don't make me laugh.
The changes of getting "hit" in the AFL is so slight these days. Channel 10 struggled to feature 5-7 tackles in its - most of which involved Alwyn and the slick Brazilian Harry O'Brien.

im not talking about getting smacked behind play or someone coming thorugh with an elbow. I'm talking being knocked off the ball or copping a bone crunching tackle (which isnt too hard when your that small). Also I dont know why people are saying that tackling someone is taxing... i have never felt sore after tackling someone, dont know about anyone else

From an Essendon point of view,we have struggled to find players in the last 5 or 6 years who can consistantly play as a roaming goal kicking forward who arn't over 6'4.

Bewick was the last one we could count on week after week. You could put Mercuri in that catagory, but he was highly skilled enough to play any where,a champion.

Morecroft was patchy,Che ran out of gas in the end,Cupido failed,Alvey failed and Rioli was unfit,over-weight and injured all the time.Davey is the shining light atm and he's what we have been looking for to help out Lloydy and Scotty when the ball is at ground level.

In 99',2000 and 2001,we had Blumfield,Caracella,Rama,Heff and Mercs. They didn't need to be hanging around the FL all day because they all had the ability to run from the wings and slot running goals from 40+.

We should expect Watson,Dyson,Winderlich,Stanton and Lovett to do this job now(kick goals) but its just not happening enough.

Monfries is the only player we can count on atm to slot through 1 or 2 every week.

Davey is 22,has played senior SA footy for two years (which everyone knows is far superior to WAFL footy) and has a young family to look after. Which means his head is probably in the right place to excell at AFL level. I can't see him "dropping off" in 3 years time like some are suggesting.

For all the aboriginal players that have "lost their way" at 24-25,there are 100 times that number of "white" players who couldn't hack league footy and gave up.

Don't put Davey in the "He be good for two seasons and then let him self go" group. He'll be better than that...imo of course.:)

Nobby i dont think people are saying that it will happen, people are saying that they hope it doesnt happen.

I dont think it will happen with alwyn, i sure as hell hope it doesnt. BUT if he does happen to loose his pace over the years he may struggle... fingers crossed he's around for 10years being part of the next essendon dynasty

DK Lillee's post got me going..

He's tiny really. At training the other week,I took this photo of the whole group walking towards the gate. Davey looked like a 15 year old boy in the picture lined up against the rest.

Maybe he'll read up on everything about EFC's greatest "small" men and be inspired to make himself super-human fit..Maurice Rioli like endurance.

Names like Hutchison,Williams,Heard and Denham come to mind.

All started out like string beans ready to be pulverized at any given moment but built their arms up and maintained peek fitness year after year.

Hutchy would be the best example for young Alwyn to learn from.

Lots to look forward too with him...as long as a 95kg giant doesn't cause near death, if and when he gets hit.

He's doing exceptionally well, the real test for him is will he be able to back it up next season. Seemed not that long ago that Adrian McAdam burst onto the scene....the opposition worked him out, and thus ended his career as quick as it began. Cant fault his endeavour, but personally prefer to hold back a little before labelling him a future star. Daniel Wells springs to mind in recent times as another aboriginal not to live up to expectations.

IF ALWYN CAN BE AS GOOD AS WELLS ID BE STOKED. DIFFERENT SORTS OF PLAYERS OBVIOULSY BUT I THINK YOUR SELLING WELLS SHORT, HE IS A VERY VERY GOOD FOOTBALLER. HE JUST NEEDS TO RISE TO SUPERSTAR./CHAMPION STATUS

The beauty is that with a good marker you can play a tall player to punch it away, with an on baller you can play a run with player, with Davey and his tackling he is the hunter so no way to stop that side of his game which is just as important as his possessions.

No doubting Wells' ability, he just hasnt taken the next step yet.

Doesn't almost every player?

BTW,WHY ARE WRITING IN BOLD?:p

I voted for the second one i think, where he grabbed it on the wing, broke a tackle and kicked from 30m. The 1st one was good, had he got around anyone other than Presti, I would have voted for it, but Presti is a klutz so i figured you would almost expect Davey to get around him.

Yeah, the second one was better, broke a tackle then split 2 others before slotting it home, will be doing the first one all the time before too long.
Reminded me of Aaron when he first broke onto the scene, they are both electrifying.

I hear a third brother isn't too far away, shame the AFL never introduced that brother-brother rule we wanted.

I didn't know that, if Aaron ever has any contract disputes or anything, just let us know :thumbsu:

I still love that soccer volley he kicked from 35 metres out

They are a special bunch the Davey's.

With Aaron playing on the half back line a bit this year, I'd love to see them go head to head.

Now that would be a spectacle. If Aaron did line up there, I'm sure Sheeds would make it happen at some stage.
