Amazing coincidences in football

Probably not so much of an amazing coincidence, but probably poor management.

But a match between Essendon & Geelong in 1903, was delayed by 25 minutes whilst a messenger rushed to the city, to purchase a new football to start the match.

Doug Wade.

As a Cat played in two GFs: a win against Hawthorn in 1963 and a loss against Richmond in 67.

As a Roo he has the same experience against the same teams: a win against the Hawks in 75 and a loss against the Tigers in 74.

Has another player beaten the same team in a GF while playing on different teams?

Has another player lost a GF to the same club on different teams?

Doug Wade doing both seems pretty freaky IMO.

Round 8 1995

Richmond and Carlton are both 7-0 going into this round.

Both lose by 72 - Carlton to Sydney and Richmond to Geelong.

-----------

Not exactly epic ...

Jimmy Bartel in two of his most individually important games, when he won his NSM in 2011 and in his 250th appearance in R1 2014, the scores were the same: Cats 119 v Opposition 81.

Also slightly related - 119 was the margin in his first GF.

-------

2007 GF

Geelong scores 24.19

Two major stories of missed participation in that game were regarding Mark Blake and Matthew Egan.

Blake wore #24

Egan wore #19

Fitzroys last win was against Fremantle
Fitzroys last loss was at the hands of Fremantle
Fitzroys last game was against Fremantle
Fremantles first ever AFL win was against Fitzroy
Fremantles last two games of 1996 were against Brisbane and Fitzroy respectively - keeping them each to 10.11.71 (We also scored 10.11.71 ourselves in R20)

Not a bad effort for two clubs that only played each other a grand total of four times.

Collingwood wore a predominantly white jumper (with black stripes) since, like, forever.
port came in, and although they were not allowed to wear their black and white stripes jumper, it had a jail bar design that was mostly black.
Collingwood changed to a predominantly black jumper with white stripes, and said its their tradition.

Yeah haha - our second game against Fitzroy was a pretty nothing game. The other 3, however, all had huge significance for both clubs (though mainly for poor Fitzroy :( :()

St.kilda won the first wooden spoon.
St.kilda won the last wooden spoon.
Also 26 in between then, with only 1 flag, that was won by 1 point.

Not sure if it's a coincidence, just shows how s**t we are
But you're the best at it, so you've got that going for you ;)

Awesome thread just quietly (y)

My old man pointed out this one to me earlier on Sunday when we new we were playing Port in the final...

In the year 2012, Shaun Grigg had 12 handballs against Port Adelaide in round 6. 2 + 12 = 14
In the following year of 2013, Shaun Grigg had 13 handballs against Port Adelaide in round 7. 1 + 13 = 14
In the following year of 2014, Shaun Grigg had 14 handballs again Port Adelaide in round 16. 16 - 2 = 14.
2014 - Shaun Grigg's total handballs the last two weeks 26 = 1988 (the year Shaun was born)
+ the total of handballs in the first calculations = 42
42 (handballs) - 26 (Grigg's age) = 16 (the amount of points Richmond will beat Port Adelaide by this weekend)

I don't get it. Where does the "2 +" in 2012, the "1 +" in 2013 and the "- 2" in 2014 come from?

Also it's time to put your old man into some sort of care.

1900 Melbourne win premiership..... 100 years later (2000) Melbourne lose Grand Final
1901 Essendon win premiership....... 100 years later (2001) Essendon lose Grand Final
1902 Collingwood win premiership....... 100 years later (2002) Collingwood lose Grand Final
1903 Collingwood win premiership....... 100 years later (2003) Collingwood lose Grand Final
1904 Fitzroy win premiership....... 100 years later (2004) Brisbane Lions lose Grand Final

So get on Carlton to make the GF and lose.

port won the SA(N)FL flag that year and defeated carlton in the champions of australia game.

so maybe get on port to lose the grand final?

Don't know how amazing it is but west coast won the flag in 92, their first and in a Friday night home and away game vs north kicked 14.26. When they won their 3rd flag in 2006 they played North and kicked a similar score, 14.23. Premiership season, Same goals, a lot of points and almost identical score line. Kinda freaky.
