Amazing coincidences in football

Halfway through the 2nd qtr of Suns v Bulldogs, Suns have not received a single free kick, to WB 8.

Sorry, wrong thread, that ain’t no coincidence.
Honestly, is the Bulldogs / Umpires love affair a coincidence, or not?

Fremantle defeated Melbourne by 7 points
GWS Giants defeated Geelong by 7 points
Gold Coast defeated Western Bulldogs by 7 points
And all three losing teams had three more scoring shots, and finished with similar scores.

7 of the same results have happened 22 years apart if Lions beat WCE in Round 16 then that makes 8.
In 2001 Brisbane Lions AFL Season before the first flag
Round 1 lost to Port
Round 3 lost to Western Bulldogs
Round 9 Lost to Adelaide

Round 2 Defeated North Melbourne by 60 Points
Round 5 Defeated Fremantle by 49 Points
Round 10 Defeated Essendon by 28 points
Round 12 Defeated Melbourne by 49 points

Round 11 Defeated WCE by 22 points.

In the 2023 AFL Season
Round 1 Lost to Port Adelaide
Round 3 Lost to Western Bulldogs
Round 11 Lost to Adelaide

Round 2 Defeated Melbourne by 11 points
Round 5 Defeated North Melbourne by 75 points
Round 7 Defeated Fremantle by 48 points
Round 9 Defeated Essendon by 42 points

Lions to play WCE in Round 16 going on form that also could be the same result too.

Also in 2003 AFL Season
The Final ladder
1. Port Adelaide
2. Collingwood
3. Brisbane Lions

Current AFL Ladder after 11 Rounds
1. Collingwood
2. Port Adelaide
3. Brisbane Lions

The same top 3 teams.

Mark Anthony Dwyer played for Fitzroy (1986-1987) and St Kilda (1988) in the VFL, while Mark “Mick” Andrew Dwyer played for St Kilda (1986-1995) and Fitzroy (1996) in the VFL/AFL - two players with the same Christian name and surname playing for the same two clubs at roughly the same time.

The Dwyer's were team-mates in one game, for St Kilda against the Sydney Swans at Moorabbin in Round 17 1988, but never played in the same game for opposing teams. Mark Dwyer was a member of the Fitzroy team that thrashed St Kilda by 85-points 24.16-160 to 11.9-75 in Round 19 1986, while Mick Dwyer was part of the Fitzroy team trounced by St Kilda by 85-points in Round 4 1996, the scoreline a reversal of that 10 years earlier with the Saints winning over the Lions 24.16-160 to 11.9-75.

Two other players with similar names that played in the same era - Ricky Nixon and Richard Nixon - did not ever play in the same match. Richard Nixon however did play in a Richmond team in a match against a Hawthorn team containing John Kennedy.

Prior to his death in 2007, former Geelong player Joe Sellwood was the oldest AFL/VFL premiership player at the age of 96. He passed away a couple of weeks after Geelong finally broke their 44 year premiership drought, a team featuring an anagram of his own name - Joel Selwood.

As far as I can tell, these two hold most records for players with unique anagramed names - games played, premierships, etc.

How did u even come across this. Crazy.

Essendon 2012 for-against: 2091-2090
F-A at home: 1049-1049
F-A away: 1042-1041

If only Essendon had scored one more behind in one of those away games...

In both R12 and R13 2023 the Bulldogs lost by 22 points and in the next game of those two rounds the contest was decided by 25 points.

R12

Cats d Bulldogs by 22

Suns beat Crows by 25

R13

Port d Bulldogs by 22

Hawks beat Lions by 25

From the years 1975 to 1991 (17 seasons), each Grand Final (except for 1982) had either Hawthorn or Collingwood participating, and yet they never met each other in a Grand Final in that period.
Similar to what happened with Geelong and Melbourne from 1951-1964.

IIRC all but two GFs in this period had either Melbourne (8x) or Geelong (4x) but never both teams.

They’ve also missed each other by one year in 1988/89 and 2020/21/22.

Yeah sort of a stretch.

But if you’d said that Port played the Cats in Round 14,
and Ports previous game was beating the Bulldogs by 22 in Rd 13,
and Cats previous game was beating the Bulldogs by 22 in Rd 12 (Rd 13 bye),
then that would be a first ever I bet.

Titanic and Essendon

1912 year Titanic sank, Essendon won flag
1985 year Titanic's wreck was found, Essendon won the flag
2000 year Carpathia's wreck (the rescue ship) was found, Essendon won the flag
So there's a correlation between Essendon and sinking ships? Cool.

The Swans have now twice won by 171-points. One was a 29.15-189 to 2.6-18 demolition by South Melbourne over St Kilda at the Lake Oval in 1919, and the second time was this afternoon when the Sydney Swans thrashed an inept West Coast Eagles team 31.19-205 to 5.4-34 at the SCG.
