Alternate Strip

Yep, I liked it. It's still black with a (massive) red sash. And the red shorts looked great. (much better than they look with our normal guernsey imo)

I would much rather that strip than any other colours, or, as somebody else said, stupid fancy logos that simply clutter up the guernsey and make it HARDER to distinguish at the end of the day. (and which is part of the reason that there are so many more strip clashes these days than there was 10 years ago.... christ, it takes me a minute or two sometimes these days just to work out who's playing since it seems that every teams guernsey has changed these days.... if every team actually wore their traditional guernsey, there would only be a small number of clashes, but anyway...)

all those who are not fans of the red shorts are on the right side of 30 - for us on the wrong side of 30 the red shorts are simpy brilliant and are there to remind us of the good old days..... tony buhagiar, paul van der haar, simon madden with a beard, tim watson on debut etc etc....

thumbs up to the red shorts

we wore red shorts back in the 70's, at a lean period in our history. the red shorts remind us of a losing team.

but the greater issue here is the AFL still can't grasp the purpose of match-day strips. they are meant to clearly distinguish the two teams on the park. Otherwise, the AFL should get all teams to wear white as they do in cricket.

The alternate strip today did not clearly differentiate the two teams on the field any better than our normal strip, which should be its intended purpose. particularly on tv where the bulk of the game's audience would have watched the match, it presented poorly. It looked like an intra-club match.

The AFL have no idea.

So is that the breaking of the longest period wearing the same top?
Nope. As posted on Bomberblitz, Guiness still consider it as the same jumper, but the record belongs to a baseball team that wore the same thing for 151 years.

All footy teams have changed their outfits in some form. One of the biggest non issues ever in football history.

I think the jumper is a bit of a cop-out.

Given that an alternate jumper was requested (and needed) we should have come up with a genuine alternative rather than the "bit each way" jumper we saw yesterday.

It's almost as if the club said to itself, "We don't want to change, so we will come up with a jumper that looks a bit different, but is essentially the same"

Well, you either go all the way, or not at all. You don't meet half way, which is what the current jumper does. It's a cop out.

All this stuff about 130 years of unbroken history is hysterical, melodramtic, over-emotional nonsense. Who cares abiut an unchanged jumper? Does that win you games? No! And since when is "not changing" something to be proud of? Anyone can "not change." It's the easiest thing in the world. You can just stay in the same dead-end job for 40 year and bingo - you've "not changed."

A more suitable and relevant jumper, to solve the clash against Melbourne and St.Kilda, would be to get rid of the black and replace it with either white, grey, or silver. That jumper we saw yesterday will not solve the clash with Melbourne, and was only "just" acceptable for the clash yesterday with the Saints. Even all red with black trimming around the collar and arm-holes would be better.

All this fuss about "unchanged history" is a fuss over nothing. It's melodramatic nonsense.

i try to steer clear of discussion bout what the alternate strip should exactly be as this open to personal preference and opinion. but grey/silver is awful.

the beef isn't with the club. Essendon have complied with the AFL's extremely soft guidelines on identical and/or similar match-day playing kits. a minor alteration to the match-day strip was required according to the AFL, and it hardly aided the purpose of alternate strips on the weekend (well, the purpose in every other major professional sport on the planet), which is to clearly differentiate the two teams on the field. so the question begs to be asked of the admin....why are we required to persist with something the club clearly doesn't want to continue?

they should have used the heritage kit from last year... small sash, and red shorts... the red shorts they used this year looked aweful, they were a different shade.... last years ones looked great.

is it just me or do the aboriginal boys look great in the red shorts?

it is disgusting..

personally i dont think any one should have to have an alternate strip
we have only complained for the last 5 years.....

they put up with it and didnt have any worries for the first 100 years so why now.... i think everyone should just have there normal jumper no matter where or who it is played against

I agree - white would look great I reckon. River Plate are white with a red sash, and it looks great.

I too believe this is a biggest overdramatic non-issue in the sport.

I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how a jumper can be apparently "sacred" and holds "tradition", yet we were and are more than happy to allow the "evil marketing people" sell off every square inch they realistically can to any corporate company willing to pay the right price.

Absolutely amazes me people get so worked up over this non issue.

spot on Smokin !!!

non issue - I dont know why but I like the red shorts though.......

Give it up!

You're worse than me and the Final 5.

Which is pretty bad.

The only difference is that silver is a terrible idea, whilst the Final 5 on the other hand is a wonderfully splendid and magnificent idea which should be re-adopted by the AFL as soon as possible. :p

As for our "clash" guernsey (what a load of whank.... "clash".... the only reason it's becoming an issue is because the other club's guernseys are becoming less easliy distinguishable thanks to the stupid far-too-detailed logos and whank and gradual darkening of their "traditional" guernseys), I see absolutely no reason why ALL clubs can't stick to using their traditional colours at the very least.

Silver, or white, or grey, or purple or pink or any other colours that have nothing to do with Essendon's traditional colours are NOT required to create a clash guernsey.

It can be done with red and black.

Surely we want Essendon to still be instantly recognizable as "Essendon" when on the ground?

Other clubs have already lost that. (I have no idea who's playing half the time these days... )

We HAVEN'T lost it.

Let's try to keep it.

Keep it red & black please.

I hate it. The AFL can **** off with their clash jumpers. Also Brian Taylor, Gary Lyon and all the other ****wits who criticised us and our clash jumper can piss off too. You worry about your pathetic excuses for clubs, and we'll worry about our superpower.

Far out, it annoys me when before we had the clash jumper, people were saying "good on you for fighting it out". Now that we have gone with the jumper we have, just to stick it up the AFL's arse, people are saying "it's piss weak". Far out, we just cant please anyone can we.

Sorry, but I don't think we need to have an alternate strip, but if we are going to have that disgraceful jumper, should wear black shorts. But red shorts with the normal jumper looked fine!
At least we only wear it for one more game!
