This was the hardest letter of all. A few good players had to be left out. Plenty of big men and defenders but few real forwards to support Murray. Apologies to Bryan Martyn and Dean McRae. McAdam can consider himself a little fortunate.

It took three letters to put this team together and still had to go back in the archives a bit. Unfortunately there will be no Q representative either in this or the next team.

For those who never saw Clarrie Nolan (all of us) he was one of the best place kicks in his time---not much call for it today.

Had to scrape the barrel a bit for this one. Nevertheless it contains some stars including our first Brownlow medalist. Like most of the letters, this team has a strong centre line.

Some trivia on a couple of the players: Charlie Tyson was a star for Collingwood before being blamed by that club for their 1926 Grand Final loss to Melbourne. Speaking of Melbourne, Dick Taylor was a superstar with them before accepting the challenge of lifting North from the bottom of the ladder. He went back to Melbourne after three seasons. Ray Taylor was the hero in Round 13 1969,kicking the winning goal in a shootout with Melbourne, enabling North to beat the Demons twice in a season for the first time since 1950.

It's a shame there are no VFA players in your teams. Rumour has it we had a few good teams back then and some well know players such as Paddy Noonan, Arthur Legge, Syd Barker Snr, Charlie Hardy, George Rawle, Bert Franks, Ted Gardiner, Dick Condon, Ralph Cornell, Harold Hart as well the Carlton defectors (who arrived in 1910 after the sacking of coach John Worrall) Frank Caine, Charlie Hammond, Fred Jinks and George Johnson.

Yes North were quite a formidable side in the VFA. It's a pity we don't have more complete information on the players of that time besides the stoic newspaper reports. I know all the players you mention except Legge. Not many of those players remained at the club long-term. The "big four" that crossed over from Carlton were all gone after two seasons. Barker, Hardy and Rawle were the main stalwarts. They would make the B,H and R teams if the VFA time period were included. But it's difficult with incomplete or no records.

And last,and least, the W-Z Team. No representatives from X or Y. (22 out 26 isn't bad).

So that's it people. It appears that the first half of the alphabet is better than the second half. Most of the teams have a strong centre line, which has been a feature of the club's history.Hopefully plenty of new candidates will force their way into all these teams in the coming years.

It's a part of the clubs history that I have been interested in and have a done some research on, but it is so hard to find complete records on.

Arthur Legge was a small forward pocket who played two seasons at North (1900 & 1901) before moving to Williamstown for another two years. He went to Essendon, where he was their leading goal scorer in 1907 and kicked three goals in their losing Grand Final in 1908. He played around 70 games for Essendon.
