Was watching a 1986 match, Essendon v Collingwood @ VFL Park, the Pies FINALLY broke through and defeated Sheedy's boys. Lethal Lee's first year at the helm as Head/Senior Coach. He had them playing some of the best football this American had ever watched from the ESPN weekly program.

One youngster whom I forgot to nominate was fullback Dannie Seow who, admittedly, had a bit of a roller coaster rookie campaign in '86. But I recall several matches where he showed great promise. In the Essendon rematch, he was all over Simon Madden like a wet blanket. But I also remember the second encounter with Footscray at the MCG where Simple Simon Beasley toyed with him until Matthews replaced him with Greg Phillips. That match was won by the Pies going away in the final term when Ronnie McKeown marked along the boundary and kicked a ripper goal from about 45 meters start the comeback. BT took care of the rest. Oddly enough, even though I recorded that ESPN telecast back in 1986, I've never seen anyone upload it on YouTube before. Years ago, I used to convert my VHS tapes of my NFL New York Football Giants recordings to DVDs but never my old Collingwood recordings ... maybe when I retire in about 10 years. But I digress.

Seow showed some potential but, apparently, fell down the depth chart after logging 14 matches in 1986, to only four (4) in 1987, to not playing at all in 1988. Instead, he spent a year here in the US attending the University of North Carolina and attempted to play gridiron as a Wide Receiver! After making himself eligible for the 1989 Pre-season Draft, Melbourne picked him up and played spottingly. He logged only five (5) matches for them in 1989 and only two (2) in 1990 before calling it a career. He now lives here in the US and resides here in our Mountain region in Colorado and has been coaching USAFL teams for many years now.

Seow may have had a fledgling career in the VFL, in logging only two (2) seasons with our heroes, but any young player from the 1980s brave enough to go out on the grounds with his famous "Monchhichi" hair style deserves nomination as an "Almost Collingwood Cult Hero!"

Peace!

Yeah, Danny was a handy player, but he played at fullback in those rebuilding teams and it was a difficult job.
Wasn't quite big or quick enough to handle opposition star forwards.
Also played on Capper in the infamous umpiring match against the swans at Victoria Park.

Wonderful post. You sound like you would be a great storyteller in person as well.

Great post. Seow one is of the best ethnic Chinese players (his Singapore born and raised father was of the majority ethnic Chinese) to play our game.

I hope I live long enough to see the VHS conversions, would be amazing. Maybe you could take early retirement and get it done sooner 🤣
