Are they really amazing coincidences though? Pretty common.
You think it is pretty common for a team containing that season’s Brownlow Medallist to lose the Grand Final to a team they beat in the Grand Final the previous season when that team contained that season’s Brownlow Medallist?

When did that happen before or since?

Forgive me for one from Scottish soccer: Mr Douglas Park is the chairman of Rangers Football Club. Fellow Premier League team Hamilton plays at New Douglas Park, which was named after their previous stadium Douglas Park. Neither stadium has any connection to Mr Douglas Park.

A number of St Kilda and Adelaide coaches have had their tenures at these clubs end after matches between the Saints and Crows as follows:

Robert Shaw - Shaw ended a disappointing two year stint as Adelaide Crows coach in 1995 and 1996 with a heavy loss to St Kilda at Waverley Park in Round 22 1996.

Neil Craig - A disastrous 103-point defeat to St Kilda late in the 2011 season in which the Crows kicked just 3.6-24 saw Adelaide dismiss Neil Craig from the senior coaches role.

Brenton Sanderson - The Crows finished a mid ladder season in 2014 with a 14 goal demolition of hapless wooden spooner St Kilda, but despite having taken the Crows within a kick of the 2012 Grand Final it wasn't enough for Brenton Sanderson to keep his job as Adelaide Crows senior coach.

Malcolm Blight - The first and surprisingly to this day only Adelaide Crows' premiership coach in 1997 & 1998, Blight retired from coaching after the 1999 season, but returned as St Kilda coach in 2001. It didn't go very well, and after just 15 rounds Blight was sacked by the Saints after an abysmal 97 point thrashing by Adelaide.

And Adelaide's first premiership was won against St Kilda.
St Kilda and Adelaide's first encounter was in Round 7 1991 at Moorabbin, and saw Tony Lockett playing his first match of the year having been injured in the pre-season. Lockett kicked 12.6 and St Kilda won by 131-points, 24.18-162 to 4.7-31, a record winning margin for the Saints at the time.
