It was a great story at the time.Wikipedia page sets it all out.
I've always thought he played an Escort Cup senior match, but apparently he did play in that game against Melbourne.
Long sleeves in the number 13.

Great memory! He did play a "night series" game in 1983 (though it was the Sterling Cup at the time, not Escort Cup!!): https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/players/brett-cooperWikipedia page sets it all out.

The recent, major upgrade to Collingwood Forever saw the addition of night/pre-season, Reserves and U19s details to the players' pages, a nice improvement to the site.

He was playing with Preston earlier in the season (1983), so the "night" game he played will be the losing quarter-final against Hawthorn: https://www.hardballget.net/afl-npm-1983-afc-sterling-cup.html

I remember him. He was about 5ft tall and weighed 50kg.
A really loved favourite on the whipping boy thread but he did deserve most of itTim Broomhead
his leg snapped like a broom worst injury until Howe's injuries in 2020 and 2023 imoA really loved favourite on the whipping boy thread but he did deserve most of it
Greg Phillips. Never really lived up to the hype as the best CHB in Australia
Garry Shaw might be the rover you're thinking ofClassic example of the difference between sanfl and vfl. Was a good solid defender but was certainly no Billy Picken.
Like Tony Burgess or that rover we bought over in the mid 80s whose name I can't remember.

No, Gary was a Queenslander via WA, guy I'm thinking of was a South Australian possibly with a funny surname about 85-86

To be fair Phillips did make a decent full back for us. Tough as nails, but far to slow to be a quality VFL CHB...
Were you thinking of Bill Valli?
Good player though.Greg Phillips. Never really lived up to the hype as the best CHB in Australia
He was a good player. Gordon Towen was one that was going to fix our Full Back woes. Fantastic VFA defender who didn't like the pressures of VFLGood player though.
