been seen in the 80's and 90's??. Did you ever see him bat against that attack?

There are several Windies players that say his 98* and 100* at Port Of Spain on the 1984 tour where he batted for more than 10 hours are the best innings they've seen. In fact, Jeff Dujon, upon shaking his hand said 'I wish I could play like that'.

Joel Garner is on record as saying that Border is the gutsiest batsman he has ever played against.

I was answering a poster who said AB averaged 50 against windies.

Fully agree 39 is a very good effort v windies at their peak.

I began watching 1990, so saw AB v Windies in a couple of series, though not as their scary peak.

anyone who remembers Kym Hughes crying or david hookes' broken jaw recalls how scary the windies were

amazing and relentless pace by holding, roberts, garner, walsh, marshall, ambrose etc

You misunderstood me, Blue. I said he played a lot against the West Indies and that he averaged over 50, what I meant was that was his overall average for all test matches. Played 31 matches against them. Botham only played 20 against them and Gower 19 in comparison.

Patterson and Daniel weren't slow either. They would have played a lot more tests in another era.

That's not why Kim Hughes cried.

Don't forget that it took at least 2 years for Malcolm Marshall to cement a place in those great Windies teams.

Was basically a fill in when one of the cartel was injured in his early career.

I'm a huge fan of Allan Border, but I thought the doco was pretty weak. Basically a highlights package interspersed with interviews with Allan Border and a few ex-players. I still watched the whole thing... but I reckon you could get something similar just by spending a few hours on Youtube.
